Michael Mann's Miami Vice (Collin Farrell / Jaimie Foxx) is a film adaptation made from the popular 80s tv series following two cops as they journey into the gritty underbelly of Miami Florida's criminal underworld. The movie features top notch performances, wonderfully nostalgic needle drops, a very vibe-heavy musical score and not to mention an artistic visual language that allows you to see much more than you hear in this dark crime drama. The question today is- how does it hold up? Let's find out today!

Miami Vice was a network television series, not cable. That said, I felt like Mann did a killer job bringing it to the big screen. I think it was a great move that he went modern instead of period piecing it.

I think that you hit the nail on the head - the chemistry between Collin Farrell and Jaimie Foxx was flat and there we traces of hostility between them that leaked through from time to time. I think that this had the bones to be a great movie, but it still a good watch and is better to me with every re-watch.

This film holds a special place in my memory. My best friend and I had gone to see Pulse. After being utterly letdown by that poor excuse for a horror movie, I offered the idea to hop over to the screen next to Pulse cause we didn’t feel we got our money’s worth and the other movie was about to start. We ended up in the late showing of Miami Vice with maybe 3 or 4 other people. Needless to say Miami Vice was incredible compared to the lameness we had just sat through. My only regret from that night was that my ticket money went to the wrong film. I did buy the movie when it came out to make up for it.

I like this movie a lot, ... I've watched it dozens of times. I think it's one of Michael Mann's masterpieces. And regarding comparison to the TV series which I watched as a kid, this "Miami Vice" flick stands rightfully by itself (meaning I really don't care about the TV series when watching this film). Colin Farrell's performance I found to be excellent as well as most of the cast. John Ortiz is great and so is Gong Li, and I'm glad I was introduced to Luis Tosar (great actor also in many of his other films) in this film. The locations and scenery for each shot, the style (from clothing to cars, real estate--homes to powerboats), the mood in each scene, as well the attention to detail (like the choice of airplanes and weapons ... it helps to hear Michael Mann's commentary on the DVD/Blu-Ray... it's really good and insightful) are all top quality. And then there's a truly excellent soundtrack with the contemporary version of "In the Air tonight" by Nonpoint and Manzanita's "Arranca" (with an engaging dance scene between Farrell and Li set in "Havana" in the film) and "New World in my view" (King Britt's remake of Sister Gertrude Morgan's classic), and "Pennies in my pocket" (Emilio Estefan), to India.Arie's "Ready for Love" ... just one song after another contribute to the mood. BTW, the lighting is just top-notch. The film is good with a good ending and what looks like a bit of "glorification" of crime during the movie, then in the end it shows the dark side of crime with death and that crime just doesn't pay. Dialogue is okay, nothing too intellectual of course, but more surface stuff, but like most viewers I think we enjoy mostly the style, the mood/ambience, the overall thrill, etc. as Michael Mann has the gift to draw us into the location for each shot as if we were right there watching it all right in front of our eyes.

I do agree about Farrell and Foxx’s lack of chemistry. It’s partly due to Foxx’s ego trip and Farrell being so coked out of his head, he did say later in life that he barely has any recollection filming the movie.

As someone who was in their 20’s when Miami Vice came out (and loved seasons 1 & 2 I think they lost their way after) and 40’s when the movie came out, I liked the both because, to me, they stand on their own. You could not recreate the vibe of the 80’s. You really had to be there. Anyway, when I saw the ending of the movie, it reminded me of the probably the greatest episode of MV “Evan” (did a great job of handling homophobia and what was going on with AIDS in 1985).

I was not a fan of the film when I first saw it in theaters, but it has since grown on me quite a bit and holds up very well. Mann's choice to make it more neo noir type thriller was an interesting one. Part of me thought it should have had more neon like the show did but it still works just fine the way it is.

This movie is a masterpiece. It has layers and maybe you don't understand the story on first watch. I like to rewatch this movie. So many messages and feelings there. The loss of your loved one, the cost of the war on drugs and drug abuse in the world, the integrity of law enforcement and how much one willing to sacrifice for his job or his loved one. So many people missing the point and handle this as an action movie. This is an atmospheric trip. (Like Spring Breakers) Do yourself a favor and watch it!

I remember thoroughly disliking this when I watched it after its home video release. Though it did stick with me. Over the years, I've come to associate it with the era and HDDVD/Bluray format war, as the marketing was everywhere, and so many DVDs of the time had ads for it. I remember seeing so many copies and displays in Best buy and smaller family run stores. Maybe it was the nostalgia factor, but I gave it a rewatch last year and my opinion changed. Even if I necessarily don't like the plot or characters, its just got a feel to it that's hard to put to words.

I'll have to give it a rewatch b/c I didn't like it at the time. It was a lot noise and steely looks and that was about it (b/c I don't remember a thing about the story but I still remember the TV pilot episode). I do agree that Farrell and Fox had no chemistry and their line readings at times are dry. I have the same feeling when it comes to this film and Blackhat that neither have any soul. We are supposed to care but the story is so thinly drawn that we don't. Miami Vice does feel like a missed opportunity for a great action flick.

They should have released the DVD with a bonus copy of the 1st 5 episodes of the 80's TV show & a video catalog to order the TV show seasons or box set for people like me that have never watched the show. They really should do that for all the remade movies of old TV shows, like what's a disc cost them verses advertisement costs, and this way it's direct marketing not wasting money on useless eyeballs.

The time to make a Miami Vice movie was 30 years ago where you could have used Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas and made a 2-hour Miami Vice episode that could take advantage of all the blood and violence and sex and swearing that a TV show was sorely missing. This movie could have been named anything but Miami Vice and it would have still stood by itself. This was not Miami Vice.
