This is a clip from the 2nd season of the Comedy Central show "Viva Variety." The sketch combines the Oscar Wilde play "The Importance of Being Ernest" with Ernest P. Worrell himself, the late Jim Varney. Varney is not quite playing Ernest here, but...well, you'll have to watch.
(Also, to all you Ernest podcasts out there...I see you, Vern. :) I'm glad, nay, thrilled you're all tickled by this. Thanks to Uncle Rog for buying me a VCR when I was 10, and my Ma for buying me video tapes whenever I asked - they made this post possible.)

The Ernest character was a real life cartoon. Jim's character was absolutely iconic, a masterclass in comedic acting, up there with some of the best work of Laurel and Hardy, Three Stooges and the Marx Brothers. He was criminally underrated in his time and should've been a much bigger actor. He was a better actor than Jim Carrey, who while wildly talented, was too out of control of his characters sometimes. Jim brought subtlety and grace to Ernest behind the buffoonery that has made his characters stand up over time. It's such a tragedy that he didn't live longer and have a fuller career. Truly one of the all-time greats.

The concept of Ernest gets better when you realize the character was originally developed for a small local commercial in Tennessee. As more people saw the ad, tapes began to circulate to the point where more business’s in other counties, then other states and eventually national advertisers wanted the character. Then of course a long line of movies, tv show, and stardom came his way. Ernest was a viral hit before the internet was available to the public. That’s how good he really was. Ernest was a literal grass roots movement from a guy who never let it go to his head. Toy Story would have finally broke him out past the Ernest character but we know that story… Yeah, he was that good.

The life of Jim Varney is also a very pointed commentary on the risk of smoking. He was a very bright talent, loved by so very many people, and he lost the battle with lung cancer at age 50 after many years of heavy cigarette use. I for one miss Jim Varney' s excellent talent and sense of humor very much. Think of how much more he could have contributed, if he had had many more years with us. He really was a wonderful person, they say.

man its incredible his portrayal of an englishman with thick accent and all this proper form and suit and top hot, so refreshing to see how well he can pull something like that off when most of his films are very tonally different like his line at 0:52, he just nails the depiction of englishman character with all the little voice inflections
