Hey there, Vern. I’m so glad you’re here to join us today.
Do you remember Ernest P. Worrell - the first viral superstar? "KnoWhutImean?” He was huge before smartphones and that strange new app called tik tok that all the kids are on nowadays.
“Today’s the day Vern, when Ernest will go down in those big, thick history books.”
So come on, let’s look at the colorful life and tragic ending of Jim Varney, the man that stared straight into the hearts of all media lovers in the 80s and 90s. But if you think Ernest was all Varney accomplished, or that Jim himself was a bubbling fooled - you’d be sorely mistaken. Jim always had a knack for making people laugh. The people who worked with him said that he was funnier off camera than he was on. Ernest was lovable, goofy beyond belief, and very relatable. We all know someone like him and that’s why the character was so successful. I’m looking at you Uncle Glenn.
I’m your host - Nostalgic Nick! And let’s jump on in and see if I can channel as much contagious energy as Ernest! If you enjoy this video, please give it a thumbs up, don’t be shy, Ernest never was. and subscribe to our channel so you never miss an episode!

I also adored him in the role of "Jed Clampett" in the movie version of "The Beverly Hillbillies. True, he was no Buddy Ebsen, but he brought his own unique style to the role, and that's what I loved about him in this film.

I actually dressed up as Ernest one year for Halloween. Had the whole getup... His khaki hat, the gray pocket tee with denim Wrangler vest.. Even the shoes.. It was perfect. I even practiced enough and got good at his facial expression when he goes "Eeeeeeewwwwwwww" Everyone knew exactly who I was

I was lucky enough to meet him at some gas station when I was a kid. I walked up and asked if he was Ernest. He laughed and said, 'Only when I'm workin'.' He was, in fact, one of the nicest people I've ever met. Three years later, I randomly happened to bump into him again. And, to my utter superprise, he remembered me. THAT blew my mind. So sad that he went so soon.

Chuck : Your name ain't Elms? Ernest P. Worell : No. Ernest. Chuck : We're holding these reindeer for a guy named "Helper Elms". Now, we've got some REAL good questions, and he'd better have some REAL good answers. Ernest P. Worell : Look, it's a long story, but before I tell you, let me ask you something. I grew up in the town Jim lived in. As you would expect, everyone knew Jim. But it wasn't just the terminally ill kids that got to meet Ernest in person, if the local school had a public event, Jim might be there dressed as Ernest and swamped with kids and parents around him. To us yes he was Ernest but he was also just Jim. Even today, those of us that know, are proud to say that this is where home was for Jim Varney.

Jim was a special human. Deserves a comedy award. * I'll never forget my dad being mad for me renting an Ernest movie instead of a tough guy karate movie, like my brother, him, and I normally did on weekends. My brother gave me a hard time too, well I remember feeling about 2 inches tall for being a little wimp. When I was 4-5, Ernest Goes to Jail was my favorite movie. My dad would borrow it from a guy he worked with, but I liked it so much, he just ended up buying it from him. I saw Ernest Saves Christmas as an adult, and I found myself still watching like little kids do, where they just stand in front of a TV, attention undivided. Even watching interviews now, he still cracks me up. But I had no idea he was such a charismatic star, with such a long history before the Ernest movies ever hit. It's pretty remarkable, I think Jim Varney was a profoundly talented person. More than I ever knew!

It really was a sad day when Jim Varney passed away. I wish he could have been alive to showcase his acting talents more because he was brilliant (and very underrated). He was one of the few wholesome celebrities too. He didn't do anything harmful (at least anything that would place him under the Celebrity Privilege umbrella along with most of the other famous people who have done wrong but get a pass for bringing happiness to large crowds), he was a chill person according to those who worked with him, he was even not above meeting fans (including the kids who grew up with his movies). At the end of the day, Jim was a gift too pure for this sadistic world.
