Stephen Colbert took over as host of The Late Show on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2015. Colbert is best known for his work as a television host, writer, actor, and producer, and best known for his charity work teaching English as a second language on Tunisian date farms. Prior to joining the CBS family -- and being officially adopted by network president Les Moonves -- Colbert helmed “The Colbert Report,” which aired nearly 1,500 episodes and required Stephen to wear nearly 1,500 different neckties. The program received two Peabody Awards, two Grammy Awards, and several unwelcome shoulder massages. It won two Emmys for Outstanding Variety Series in 2013 and 2014, both of which appear to have been lost in the move. Colbert is pronounced koʊlˈbɛər, according to Wikipedia. His understudy is William Cavanaugh, who will be hosting The Late Show approximately one third of the time. Good luck, Bill!"

When my Catholic School did the Passover celebration, no one mentioned Jesus... it was before Jesus... so what's wrong with Kasich? I thought he read the Bible

+Apples4Applez You're right the first Passover was way before Jesus. As a Jew, Jesus celebrated Passover every year. He had his last supper (what Christians celebrate as communion) as part of the Passover meal and was then killed on Passover. There are lots of connections between Jesus and Passover. The word festival, like festival of Passover, is moed, which means appointed time. The holy days given in the Bible are like appointments God set on His calendar long ago to fulfill His plans.

Just to be clear, the last supper was the Sedar Meal (passover). The bread and wine from communion are part of the Passover Meal. When you see the Sedar Meal through a Christian lens many things in it make more sense. I get that most Jews of course don't think Jesus is the messiah or God but it's not as if Kasich didn't know what he was saying.

+Jonathan Brown He didn't, that is not a part of the jewish faith, even if it is a part of christianity. The jews have spent 2000 years persecuted for not believing in Jesus, they don't need a politician to try to insert him into one of the most sacred holidays in Judaism.

+Edinix Films my point is that what Kasich said is normative Christian belief, not that he should have said it to them. Also there are no one who have been persecuted for 2000 years. Because your ancestors had it tough doesn't mean you do. You don't get sympathy points for hardships others have faced. Not to mention that the Christian, American Right is one of the best things that's ever happened to Jews, especially Jews in Israel.

+Cup O' Thought you are right about the Christian thing, but you first assume that I grew up in America (where I have not experienced persecution for my religion) you guys are pretty good about that. that being said there are places in the world where there is still enormous hate toward the Jews just as there are places in the world where there is enormous hate for other races and religions. I do agree that some jews do try to get sympathy points for things they havnt experienced but living from the age of 2-11 as the only Jew in a small village in northern Spain has shown me that antisemitism is not as dead as Americans and Jews want it to be. It's a tradition to slaughter a lamb in observance of the Passover and subsequent freedom from slavery. When Jesus is captured and dragged through the streets, John equates the two and dubs Jesus the "Lamb of God." (The capture of Jesus having occurred around the time of Passover.)

As a Catholic myself, you do know that Jews (except for Messianic Jews) don't recognize Jesus Christ as The Son of God or their Messiah, right? I mean, Muslims have more reverence for Our Lord Jesus Christ than Jews do (albeit they only seem to see Jesus Christ as a prophet whereas we Christians believe Jesus Christ is The Son of God and Our Lord and Savior).

madmax21st It's a rhetorical statement as in not actually intended for Kasich per se but to anyone actually reading this. A rhetorical statement is not actually intended to receive a response from the person just like how a rhetorical question is not intended to receive an actual answer in response.

Well, the Jews living in Egypt at the time were commanded to slaughter a perfect lamb to protect them from the Angel of death. Many theologians say God used this to foretell that Jesus (a perfect sacrifice) would die to protect people from the consequences of sin. Not saying anyone is right or wrong, but just giving some context for Kasich's comment.

Many people don't understand the connection between the Passover and the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. This is a widely accepted theological believe among Christians, and while it may have been out of place (and awkwardly delivered) to mention it at a Jewish gathering, it was not incorrect. The blatant condescension shown by Colbert only highlights his ignorance on the subject. I realize he was trying to make a joke, but when your punchline is someone else looking dumb and your delivery is devoid of central facts, it backfires in a big way. Not only was it not funny, but it shows the underlying contempt of Christians that many on the left have.

As a Jewish voter, I don't care how correct that theology is in Christianity- if he is making a stop specifically to speak with the Jewish community, coming in on our wavelength and not sounding like he's freaking proselytizing is always nice.

I don't know much about the topic myself so can't debate you on the veracity of his jokes, but I do know that Colbert is an uber Catholic and has taught sunday school, so I'm pretty sure he's not approaching the subject from ignorance or "leftist" contempt of Christianity. So I feel like you're kind of off base here.

He was the lamb of God.... as per our tradition we as a Christian celebrate passover same way as Jews do but the difference is jesus is our lamb of God

That made sense to me. The Passover was a traditional time set aside to remember God's protection over the Jewish people. Kasich is a Christian so he is talking about how Jesus is the fulfillment of the Passover through the Perfect Lamb (a.k.a Jesus). Theologically from a Christian standpoint he is spot on. So where is the joke?

+Paul Elliot well, it's probably that he said that in the context of a campaign to a bunch of orthodox Jews. My guess would be that bringing Jesus up would be the thing you "shouldn't" do, especially in the way that he did, to get Orthodox Jews to vote for you. But yeah, theologically he was spot on. I find it humorous, but kinda feel bad for the guy

So Kasich says that Jesus is the lamb of god. Fine. Good for him. That still has nothing to do with Passover or the Divine command to the Hebrews to place lamb's blood on their doorposts and lintel. The Exodus of the Hebrews from ancient Egypt (Which is what the Passover holiday is about) was around 1300 BC. The last supper took place around 30 AD. You don't have to be a genius to figure out that there's about 1300 years between the two events. Hence Passover is not about Jesus. So what if Jesus' last meal was on Passover, he was a Jew, it happens, what's the big deal? Jesus wasn't alive when the Exodus took place. I see from the lamp-post remark that Kasich is a fan of time-travel, but it would be nice if he didn't try to send Jesus back in time. There are enough misinformed and confused people out there, without Kasich's theory of relativity.

+AdmiralNuke His comment was really out of place in the context of campaigning, but in Christian theology you see a lot of comparisons between the Passover for Jews and the Last Supper for Christians. Kasich, himself an Anglican (I think) is making reference to this train of thought. Examples: Lamb without blemish was sacrificed, blood put on wooden doorposts, Jesus called the "lamb of God," is without sin (blemish) and dies, his blood on the wood of the cross. Jews freed from slavery to Egypt, Christians freed from slavery to sin. Even the bitter herbs make an appearance in both cases, since the Gospel of John mentions that Jesus drank vinegar with hyssop, if I recall, shortly before he died. John mentions this as a way of tying the passover meal to the death of Christ. In short, he is making a claim of parallelism, not about a concurrence of historical events. The lamppost thing what quite the gaffe though.
