Now, in the heart of winter, let's explore one of the standout vampire properties of the 2000s and a remarkable limited series comic: 30 Days of Night. Originally conceived as a rejected movie pitch, the comic gained fame and, in typical Hollywood fashion, was eventually adapted into a film with a direct-to-video sequel. Join me in delving into the dark and gritty world of both the comic and movie, examining how closely the film aligns with its pulpy counterpart.

SERIES SYNOPSIS: Joblo Horror originals goes beyond looking at the behind-the-scenes of horror movies and instead take a deep dive into what book or story the movie was adapted from. Heavy hitters and films that you didn't know were based on stories alike will be compared, contrasted, and dissected to find out what's different, what's the same, and which one is better. I love 30 Days of Night. The vampires look just like the ones in the comic book. Josh Hartnett did a fine job as the lead.

I like this movie a lot. The vampires in this film are not romantic. These vampires smell bad, stink of death, have dirty, sharp teeth, and very bad breath. They will not bother to seduce you before biting you, you will feel their foul breath and they will suck your blood mercilessly.

The graphic novel compares these vampires as great white sharks, which i found absolutely terrifying. Like land sharks, consuming flesh without compassion.

And although the media is full of popular and famous horror films about vampires, however, "30 Days of Night" is one of the few movies that truly made the image of vampires terrifying. These are no ghouls, which can be easily killed with an aspen stake or holy water. These are ghosts of the night. Everything about them is frightening: their black bottomless pupils like sharks, a row of crooked teeth like piranhas, their grouping and methods of luring victims like a pack of predators, their sadism and ruthlessness. But what could be even scarier to die from their claws and teeth is to become a vampire yourself. After all, as Marlow (leader of the cult) said, there is no hope in this fate, only hunger and pain.

The decision to make the vampires speak their own language was a stroke of genius. It absolutely cements their otherness & just sends a shiver down your spine when they communicate. When marlow speaks in broken English to denounce god it’s devastating. Properly horrible. Excellent film.

@@boomstickman71 That’s a good sells pitch for me. What are your thoughts on the remake that’s coming? I read that this new version of Eric Draven is supposed to be more closer to the graphic novel, but the information could be wrong.
@boomstickman71
@boomstickman71 5 ай бұрын
I'm cautiously optimistic. As much as I love the first film with Brandon Lee, there is a lot that it changed from the source that I'd like to see go back to the source. That being said, I've been burned too many times with film makers saying they are going to be more true to the source material, and then just making a carbon copy of the original film instead. The Carrie remake stands out.
@boomstickman71

btw, Eric doesn't have a last name in the comic. Draven was made up for the movie. And, he's not a musician.

If you liked this movie, you might want to check out "Frostbite" (a.k.a. "Frostbiten") from 2006. "The film takes place in a small town in northern Sweden during midwinter, making the environment perfect for vampires to hunt townspeople due to the cold weather and small amount of daily sunlight. It is Sweden's first vampire movie." - Wiki

I agree it's one of the few times the adaptation is better than the source material. The original comic feels like a first draft, while the movie feels like a revised, improved version of the same story.

This movie is one of the few that manages to make me feel trapped and cut off. You can feel the hopelessness of these people as Josh’s character attempts to save those with common sense while idiots rightfully are killed off. The survivors of this are resourceful, resilient, and earn their moments of emotion because it’s not until the end when the final fight arrives. The story’s tragic end also isn’t melodramatic. It’s painful, to the point, and just like experience death itself, you feel little closure when the film ends. The vampires might be gone, but they still won. Families are destroyed. Loves were taken. And nobody will know what happened until the sequel.

I'm more a comic guy so for me, once the property lost the art of Templesmith, it lost what made it most remarkable. I'd have liked to have seen the movie do a better job of reflecting his style in the creature design, cinematography, and lighting/colour-effects, to really play up what made the book so visually special in the first place.

Damn good vampire movie. Probably the last good vampire movie to come out right before the Twilight franchise turned them into emo teenagers. These vampires are more like the ones in the John Carpenter movie “Vampires “ except way more brutal. They survive in the shadows, sleep wherever, and see humans as nothing more than food.

These are the scariest vampires I've ever seen. Their faces all look the same, like they're a separate species. When the humans here turn into vampires, their faces don't change into what I call a "Down Syndrome" kind of look which leads me to believe they were born that way. Vampires born from vampires, going back thousands of years with their own language...possibly from another planet. We don't know for sure they don't age. This could be the latest generation. Also, they don't want humans to be turned. I think they want to get rid of all the humans in this small town so they can take it over and breed their kind freely. That's my take.
