I know that everyone says that Leif Babin sounds like Batman and it's true,he does but I agree with Andy Stumpf,Leif has a voice for radio. I even think and I say this with all seriousness,that he has a voice for voice-acting in movies and voice-overs for movie trailers(so does Jocko).But both of them are doing fine doing what they're doing so I'm not suggesting they go into movies but it's not like there aren't any veterans who went into acting and even directing. Humphrey Bogart,Lee Marvin,John Ford,Don Adams,Charlton Heston,Jimmy Stewart,R.Lee Ermey,Oliver Stone,Dale Dye,Rob Riggle,Adam Driver,Mark Valley,Harvey Keitel,Rudy Reyes(who actually played himself in Generation Kill),Jesse Ventura(like him or not,Ventura is still a veteran),Bob Ross,Drew Carey,Morgan Freeman,James Earl Jones and a whole bunch of other veterans have been in acting or directing.If Randy Couture(who is a veteran)can act in movies,so could Jocko and Leif. Even Bea Arthur from the show The Golden Girls was in the military! And I would be remiss if I didn't mention that Kevin Lacz,who was in Task Unit Bruiser with Jocko and Leif even played himself in American Sniper! But I just say all that to say how talented and impressive these guys are and as an example of some of the other things that they could do-IF they wanted to.There are a lot of people who can't do a whole bunch of different things like guys like Jocko and Leif can.

I love that time is not really a factor in the Jocko Podcast. It could be 2 hours, it could be 4.5 hours, it could be longer. It could be shorter. Most podcasts I've seen limit themselves to an hour or maybe 2.5 at the absolute MOST. Jocko? 4 hours. 5.7 hours. Whatever. I love it.

I feel compelled to expand on what Leif Babin said (for whatever my two cents may be worth) on the examples in history on this subject. There are also a plethora of historical examples where due to the INACTION of low level leaders, whole armies and Nations have been consumed due to their inadequate actions. It's a wicked double edged sword. Great content I love the application of military ideals in business.

Decentralized command helped me a ton at work. Before I felt like I had shackles when I was handed in a poorly defined objective, but now I see it as an opportunity to take ownership. I come up with a plan, I put it out there, perform necessary tweaks and execute.

You should do a meta-level episode where you take a comprehensive stack of military manuals and warrior writings pertaining to leadership and examine all the impressions/conclusions from them in one go. Draw comparisons of similarity and difference and try to land on a conclusion from it all. I mean, you already look for patterns as they reenforce your own leadership expertise. But on a deeper level to just examine what unifies writing military leaders and institutional publications and what sets them apart. As well as what differentiations actually contribute value despite not being popularly written and what common comments actually fail according to your experience.

“That’s what the 5th law of combat should be: if your plan requires you to make radio coms with your guys, it will not work” I almost instantly thought of Operation Red Wings when he said that. I can’t even imagine how dark of a place those guys were in up on that mountain when the goats and herdsman stumbled upon their position and they were unable to communicate with the command. Absolutely terrible.

I've watched the South Africa interview a few times.It's certainly amusing and entertaining. The hosts asked good questions but sometimes they veered too far off into being clownish and silly(like when one of the hosts called Jocko and Leif ''the Justin Biebers of the Navy SEALs') and Jocko and Leif had to kind of rein them back in with some of the questions. Having watched them over the years in interviews,Jocko and Leif can definitely be funny and they have a sense of humor but they're not comedians and they're not clowns in a circus.They're not like Conan O'Brien and Jim Carrey,who are brilliant and talented(both of whom I'm a big fan of )but who don't mind making fools out of themselves or making themselves look like buffoons to make people laugh.And one of the hosts on the South Africa interview came off that way to me,like he doesn't mind making himself come across as silly and clownish so long as he's being funny and that approach is not the best approach for interviewing guys like Jocko and Leif! Ha! Ha!

The element of surprise on the german attack into the belgian fort might be on the fact that they were 80 against 2000. If one is in a fort with 2000 other soldiers and see an attack - and a successful attack - onemay imagine that they are been attacked by a superior force. The belgian soldier didnt know there were 2000 against 80, but it was him against whatever force is rationally expected to assault a fort.
