Thanks to citypoison for this ! DJ legend John Peel chooses his favourite ten of the best music records from the video list and explains why !! PS: Music has been edited out of the video. This was first broadcast in 1995. The tracklistings are below:

The phrase is overused to the point where it means virtually nothing any more but this man was, and is, a fucking legend. Ten years and we still miss him and it would be great to have him back.

I never missed a show for a year or two back in the seventies. I remember XTC, Ian Dury, Gang Of Four, The Slits, Loudon Wainwright 111, Captain Beefheart, The Undertones, and a whole lot of reggae. Talk about a musical education! This man was a one of a kind. I've never heard another DJ like him.

Favorite DJ, favorite music personality of all time! The fact that Teenage Kicks is his favorite record is amazing. It really is kind of a perfect song.

Everything he knew and spoke about music should be put in the National Archive and kept for posterity and future musical historians. You are missed sir and will remain the only autobiography I will ever read.

Love the way he Played a Gabber Techno Track then a Mexican Mariachi Band after he was so diverse i miss those nights of putting Peel on the Radio.

Love John peel. Listened to him from the punk days on my portable radio in my bedroom. Last time I saw him was playing in turnmills or fabric night club in the early 2000's. Forgive me for not being sure which as it was a big night out. It was so strange to see him in a dancer music club.

I saw him at Tribal Gathering, possibly around the same time, doing his usual wrong-speed and Teenage Kicks stuff - was amazing!

So pleased he mentions Dick Dale, I saw him in a small place in Cambridge, I think, there were 30 people there-maximum. Dick Dale was intense, loud and overwhelming. Great guy too, backstage he signed my ancient album cover. Oresum!

I can remember being 8 years old at the end of the 1970"s listening to John Peel (at 10pm on weeknights) on a small handheld MW/FM battery operated radio, which I had against my ear while lying in bed, and loving what I was hearing. I always slept-in in the morning for school.

I had my radio too. When I first heard the Banshees and the fall I didn't get it . The music was so stripped down. Fucking brilliant.

this guy was a legend. and so humble and decent. he wrote me a letter, where he excused my name to the english version, because they were obliged only english names of songrequesters on BFBS (British Forces Broadcasting System). Who else would have done this?

One time I was going down to London and I sent an email in during a show asking about good record shops. Didn't really expect a reply. I get email back asking for my phone number and then John puts on a 12 inch techno record and phones me during the show and precedes to tell me about all the record shops he goes to, the techno record comes to an end he excuses himself, hangs up and goes back to the show! Actually spoke to him a couple of times on the phone after that. Top guy. You could listen to him forever.

i love nearly everything you did mr John Peel. we [Db iV or Dead Babies in Vomit] is on its last week of releasing our Debut.thank you soooooo much for all the cool shit you have gotten out there man. alot of bands wouldnt exist. street punk wouldnt exist. i was on the street for twenty years. Doing 10 years in jail. the only thing that gave me joy threwout my life and has always been my best friend is punk rock. it has cradled me threw the most my hardships and gave me something to live for is punkrock,and all its many guises. on ya matey! love from Vomit.

The redskins peel sessions, The only ones stiff little fingers- the band u2 wished they could be! So many he championed of bands that are just part of me and always will be. And my beloved laurel and hardy as well what a diverse taste John Peel had

He played my surrealist poetry tape on his show, perhaps as I'm from the Wirral lol. I loved him all the way back from the 90s as a student, he was typically Northern, dry, acerbic but endearing, and he'd always play interesting music, so eclectic, you'd get thrash Japanese and then Smog, or Echo and the Bunnymen then Gene Vincent. Dick Dale is a favourite of mine, I love surf guitar. Didn't like everything he played, The Undertones, Fall, Ramones, etc but it didn't matter. I like his Wirral accent as well, I miss it so much being stuck in the South yuk.

all hail JP.... honest, but I am fairly sure some stuff was happening in the 70's.... I appreciate this is a Vox pop talking head type thing and not an exhaustive chronology of popular music, I understand that from a certain view music was waiting for punk in the 70's..... I just want to say that some utterly vital reggae, funk and electronic music was released and was of value by any means of measure - so yeah - what did John Peel ever no

I imagined he did and VH1 told him, sorry don't have it !! I think what happened more likely, is that VH1 gave him a list of what videos they've got and John Peel took the time to choose the ten out of those list.

John was always there , forgotten about for years then turned to on a boring weekday night when conventional drab music was proving to be less life affirming . I once was at an event that's called mountain bike weekend in Jim Thorpe pa and as I was reading the itinery idealized that I missed dick dale live at the campfire about 2000 yards from our campsite biggest regret I ever had
