From Jeff:
NGDB celebrated our 50th Anniversary with a concert and PBS Special, filmed at the Ryman Auditorium a few years back. John Prine was among the first of our friends we asked to join us . His response was “You betcha! “ He suggested “Grandpa Was A Carpenter”, which we’d recorded together on “Circle..” Vol.2.. I asked if we could do “Paradise” as well, and he said “Sure thing! You sing the third verse !” My face broke out in a big ‘ol goofy grin. It was a night filled with memorable reunions and highlights, but playing and singing with John Prine..
Priceless.
He was a National Treasure, but he was also a beautiful human being. Kind, funny, irreverent and always reminding us that he was “having the time of his life”. John adored his wonderful wife, Fiona and his sons, Jody, Tommy and Jack. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
Rest easy,
Handsome Johnny 💔

Two of my favorites on one stage...awesome. // Sadly, when I sing this song (which I do on a regular basis,) my friends have no idea "what I'm talking about." [John Prine is THE greatest songwriter in Folk & Rock history...with a depth of thought equaled only by Bob Dylan but with an intellectual humor rivaled only by Tom Lehrer. // Nitty Gritty is, of course, as nitty gritty as it gets...and the "circle will stay unbroken."] Thanks for the lifetime of soul-loving music, folks.

@@djsweatymix8117 That's right, he did...! // You must also--I'm sure--know about Eric Clapton's response to the reporter's question, "What's it feel like to be the greatest guitar player of all time?"..."I don't know, you'll have to ask Prince." (paraphrases)

A friend played a Prine album for me in the late '70s as a teen. It tickled my brain so much that I went to music school, studied classical guitar and jazz to its deep depths. Here I am today, listening still to my favorite songwriter and writing some songs. Dylan and Beethoven a close second. RIP old friend JP!

NGDB were some of my heroes, and I lived in bars on Friday nights and the songs I enjoyed most turned out to be John Prine songs. And now that I have to learn about life, I find that John was in my life for a long time. But I have been a non-smoker, and always thought that there should be a seperate smoking section, especially for nine mile long cigarettes. I didn't mean for John to take me seriously? But he never took anything seriously, except for writing songs.

John prine what a vital. And beautiful soul and will be remembered that he was. Highly intuitive and empathic He is one of the. Exemplar that represents not only. Excellent smooth and efficiently flowing. Quality of sound but with all that the crowning achievement of his life and time music. He represents the utmost of America and our ideals pure Americana timeless poetry Both a respected house hold name endeared to people and establishment the same. Yet was a pioneer by singing about getting high death With a decidedly irreverent cadence. But he was. An all American who absolutely. Had the ability to perceive and encapsulate the takeaway from world events and would than take that to touch on the collective feeling or mood He absolutely loves. All of you dedicated. John prine way timeless poetry

Grandpa wore his suit to dinner Nearly every day No particular reason He just dressed that way Brown necktie and a matching vest And both his wingtip shoes He built a closet on our back porch And put a penny in a burned out fuse. Chorus: Grandpa was a carpenter He built houses stores and banks Chain smoked camel cigarettes And hammered nails in planks He was level on the level And shaved even every door And voted for eisenhower 'cause lincoln won the war. Well, he used to sing me "blood on the saddle" And rock me on his knee And let me listen to radio Before we got t.v. Well, he'd drive to church on sunday And take me with him too! Stained glass in every window Hearing aids in every pew. Repeat chorus: Now my grandma was a teacher Went to school in bowling green Traded in a milking cow For a singer sewing machine She called her husband "mister" And walked real tall and pride And used to buy me comic books After grandpa died. _

Steve wrote "My Old Man," I believe. The line about his grandma going to school in Bowling Green suggests Kentucky, so if it's autobiographical, it must be John's.
