I love how the the audience in Ireland is so respectful. It's like they understand what it is like to live through many years of a struggle. Well, they have and do. Total respect to a beautiful song. The best song ever written. Love John Prine.

I was honored to meet John Prine just briefly one night in a club where he was playing. He is true gentleman. He was very nice to an 'eager fan'.

When that song came out, I was a hard-working man, with a beautiful wife, (common-law,) of course. Now, I am Sam Stone, and she died of cancer a few months ago !! We were broke up for 34 years when that happened !! I never stopped loving her all that time, and never will !! Strange, I was the one who was supposed to succeed, and I thought , SAM STONE was just a song !! GOD, Forgive me, PLEASE !!

rightpatch, though you are not asking for comment, I am sure you were a good man, just based on writing what you did, your wife loved you and was so happy, regardless of being broke - bless her and bless you sir! You did what you were supposed to do, love your wife, stay with her through thick and thin, and you should be very proud of being a great husband! I am sure she went through her cancer believing she was lucky to have you taking care of her and loving her as she did you!

I am a single Dad and my Sam Stone was my ex-wife. She is a full blown Junkie. I am sorry for your loss, but I am not sorry for you decisions. You chose the drugs over everything else. God will forgive you ... after all he is a forgiving God.

rightpatch1 My God is a forever forgiving God. If God wanted us to be perfect God would have made us perfect. We all have defects to deal with. I may forget about God and let go of his hand but, God does'nt forget about me and he never will let go of mine. I think God is that way with all human's

Being in the USN from '78-82 I was aboard a ship that was out to sea a lot. I was introduced to John Prine by a Vietnam vet who had friends die due to being addicts. This song would send him into another world. Very still & very quiet in his past. I still feel sorry for him.

+Brad Karraker Thanks for that comment, was interesting.. I can understand that this song has the power to send Vietnam vets into another dimension, a trance almost.. Hell, it can even do the same to me, and I was never in the 'nam.. Powerful lyrics.. Especially "there's a hole in Daddy's arm where all the money goes..." I'd also like to add that I think it's disgusting how the brave vets were treated when they returned to the US... They went through SERIOUS psychological torture, it's no wonder many became addicts, using heroin just to numb the severe mental anguish of what was happening in 'nam.. I'll always respect the veterans of Vietnam.. Respect pal, from Davey in Ireland :)

I don't know if you folks got the same commercial I did, but it was close to blasphemy to have a war-mongering Tea Party two-minute video disguised as a "commercial" on this poignant anti-war John Prine tune. SHAME!
