Hey Jim, just cut a slot in each end of the conduit and pry them apart a bit and they'll stay just fine. To eliminate any and all smoke, and I mean ALL of it, take a second barrel, cut out the top and bottom, make a cut from top to bottom, pull the ends together a bit, tack weld, and make it so that there is an inch of space all around between it and the outside barrel. Put a lid on the outside barrel, then cut out the center of the lid so that the space between the two barrels is covered. Then, put a circle of holes in the inside barrel about one inch from the top. You would make the inside barrel shorter, and let it sit on the grate. What happens is that the space between the barrels gets real hot and creates a vacuum, which sucks any smoke downward, which then mixes with fresh air, and is then drawn into the space, and gets real hot, and when it comes out of the holes it meets the flame and burns like mad because the gas in the smoke ignites. There will not be even a hint of smoke, no smell, no burning eyes, and is perfect to stand around in freezing weather with some marshmallows. There will be no specks of anything flying through the air because it all got burned. You can expect the flame to be about two and a half times higher than the barrel which is because of the gas. Just make sure that any and all fuel is below the holes as anything above the holes will smoke. What's really amazing is that in the winter you can feel the cold yet stay warm at the same time, and no smelly cloths, and it feels amazing. You'll be able to almost hug the flame and still be comfortable. Family and friends will love it as a real fun thing to do. You could mount the whole thing on an old mower deck to move it around the yard to wherever the fuel is. BTW Jim you do a good presentation.

I made one exactly like yours. I burned while I mowed my yard, returning to the barrel to add brush. I burned for several hours, probably 6 or 8 barrels full with some logs 4-5 inches in diameter.

Hi Jim - it's Big Rodders from Ireland. An interesting version of the old volcano stove principle. For folk with less room in their yard another simple idea is to use a washing machine drum which, being stainless steel, will not rust. Remove it from from the machine, a task in itself, and reverse the offset pulley on the rear so it acts as a stand and raises the drum maybe 9 inches off the ground. Cut a slot like yours in the bottom, face it towards the wind and "Bob's your Uncle"! The greater the wind the better it burns - and we know about wind on the west coast of Ireland! The firebox volume is smaller than your stove and air dispersal into the heart of the fire isn't as efficient but, as you say, "as long as it works". The best part is that the cost is ZERO - Yippee!

You could build a rebar frame grate with legs for a few dollars and set it inside the barrel save all that time and money

Exalant. A suggestion for measuring around a curve is to use a seamstress tape. I work with pipe and it is one of my main tools

I cut both ends off the barrel and set it on a grate I had welded up out of rebar. Works great and barrels seem to last much longer.

4/13/22 I officially made your burn barrel thanks! I’ll test it out tomorrow. Your instructions were good enough for me to put the barrel together. I started with nothing so the est. total I spent was about $115. Tools are WAY cheaper at Harbor Freight Tools rather than Home Depot, Lowes!

Good deal Jim, one thing though, Most electrical conduit is galvanized, be very careful welding on that. Best wishes from Montana

Be sure to check with your local Fire Department,as burn barrels are illegal in town around here. I’d add a 2” hole under the grate level to insert my weed burner and a few pavers to keep it off the ground while still keeping it stable. Nice build, Jim!

Great Idea, I moved from Homestead FL and got a place in Chiefland (North Central FL, Levy County) on 2 acres next to the State park here. Got lots of trees that drop leaves and sticks etc. but I been afraid to build a fire and burn them because I am in the middle of a forest. I don't want an ember to float up and get out of control. This looks like a good solution to that problem. My neighbor burned a bunch of stuff last year and I was sitting here just hoping he didn't set the woods on fire. I will feel a lot better with everything contained safely. I'm gonna do this one.

Those pipe you could easily just squish the ends after they're installed, either with good sized vise grips or a couple hammers , hold one under the pipe then hut the pipe with second hammer. With the pipe flattened out a little it will be bigger than the hole. 2 seconds per pipe and done.
