Correct... the inside of the gauge wheel is supposed to gently clean the disk opener blade and hold the soil down as the opener blade is beginning to lift out of the soil as it rotates past the bottom point-- break the soil loose from the disk so it doesn't cause "trench wall blowout" where the opener blade brings up a small clod of damp soil. Also by having the gauge wheels lightly touch the disk, it should help prevent "rooster-tailing" where loose dry soil gets pushed up between the blade and gauge wheel tire, which the tire then tosses up into the air behind it as it turns, which falls back in the seed furrow on top of the seed before the closing wheels can collapse moist soil in around the seed... this ribbon of dry soil on top of the seed soaks up moisture from the surrounding soil that the seed itself needs to imbibe in order to germinate, which can slow germination and emergence... The small boxes in back are for dry granular products like insecticides or other dry products... they put out zinc and some other nutrients with them last year. They're only meant for low rate materials (up to about 20-25 lbs per acre, but more typically applied at about 5 lbs/acre). Later! OL J R :)

I also farm for my neighbor and do bailing and mowing and stuff

and I ride four wheelers and mowers, and am about to start hauling firewood with the tractor

I guess the roller pumps were old technology because I sold a lot of them in the late 80s at the JD.

That's what we always used... they're still widely available and quite a few of them being sold. You get up into the larger sprayers and the turbine pumps and centrifugals seem to be the most popular. A lot of the big pull types like Hardi's (like OLF runs) have the piston or diaphragm pumps (fixed displacement) that can deliver more volume and higher pressures... but those are 'spensive!!! We've never really used the electric pumps until we bought a self-contained 14 gallon sprayer to fit onto the back of my brother's high-rider golf cart, that we use for spraying brush and trees at Shiner and running the fences on both farms... last year we hit all the big cactus patches (prickly pear) on the farm and pretty much just nuked the stuff... lot of running back and forth mixing, but it worked well. It's a "demand pump" that switches itself on with a pressure switch to pressurize the hose going to the wand and then shuts itself off. You spray something, the pump kicks on automatically and then runs for a second or two when you quit spraying to repressurize the line, so you always have good pressure and ready to spray... Works GREAT for spraying huisache and mesquite, and trash trees like bois d'arc, toothache trees, and hackberry trees that come up in the fencelines... we run the fences at least once a year with it and the pastures once yearly... With the 3:1 or 4:1 Remedy/diesel mix, all it takes is a shot on both side of the trunk all the way around and a foot or so up off the ground to completely kill the unwanted trees down to the roots... for small "switches" coming up, a squirt on both sides of the stem is all it takes. Once you have the trees taken out, usually 10 gallons of mix will cover the entire farm to control any brush that comes up... works just great! Later! OL J R :)

My uncle's farm is adjacent to my little 30 acre campsite in the woods. It is family land and is probably 2500 acres. The farmer renting it now probably has added another 1000 acres of his own land and land he is renting. Talking about spraying he uses an incredible John Deere self propelled sprayer and I don't have a clue how wide it is. On the other hand I watch a channel called Soybean Farmer and his sprayer tank is a 55 gallon drum standing on end. Both are fun to watch.

Yeah we were a little better off than that (55 gallon drum sprayer) but not by a whole lot LOL:) We've got 87 acres here at Needville and 160 at Shiner 90 miles west of here... all cow/calf now-- quit row cropping in about '03... Later! OL J R :)
