Ghost Rider: Revisiting Nicolas Cage's Marvel Misfire

Ghost Rider is one of the least loved Marvel movies. Nicolas Cage’s turn as Johnny Blaze was highly anticipated, but the film fell flat in 2007. Many thought it was a mistake hiring the director of 2002’s Daredevil to helm what ended up being a very mild, family-friendly, PG-13 take on the character. People hated the CGI, as well as the bad guys and the fact that Cage only enters the film after a prologue that seems to last forever. So what went wrong? Plenty, as we’ll discuss in this month’s Marvel Revisited, which is written, narrated and edited by Kier Gomes.
Do you think the 2007 Ghost Rider movie was horrible? Let us know in the comments!

This is a favorite of mine. Nicholas Cage was great as Johnny/ Ghost Rider. The flame transformations and motorcycle riding were excellent. Even though it didn't lead to an epic duo fight, the sequence of him and caretaker riding into battle was great.

I didn't see these movies when they came out or since, but I just like knowing that they exist. Nick Cage is a one if a kind actor that make his shows mesmirising (no matter what the reason for it is). I also love that they used Blaze and not the later ones?) around then. I may never have been into his own series, but I was a huge fan of the Champions back in the 70s and enjoyed every Blaze/Rided guest-starring issue of various series (even Team America). What I get a kick out of is that now every original member of the team has had at least one live action outing (and even Bill Foster). Now if only they can put them all together my childhood dream woukd come true (doubly so if its for an adaptation of their fight with Godzilla).

He said in an interview he didn't want Blaze to be totally edgy like he is in the comics and thought it would be interesting to contrast his personality with the darkness in the story. This is why Blaze eats candy and listens to the carpenters.

Leaving aside comic origins there are parallels between this film and 1997's "Spawn" movie: a character who has a risky job makes a deal with the devil in return for his services, is granted powers as a result, comes across the previous, older man in his position who now serves as his guide, at first struggles with his role and learns to accept it, and finds himself fighting to save the world against great evil.

We definitely should get an R Rated reboot especially after seeing the success of movies like Deadpool. As per the actor choice, the 2 potential people i can see as Ghost Rider are either Joel Kinnaman or Nic Cage himself reprising the role.

I love how pathetic the villains are in this movie. Also, the actor of Barton Blaze (the father of Johnny Blaze aka Ghost Rider) is Brett Cullen who would switch to DC with his appearance in The Dark Knight Rises and Joker where he played a father figure again. Talk about type casting! He also plays the father of Blake Lively in The Shallows. And speaking of, doesn't people say that Eva Mendes basically plays her character from Hitch in this movie? Hollywood at his best!

Let me know what you guys think of this as a recast and possible story. I'd have Keanu Reeves or Garrett Hedlund as an experienced Johnny Blaze then cast Logan Lerman has Danny Ketch. It would be a Disney+ show rated TV-MA. Make it 3-4 episodes (no unnecessary filler episodes), a horror/thriller, and about 45min to an hour each episode. Then I would have this older, more experienced Johnny Blaze teaching the new Rider (Danny Ketch) who is struggling on the concept of revenge vs justice and his new role as the new Ghost Rider in Marvel's supernatural realm, which would be taking inspiration from the story line Howard Mackie wrote in the 90s where Johnny Blaze acted as a mentor to Ketch. Throw in flashbacks of Mephisto regarding Johnny becoming the Ghost Rider and how he defied the devil. Then mirror that to Danny and his journey in defying the devil himself. It will be a passing of the torch story dealing with mentorship, responsibility, and the morality of vengeance despite one's intentions (be it for good or for evil), and how vengeance can be the user's own executioner since the need for vengeance might destroy them in the end. Again, this takes inspiration from the Ghost Rider comics in the 1990s where in the middle of his original run Danny asks the question of whether vengeance really is justice or if it's just its dark imposter. Using a similar concept would be such a cool show in my opinion.

That reminds me; here's who I want to see return as variants of the MCU multiverse, I haven't watched any of these but here goes: Nic Cage's Johnny Blaze, the previous three actors who played The Punisher, Mattfleck Daredevil, The Hoff's Nick Fury, the "Avengers" members of The Incredible Hulk movies (never watched them but I've seen a video with interviews from the actors), a version of The Falcon who CAN psychically link with birds. As for things I HAVE seen: characters from The Gifted (including recasting Andy because of the crap Percy Hynes White did), 2005 Fantastic Four, Venom. There are so many of them that cameoing in just Secret Wars doesn't feel like enough. I almost don't want them to destroy the multiverse unless they recover their Earths. The Arrowverse's Crisis on Infinite Earths ended by recovering only a few Earths and bringing the main shows, two of which took place in their own Earths, into one universe. Which is what I imagine the MCU will do with the X-Men franchise. What I don't want to do, like the Arrowverse, is make them completely separate them from the multiverse and destroy ALL of it. I would keep the variants of the MCU characters we know on their Earths and make the MCU share the same Earth as the X-Men AND Nicolas Cage's Ghost Rider.

The good: The effects, style and voice of GR himself are good. Cage loves GR and it shows in how he throws himself into the character. Sam Elliot is a great addition to the cast. The Hell bike (and its transformation scene) is awesome. The bad: The dialogue is 85% terrible. The villains are pathetic. The movie is overall way too cheesy for such a dark character. GR's one-liners are so cringy. The plot holes are laughable. Now imagine if George "Mad Max" Miller wrote and directed it instead....

I was first exposed to this movie years ago through a music video featuring "Bad to the Bone". The best I describe this movie is that it's like one of those "So Bad It's Good" movies from the late-70s to 80s. All I can say is that while I haven't seen this movie in its entirety, I can say there seems to be a lot of fun to be had with this movie from 2007 than any Marvel movie currently being put out by Disney.

I'm not one of those people that goes into a movie expecting everything to be real or realistic, instead, I simply go to have fun. I had absolute fun during this movie. Honestly, I don't think the directors all that bad, I just think a lot of people are judging too hard. I agree with the dialogue being poorly written, but the adaptation is pretty good, which I agree with that too. My only problem is, they made him into Danny catch, which is the 90s version Ghost Writer, not the 70s Johnny Blaze. The Amalgamated the two. So I have to deduce points for transitioning from one medium to the other. Because honestly, it's just a mix match of the best parts of three three decades worth of the character. That was the most disappointing thing for me.

This is one of those movies that was just hindered too much by the rating. Cage was a phenomenal cast for the role and the only complaint I could ever have is that the action and villains were so mundane. I'd wish Cage could revisit the role in the MCU, but with how they've fallen since Endgame, I don't wish such a fate on any actor today. Until Disney decides that story is more important than agenda, we'll just have to enjoy the two Cage movies we have. Hypothetically though, my fan casting prior to Endgame would have been Norman Reedus.

The ending was stupid. Black heart knew the pin and stare couldn’t work on him. Then continues to consume all those souls so that Ghost Rider could then defeat him. Awesome movie, especially for it's time with Blade being really the only other good comic book movie, I believe. But that gravedigger scene of him riding with Johnny just to turn around infuriates me. They set up something amazing just to rip the rug from under us. Idk if he was scared, or if he simply used up all his power, since he said "this is the end for me." But if that is the case, why waste it simply on the ride over there????? Except for the obvious cool shot. But if he means literally cannot go any farther, why go that far in the first place??? Who knows how far they travelled. Now he has to go back alone possibly in human form. Or he could mean that it has to be Johnny that defeats Blackheart or whatever his name is, and he's just saying it isn't his battle. Which is just horseshit. Just very bad writing at that particular part

He took them out in seconds. They could have been so fucking cool! This group (the hidden). Were the PERFECT match for ghost rider! So how the fuck did this still turn out lame? WTF It moves at such a slow pace. The bad guys are like some bored demons with nothing to do. Their not terrorizing the city. Their not taking hostages. Burning churches. NOT SHIT! WTF everybody looks cool, but that's it. It was just mild. Marvel has a habit of turning all superheros PG-13 no matter who the fuck it is..,.

Mark Steven Johnson is a terrible writer director who doesn't understand the characters. If you listen to the Ghost Rider director commentary, he characterizes Johnny all wrong. The movie alone takes away the whole traveling circus lifestyle, which was a bigger part of the comic. They don't mention Zarathos. Cage was miscast, as was Roxanne. Ghost Rider and Johnny Blaze are my absolute favorite characters.

GR 2 is really good. The villian is dumb but they kicked everything up and it's a fun watch.

I like this one. Unfortunately Ghost Rider live action movie quality nose dived for the sequel.
