John only started to do triple toe towards the end of his amateur career, in fact 1976 may well have been the only year he did a triple toe in competition. Before that he always did triple salchow and triple loop. I think he preferred edge jumps to toe jumps and it was only after moving to America to have his jumps taken apart, dissected and rebuilt by Gus Lussi did he have a triple toe. It's not unusual for a skater to prefer edge jumps to toe jumps and vice-versa. I speak from my own personal experience in that I always preferred edge jumps to toe jumps - I loved loops, salchows and axels, was kind of ok with flip and lutz but for some reason I hated toe loops and didn't have a good double toe - just one of those things.
