John Deere Tuff Torq K46 Fail and Fix | Tear down and Seal replace

A Farm West of Boring

Күн бұрын

Last year I thought that I had fixed my John Deere x300 Mower by changing the oil in the Tuff Torq k46 Transmission. But I was wrong! I did not pay enough attention to the axle seals which were leaking. So the new oil drained out in a few weeks and I had an inoperable mower again. So I bit the bullet and tore the thing apart and replaced the seals and put in new oil. Not easy but it was satisfying to do. BUT, I made a big mistake at the end of the reassembly that would return to haunt me. You will have to watch Part Two of this project to see what I had to do to fix the mistake.

I sent my Mid pump and Cylinder's to Hydro House in Spring Green Wi. Half the cost of new. Had my Tuff Torq Transmission working perfect for under 125$

Brilliant video - so glad I found it! Think I’ll be doing something similar on a TT K574c (4WD variant). The damn thing won’t go up hills once it’s all up to temperature. Anyway, many thanks for the time you took putting this together.

Mine just barely had a couple of score marks in the different parts in center case on mating surfaces. Had a perfectly flat steel surface with some 600 grit, didn’t take long at all and everything polished out nice, no marks…

@@Dirtywhtboy87930 take it yours wouldn't do hills either when hot? Just wish I could find a YT vid showing the inside of a K574 C.

@@rows3063 yes. I have the K58a. There wasn’t any difference in parts from the k46, except the inlet of the center case has an fluid pump that was pretty simple to deal with.

Not bad for an old man. That center case has a trick to getting it in... brute strength. You compress that SOB and it'll drop right into place.

good video and job. i think the fan was under the pulley. that thing is full of parts i will not be taking any apart and i use to rebuilt motors.i think the one in my old murry mower has same thing in it. take care, be safe and well.

Yes, the fan clearly needs to be under the pulley. And where does the extra clip go? Wait for part 2.

You need to get a tripod so we can see what you’re doing. Do I have to do that just to change a shaft

I did the same with the fan when I replaced the input shaft on my K51A, oops. I wasn't able to reinstall the trans with the fan on top on the Scotts S16/42 and so that's how I discovered my mistake. Now I have to do a total rebuild like you just did because I get almost no movement forward or reverse. Tuff Torq no longer makes the K51A so I'm going to ask them if they still provide rebuild kits for it. I would really like to put in a larger trans like a K66 but I'm not sure if that will work.

I have seen photos with the fan in both positions. It might be different for different models. Mine would have worked but the drive belt was not lined up on the pulley. I did change it and was going to make a video about that, but alas time has not allowed. Since the rebuild the mower is working really well. Look upon ebay that guy in Canada who does the rebuild kits. He might be able to help you. Thanks for commenting.
