I have a 450b loader I bought 15 years ago just for clearing & heavy lifting around the property the guy didn’t tell me it has problems, when cold I can rip large trees out of the ground the ground when it gets warm it has a lag when going from forward to reverse the warmer it gets the longer the lag talked to a lohn deere dealer a few years ago his advise was to sell it he said it would cost more to fix then it was worth he said they leak by in the transmission when they get older and that is all I could get out of him any idea what leaks or if it is something I can repair

It's the seals in the transmission but not necessarily rubber seals. The clutch packs in the transmission have steal sealing rings ( think piston rings ) and over time they wear out like anything else. Can you fix it? Idk your ability. Can they be fixed? Yes....short answer. The easiest way to pull the trans is to pull it with the engine. With that being said, if you only use it from time to time I'd try a few bottles of Lucas trans fix. It will thicken up the trans oil just enough to help but not hurt. Transmission rebuilds are quite time consuming and costly so try changing the trans filter and oil. Hyguard from JD is pricey so find a value brand that is a J20C spec. and it's the same as hyguard. Add about half a gallon of Lucas trans fix and see if that helps.

@@Otisdiditagain Thank you, I will give the trans fix a try I was wondering about something like that but the way my world works I was thinking it could make things worse the thing is a beast till it starts getting hot I use it to move trees that are too heavy for the bobcat so any improvement would be great

Is there suppose to be hydraulic oil in the steering clutch compartments? Mine is full to the top on both sides and leaking out the top. The last entry in the mech logs before i got it at auction is" hyd oil leaking into clutch. I assumed they meant the main clutch. I did see an early service bulletin On the 80's 450c something about making the clutches a common sump because of a hose that leaks? I have been looking for an oldtimer mech that knows the 80's 450c inside and out. So i could pick his brain. They are all retired :(

If it is a 450c it has wet clutches earlier models were dry clutches. The dry sump does get water and or oil in the case and deere says some fluid in those pumps is normal
