Infectious Mononucleosis (Mono) | Epstein-Barr Virus, Transmission, Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatment
Infectious Mononucleosis (also known simply as Mono or Mononucleosis) is a condition whereby immune cells (known as monocytes) increase in levels due to an infection (most commonly by Epstein-barr virus, or EBV). In this lesson, we discuss how this virus is transmitted, along with the signs and symptoms of mono, how it is diagnosed and how it is treated.

As a teenager I missed at least 8 weeks of school. It was a full holiday trimester I spent with mono. I was diagnosed at an emergency room and was told I likely got it from one of three of my restaurant jobs from sharing drinking cups. My throat swelled so much I could barely drink liquids. I slept for 8 weeks getting up every 24 hrs to bathe and go back to bed. I had a white gooey blanket in my throat and tongue. No med, just rest and fluids. Fever, headache and Every muscle of my body was screaming. Lost 20 pounds but was too tired to care. The thing is I never really recovered fully. I was going to school and night school, working 3 partime jobs before mono. After recovery I never regained my energy and stamina. I could only do day school and never did go back to work during high school. The Fatigue never really went away. Then was later diagnosed with celiac disease and fibro about early 30's. Having mono was a very pivotal time in my life. I was used to doing sport practices, working, schooling and babysitting, but after mono it all changed. no more sports or working. Just activity that was priority, like getting enough credits to graduate. There was no energy for socializing.

Thank you for sharing your story. It was very informative and helpful. I know that must have been hard. I went through a similar experience and just was never the same, also left with chronic fatigue. I hope the lord blesses you and you can regain all that energy! Also, for me and my energy; well what works for me is to eat a lot of protein and to drink this tea called “Energy Tea”. I first found it at Mckays but Mckays has closed down in my small town now. It’s green and in a cardboard box. Take one pack and put it in your tea, then wait 10 minutes and you should begin to feel a difference. ❤Hope this helps!!

I became ill around age 16, circa 1986. I was falling asleep in class for many consecutive days. One day I came we home from school, laid down and woke up the next day. I remember having the worst sore throat of my life. My mother took me to our pediatrician. By the time we arrived home, the phone rang as we we walked into the back door. It my my doctor. He asked for my Mom, indicating I has tested positive to Mononucleosis. I had a knot on my right neck (lymph node) that became so inflamed it stayed that way for months. I distinctly remember having a thick white substance on both sides in back of my throat eerily reminiscent of ricotta cheese (sorry gross) . It was so thick and packed back there. I recall taking a straw to pick it out. I also had white specks under my tongue. I just felt “diseased”. Like so sick. I remember my stepfather praying over me. I remember thinking, am I going to die? (A teenager trying to put this all together) I don’t recall any treatment, meds other than Mom checking on me, making me soup (no appetite) but I remember my old South Georgia native doctor’s Voice (southern US) telling me I couldn’t drive bc my spleen was enlarged. Worrying that if I wrecked my car, steering wheel trauma could cause my spleen to rupture. Those days we had no air bags. Randomly wore seatbelts. He told me “NO MORE DRINKING AFTAH Each other!” My doc said, “you teen age-agers drinking after one anotha at the Burga King, is likely how you got this!” Jokingly. That southern drawl of his sticks in my head. He was an excellent physician. He took wonderful care of my brother and me growing up. I will never forget him. To this day, I don’t drink after people. Rarely even after my kids. Lastly, I missed several days if not two weeks of school. I slept and slept. It was the sickest I can recall, I was pale and lost 7-10 lbs, that was a lot for an already a thin teen. I hope one cannot get mono again. And I pray that kids don’t get it. Neither have had it. Thank you for this informative video.

It doesn't necessarily means increased MONOCYTES. Mononucleosis because increased of cells with 1 nucleus and this is LYMPHOCYTES since this is viral infections. Monocytes in blood count are usually insignificant and not used to diagnose IM. Says by most of the references I've read.

If 90-95% of the adult population test + for the EBV antibodies, isn't the 5-10% negative population more interesting in the case of Hodgkins lymphoma? As mentioned here, the tests show 50% of the Hodgkin patients are sero(+) for EBV Abs. Thereby the other 50% is from the rarer "5-10% sero(-) pool".

Looks like i am not the only one here thinking abt IM, after recovering from covid. I caught covid in early sept and took 8 days to be negative. Then i had a mild asthma which i used oral steriod and inhalers, about 2 weeks later, i suddenly had a bad sore throat, swollen lymph node, high fever, my tonsils had some white pus on and off. The painful lymph nodes made me suspect mononucleosis. Antibiotics on day 3 and having low grade fever currently. Sore throat is gone, but lymph nodes swelling and pain continued. I was previously tested on serology few years ago to be EBV equivocal. 2 days ago, i also had greenish yellowish phlegm. Mostly dry cough and my nose is runny. Headache too. I don't think it is flu as i wear mask all the time.

I’m pretty sure I’m affected by this chronically. Especially when I get sick from another virus I wonder if EBV reactivates. I’m always tired. I noticed over the years that electrolytes and magnesium make a huge difference in how I feel. My aldosterone is low and I wonder if it is related to a chronic infection affecting my adrenals. Aldosterone is the hormone that regulates electrolyte function

After a couple of weeks the lump is still there and he started getting fevers and hives. Doctor did blood test and it came back positive but now we have to go get blood work for the lump. I got it at about age 7 from my babysitter. It was so bad, that I was sick the entire summer vacation from school, I finally felt a little better and my dad took me to a toy store to pick out a birthday gift and then I had a relapse. Not sure how much longer I was out. I slept like 23 hr and 45 minutes a day. Got up to eat a little soup and go to the restroom. Had a sickly life since... had all kinds of "diseases" Fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue. Now being worked up for a possible lymphoma with an oncologist. Oh yes and now in kidney failure. I truly don't feel like I will be around very much longer. Also interestingly I read the Medical Medium book and it was like reading my life story of illness from this darned EBV! It has settled in my thyroid so that probably had a hand in my kidneys going south as it is a hyperthyroid so it's like being on too much coffee and high blood pressure. I am more exhausted than I was as a child now but am the sole caregiver to my hubby who has dementia and strokes. His family is very quickly trying to get him placed somewhere as I can't take care of him much longer. This is such an insidious disease!

I believe I caught mono at a party. I'm 76 years old. In April 2024, I started to feel tired, and had an imperceptible twitch in the corner of my lower right lip, only once in a while. My daughter started to get nearly the same symptoms, except for the twitching, but even worse since she is immune compromised. She confronted me and told me that she caught herpes IV from me. I didn't know what she was talking about. She then explained that I caught mono from one of the women at the party, probably from a woman who talks loud and could have accidentally spat in my drink. After hearing that, I told my friend that, according to my daughter, I had EBV. She then answered that Marie-Jo, the loud woman who sat next to me, had it and passed it on to her daughter and probably to me. All women in my party were vaccinated. I'm not. I believe that Covid vaccine and perhaps those who caught Covid have opened the door to that horrible dormant disease. I had a test and my doctor told me it was negative in spite of being constantly tired. The only moment I'm revived it's when I work in my garden. How weird.

I’ve had mononucleosis twice. Once as a teen, again around age 38. I live with constant muscular /joint pain & swollen lymph nodes. Have developed issues with moderate to severe environmental allergies over time & now am on immunotherapy. Am always tired. Was never officially diagnosed with EBV but am highly suspicious that I carry it. I have several weeks out if the year where I’m more symptomatic & it usually takes weeks to recover. But I’m never fully recovered. I suffer with fatigue often. I always have elevated ANA levels. I start seeing a rheumatologist soon to explore a possible rheumatoid arthritis & have had a positive juxtaarticular osteoporosis. I think it’s all because if mononucleosis.

When i was 14 years old, i had strep throat, they gave me amoxicillin and my body broke out in hives everywhere. This is how I found out I had mono, I believe I contracted it from a childhood friend who unfortunately had very poor living conditions and my young self did not think to ask my friend to wash her cups and utensils before giving them to me. Now that I am 21 years old, i'm just now finding out mono is a type of HSV. I've been in almost a 2 year relationship and have disclosed my mono diagnosis as a kid, but ever since that initial reaction to the amoxicillin i've never had any issues besides the lifelong fatigue. I'm assuming my partner doesn't know it's a type of HSV, what's the best way to talk about this situation? Great video by the way!!!
