I really can’t understand why people were booing the decision either . True , Walcott scored several times in some rounds and made Louis look bad in others , but he must’ve been delusional to think that would have been enough to take his title. For all the backpedaling and running around the ring to avoid getting tagged . Nope, it is the challenger who has to be the aggressor and win CONVINCINGLY.

Max Baer had a great quote about Joe louis and Fear. Something like this, "Fear is seeing Joe Louis on the opposite side of the ring, knowing that Joe wants to go home early that night."

Walcott was such a good fighter. its really too bad he had to wait so long to get the heavyweight championship fights. His duels with Charles were memorable. He gave Louis all he wanted here, and many thought he won. He was beating Marciano when Rocky caught him with a KO punch. Walcott defined the term ringwise: understood angles and distance, moves around the ring like a big cat, excellent counterpuncher as exhibited by that first knockdown.
@capo4ever334 Жыл бұрын
Based on this video(although the rounds aren't the complete rounds) I'd have given this fight to walcott. And he was smoking marciano in the first fight until he got caught. Joe walcott is one of my all time favorite boxers and his right is my favorite punch

As a Louis and Marciano fan, I agree. Unfortunately, all these old fighters don't get enough respect. YT views on Louis even show that. Any fight recorded by any of these fighters should be studied even more than any modern fighter.
@richardweiler39664 жыл бұрын
Walcott made the mistake of so many fighters. Believing he had the decision in the bag, he went defensive during the final 3 rounds, sitting on his assumed lead. Louis swept those late rounds. You can never tell what the judges are thinking. You have to fight every round until that final bell. Also realize that this bout was scored under a rounds system and not points like today. So those 2 knockdown rounds were merely a winning round for Walcott. Not 2 point edges as we would currently see.
@guardshack85373 жыл бұрын
PLEASE, Ali ran around did not fight and still won rounds...example foreman avg 24 landed punches to Ali 12 in first 4 rounds and Judges had Ali winning every round
@richardweiler39663 жыл бұрын
@@guardshack8537 where can I find these punch stats that you allude to? I've never seen any stats like that in any of the boxing records. The fight took place well before the era of Compubox. And Ali hardly "ran around" during the Foreman fight. He spent 90% of the time laying on the ropes, making himself an available target. Right there in front of big George. Rope-a-dope. And Foreman still couldn't do any damage.

Walcott was on the receiving end of the greatest knockout punch in boxing history, the one thrown by Rocky Marciano. Unlike this fight with Louis, in that one Walcott SHOULD have tried to stay out of Marciano’s range in the late-going. In udder words, with the right strategy, Walcott could have won both fights. I see your comments and I think they are very fair considerations. I do consider that the fight may be closer than what the usual highlights and available footage shows. The assumption of robbery does have a lot to do with all the storys and articles written about it and a bunch of comments from people closely related to the fight and also some comments Louis made, although I'm pretty sure Louis also expressed that he thought he did ok and did enough to win.

@@schizoidman9781 Actually Walcott did SOME forward movement but the predominate amount of time he was definitely trying to lure Louis in. Without seeing all the missing parts of this fight, we simply can't score it properly...however the second fight, that WAS conclusive. ;) Also, back in those days...the champ generally had to be BEAT and decisively. We don't see that here. Sure loved watching them in that corner exchanging blows around the 12:30 mark to the end of that round. Awesome...! Perhaps one of the best showings from Walcott against arguably, one of the most complete boxers in History.

@@BrotherPatriot Well said. Sometimes I think about this fight based on Louis' body language once the fight was over etc. This doesn't mean he lost or that he felt he lost but I do believe he did not like this performance. Ty, Sir! :) I agree with what you said completely. Though I have not seen ALL of Walcott's fights, from what I know, I believe this was perhaps his greatest showing...and against who I believe to be the greatest, most complete boxer in History. He really did give great troubles to Joe...I just don't think it was enough to take the title as Joe was driving him all over the ring, just about the entire fight. I personally pick a prime Brown Bomber vs prime anyone. When the Brown Bomber fought Max Schmelling the 2nd time...THAT Joe Louis doesn't loose to anyone and I think that's the only time we ever saw Joe go completely offensive. Sure wish we had got more of THAT Joe...but I honestly just don't think he wanted to actually hurt anyone really bad (Joe really was a GOOD man) because THAT Joe...could have. ;)

@@lefez9015 after the fight, people were in an uproar over the fight, it was being called a robbery and people were even pushing for investigations and overhauls in judging standards. The one judge who scored it for Walcott was Ruby Goldstein, who was praised heavily for doing so. After going into seclusion for a couple days, Louis responded to the uproar about the decision by saying, "I know Ruby. He calls them as he sees them and that should be good enough for anybody." Basically, he agreed with the judge who evaluated the fight as his loss. In fact, it was because of ghe spurious nature of the decision he granted a rematch. If he had lost here by decision or won decisively, he would have retired as planned. The fact the judges seemed to gift him the win really bothered him.

Do specific fights and opponents bring out the best in each other? You bet they do. Joe was on fire for this fight; the energy and inspiration running through his bones that night must have been unbelievable. This is pretty much one of the worst match-ups Louis can have, since mobile slick fighters gave Louis a hard time. I think it would have been great if Walcott took the title in this fight, he fought a hell of a fight. However, Louis was notoriously effective in rematches and I believe the odds are Louis would have taken the title back quickly. At least one thing is for sure, which is that poor judging has been around long before the 80's and 90's lol.

Jersey was the best foot mover back then looked to me to be like a outboxer in the way he kept his distance but was more a brawler/ counter puncher he could catch George with some shots from counters but I dont see him doing a jim sense he was a way more advanced then wal and jim was a full outboxer and add jersey wasnt that tough for damage this is where that outdated movement like I always say comes in people will say Louis could beat George yet Jersey footwork was better and jerseys counters was way more all of a sudden like a mike that Louis never could do from 1 pinpoint punch louis would be destroyed way faster then jersey would like I said uptop jersey stance was more like a outboxer which I said mutiple time Louis would need to do to not be destroyed fast he would need to move they said I was wrong I wasnt same as mike would destroy George cause of the same reasons jersey showed counterpunches and fast combos with great aim

Joe Louis was used to white fighters. Very few blacks were allowed to fight for titles. Louis had trouble with black fighters with style.

another racist comment. Whites are supposed to be inferior athletically. What about Billy Conn? He had that first fight with Louis nearly won before he got stupid and tried to slug it out with Louis.

Theodore Zatorski I think it's more of a comment on style that one race being athletically Superior to the other.

I agree- Mr. Witherspoon. As champion- the only black fighters that Louis fought were John Henry Lewis and Walcott. He destroyed John Henry Lewis- who was the reigning Light- heavyweight champ. Walcott had actually been an early Louis sparring partner. Legend has it that he was asked to leave the training camp because he made the Brown Bomber look bad. He gave Louis all he could handle in both fights.

Rocky MArciano gave Louis problems, of course by that time [and this time as well] Louis was on the downcurb. IMO Louis took the Rocky fight because i heard the SSI department messed up on peoples direct deposit
