I've always felt that Bo was stomped on by the head Vampire as a reward of a quick death instead of torture, as a sign of respect for actually putting up a fight.

Honestly, yea. Some Vampires, especially one that is a Vampire Lord, are likely old enough to have been from a time that a code of honor was an important thing so maybe he saw that sacrifice play as an act worthy of a more “respectful” death. At least, assuming “quick” and “respectful” are synonyms in Vampire terms.

Another perspective is the head vampire didn't want to risk a fighter like Bo turning into a vampire and killing him. Exactly what happened with Josh's character, who was also a fighter.

Regarding the sled dogs: in folklore, vampires generally hate dogs. One reason is probably that a vampire is essentially a walking talking corpse, so dogs likely smell them and go nuts, alerting their prey (humans).

Exactly. On top of the dogs ( vastly) superior sense of smell, they also have better hearing and much better night vision than us bipedal primates. Also, a bunch of Alaskan town folk, likely armed with high caliber firearms PLUS a bunch of angry, tough, large dogs is more of a danger to the vamps than the Alaskan town folk alone. Why not cull the odds in your favor as soon as possible and go after targets who can't relay what happened if any of them do survive the slaughter?

I agree but isn’t the wolf a creature of the night and is always seen in vampire lore hell even Dracula turns into one so maybe it’s because the dogs are domesticated and not really wolves but as far as I know vampires should be able to communicate and control them

It does not matter who or what you are: a bloodthirsty vampire, a horde of zombies or a giant underwater behemoth. You do not fuck with camera man. He's the only one who survives every single time.

There's literally a train that makes the rounds to this town daily, it never stops for snow or weather as it's on raised tracks. You can even see them in the movie on the edge of town, they didn't even edit them out. This is the most commented on aspect of this film and it's utter levels of stupidity.

@@KnightandDay33 The Director David Slade was asked in numerous interviews both during and after promotion of the movie about the obvious train tracks and platform on screen. In the first interview, he was like "what train?" and the interviewer showed him on his laptop, Slade responded "well that's a glaring problem". When asked why he didn't include the vampire council in the movie, he said it wasn't important. The interviewer had to tell him it's literally the driving plot of the comics. When asked to explain why the vampires weren't constantly resurrecting from all the blood everywhere, Slade said it had nothing to do with the movie. The whole point of the movie is that these vampires are impossible to kill, even after becoming ash, blood touching the ash fully resurrects them. They go into extreme lengths to explain that the vampire virus is truly immortal and cannot be stopped, except by the vampires themselves NOT spreading it. That's the whole reason why the lead vamp orders decapitating victims and gets pissed when he finds a new vampire. Keeping the vamp population low and killing in an undetectable manner is the whole point of the movie/comics.

Another overlook, was the dog killing! I don’t think they were shanked to stop people from escaping I believe it was more likely they were shanked to stop the dogs from making a commotion and alerting everyone some stuff was going down during the first attack!

One big thing you've overlooked, if they took down the cell tower. The company would send people in to fix and repair it, also the government would be aware that the tower went down because the telecom companies are all tied in via backdoors. So they would send out a tower technician and once it wasn't fixed and they didn't hear back from them the government would be coming in

Let’s be honest you can’t really apply logic to these types of movies. Hypothetically let’s say Vampires existed and society was unaware. The best way to keep it a secret is hunting down a person or two in a single town and moving on as it was said in the beginning of the video. Otherwise their secret would last a total of a single town attack regardless of whether the government knew if it was vampires or not they’d know that something attacked the town and had to be tracked down and killed ASAP. Thus, vampires would be dead or scattered a few days after the town attack.

Yeah, the vamps' plan lacked sustainability, but I think that's what attracted them. They've been able to sustain for decades, (maybe centuries?), already. This was a chance for them to go wild, then back to the routine of staying hidden. After the first few steps were enacted, there was no need to strike from the shadows. They were probably excited by something new, so didn't think of every single possible outcome.

If I remember correctly, the human stooge that the vampires sent to wipe out the phones, dogs, helicopter, etc was terminal. He was going to die unless they turned him into a vampire, so he agreed to help them with slaughtering the town.

I always disliked that aspect of vampire lore because what consists of a private dwelling can be complicated with a lot of grey areas e.g. a business doesn't count but a trailer does. So what if a guy who owns a business decides to sleep there occasionally? Can they still break in? They explore this idea in True Blood and while I don't like the idea in and of itself, I do like what the writers did with it.

Honestly, the only way I can excuse it is if it’s not a hard-and-fast rule, but more just a custom, like they can just walk in, but most of them choose not to (maybe out of courtesy?)

@@heartofthewild680 I remember in True Blood when Sookie revoked Bill's invitation that he was being compelled to leave the house by some supernatural force that he couldn't fight against Also with the private vs public property thing, they mentioned this at some point in Buffy The Vampire Slayer, where the vamps were able to enter a school gymnasium during a prom. The school gym was public property so vamps could enter without invitation

I think the idea is the low intensity. What annoyed me about the mocie is they figured out uv light is the ultimate weapon and just left it as a trap. That's a gg weapon. If youre in something they cant burn w that and a generator they cna touch you. Heck sitting in the middle of town with it lit up and a few guns and they cant come near you

Yeah the frequency of the light bouncing off the moon is altered. You ever get a sunburn after spending hours in the moonlight? I know I have never experienced nor heard of such a thing.

One thing I never understood is how was the guy able to slaughter all of the dogs so easily without getting injured if it was just a normal human. They would have definitely fought back since they were chained down and watching their team getting killed. I don’t doubt he could have done it but he would have gotten messed up at least a little bit. Especially if he didn’t use a firearm.

Sorry i'm late but this could have been a cool idea to implement. If the town had a nail salon, odds are there would be a bunch of UV lamps available. For a lot of gel polish manicures UV light is required to harden the lacquer and make it more durable. Heck alot of them are battery powered and portable. They could just stick them by any windows or entrance ways and turn them on as the vampires got close.

I mean, moonlight is just light reflected from the sun, so there would be small amounts of UV at night. You could theoretically increase the intensity of the moonlight via a magnifying glass or a series of lenses. I doubt it would be enough to cause any sort of harmful reaction, though.

Two things ignored: First Alaska is one of the most heavily armed states, with a high concentration of those weapons is rural and small communities. They also tend to be higher caliber compared to the rest of the country. So not only will the vamps run into lots of guns, but those guns will be large bore ones designed to put down bears. The second thing is that the primary means of distant communication is remote areas of Alaska are radios rather than phones. There are bound to be multiple radio base stations which are completely unaffected by taking out the cell tower. The town would not lose communication with the outside world.

Seriously, I went to visit some friends in Alaska and they always had at least two guns on them just to go outside. Not to mention if their sheriff warned them of danger. They would be armed to the teeth.

Not just that, the number of people in Alaska who have top notch HAM and CB rigs built directly into their homes is through the roof. Sure, local repeaters might be down... but there are like 5 people in MY town with rigs that can reach 80 miles without a repeater or tower... and radio is virtually ALWAYS just a hobby with zero utility where I live.

I used to think the same thing, "who would walk outside if they heard an animalistic shriek" , I heard a fox screaming for the first time the other night at around 2 am. ( at the time I didn't know it was a fox) And instead of staying in my bed, I waltzed downstairs and opened the back door, Witch faced the woods. The screaming continued, by now I should have came to my senses right? no. I walked towards the woods. lucky it was just a fox. Edit- only as stood in the woods with no shoes on, looking for the source of the screaming did I begin to question my IQ.

They killed the dogs not to prevent them from escaping, but to prevent the dogs from giving a warning of vampires nearby. A dog has far better senses than humans, and could potentially warn them of incoming vampires. It’s even stated in the Vampire Survival Guide that dogs and vampires hate each other and that dogs were incredibly helpful against them. What inspired much of that book? 30 days of night.

@@TheKing-qz9wd How far away do you think you could detect them? Definitely nowhere near as far as dogs could. Further, there are other senses to consider. Vampires are very much quiet, as many other predators during the hunt until they begin the chase. It is likely that it would be hard for humans to hear them on approach. Dogs have a much higher chance of hearing that. Some dog breeds were bred specifically for the purpose of effectively being alarms to intruders, such as the Lhasa Apso. The much higher senses of dogs would likely prove invaluable.

I love this type of vampires in this movie. They have this frightening presence and though they look human, you understand they aren't the Twilight type. The stare, teeth, and black eyes with a sense of some type of hierarchy. I don't know, I just always enjoyed this movies portrayal of vampires.

It also helps that my hobby is sustenance living and my husband is a heavy diesel mechanic, car mechanic, and worked as a construction worker with his dad from age 10 to 21. @@lunaballuna Unfortunately planning might only mean so much. In a truly worst case scenario a 10 minute journey by car is a lifetime away. If you are anywhere besides already at your bunker you might not make it if things are bad enough. Roads are the first things that get blocked as panic sets in. Its very easy to underestimate just how far away from safety you are if driving is suddenly not an option. The average American drives 16 miles to work. The average American's primary store they go to is about 4 miles away from their home. If you are at the store in a situation as bad as the one depicted in this movie you won't ever make the 4 miles back to your home where your supplies are.

I'm glad you mentioned be on your guard at all times. Few people live that way, but as I was raised and trained that way, I witness have effective it is. I also am surprised how accurate movies represent humans in real life without their guard up, because if I hear a sound I don't know the origin of, I'm not investigating.

I don’t need planning. I just need to find Blade, tell him some weird vampires are causing havoc in Alaska and offer to pay for his transportation there. He will take care of the rest for sure lol. I always think about this though. When these vampires send out that one woman yelling for help but instead Blade is just picking off the ones on the roof. So when she runs up to the group of them his little boomerang blade thing just flies and takes out the whole group. That would be so cool.

I think the moment they established somehow that vampire blood gives you superpowers but doesn't take away your sanity for a number of hours, they would have started taking volunteers with nothing to lose to take jabs and then try to take out as many vampires as they can. The other point is to sabotage the vampires ship. Won't save you, but would screw the vamps.

They didn't kill the dogs just because they were a means of escape, but because they bark at the vampires which would make moving undetected (for the vampires) more difficult

Even so, there are only a few handful of dogs, and dogs are known to bark at random things like the aforementioned polar bears and pack of wolves. Outright killing them could've alerted the population even more and make them lose some of the element of surprise.

One missed opportunity was for the survivors to make crosses when they realized they were vampires. Crosses make vampires recoil and can even keep them at bay. With the vampires being as ridiculously strong as they are sacrificing one or two spears in the group for crosses would be far better.

I worked in Barrow a few years back and the sheer number of houses that guy who have to sack to get all the sat phones and dogs in town would be pretty much impossible. And the people who live there are hardcore. There were severed walrus heads on people’s porches and caribou legs sticking out of dumpsters, because the culture is so heavily based on subsistence hunting.

The sound design in this movie is just the best. The vampire screeches are the right amount of creepy and alien and the music is really good at building the tension. Just superb.
