6 жыл бұрын

In this short film, Prine spends a typical afternoon driving around Nashville while talking about his journey from midwestern mailman to career songwriter. He plays an emotional version of “Summer’s End,” from The Tree of Forgiveness, his first album in 13 years, while fans including Dan Auerbach, Rosanne Cash and Todd Snider share their favorite Prine lyrics.

Singer. Songwriter. Poet. Icon.
John Prine was an artist’s artist with a list of admirers and collaborators that cut across musical genres and generations - names like Kris Kristofferson, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie Raitt, Johnny Cash, Tom Petty, Brandi Carlile, George Strait, Kurt Vile, Miranda Lambert, The Everly Brothers, Emmylou Harris, among others.
Though he was born in Maywood, Illinois, in 1946, John declared himself “pure Kentuckian” throughout his life. His parents, Willian and Verna, were natives of Paradise, Kentucky. The family would spend summers there in Muhlenberg County, where John listened to bluegrass music and studied the guitar styles of country music heroes Doc Watson and Merle Travis with his older brother, Dave.
In Maywood, he worked as a postman before being drafted into the army in 1966. It was as a postman that John began to write the songs that would connect with so many. He sang at Chicago folk clubs, where he was introduced to singer-songwriter Kris Kristopherson, who invited John to open for him in New York. It was there that Jerry Wexler, president of Atlantic Records, first heard Prine and offered him a recording contract. His self-titled debut album was released in 1971 and featured a list of songs now regarded as classics, including “Paradise,” “Angel From Montgomery,” “Illegal Smile,” Hello in There,” and “Sam Stone.” Prine received the first of his 13 Grammy nominations in 1972 for Best New Artist. He would record three more albums for Atlantic and another three with Asylum.
His profound impact on American music was amplified in 1981 when John co-founded Oh Boy Records, and independent label where he released most of his subsequent work and which gave voice and respect to so many fellow singers and songwriters.
In his distinguished career, John won four Grammys and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award (2020). He was a three-time recipient of the Artist of the Year Award at the Americana Music Honors & Awards, which also honored him with the Lifetime Achievement Award for Songwriting. He won the Pen/New England Song Lyrics of Literary Excellence Award (2016) and was enshrined in the Songwriters Hall of Fame (2019). In addition, John was named Honorary Poet Laureate of Illinois (2020).
John Prine passed away on April 7, 2020 due to complications from Covid-19. The outpouring of grief and love from his fan community was staggering. Over 500,000 viewers participated in an online memorial and tribute that raised more than half a million dollars for Covid-related community causes. In 2021, the Prine family created the Hello In There Foundation to honor John’s spirit of generosity towards those in need. Fiona Prine and her sons continue to operate and expand the reach of John’s independent record label, Oh Boy Records.

A part of me died today, Frankie. I know you and countless others probably feel that loss and sadness. I was a letter carrier for thirty years,on a foot route, and every day I looked for the opportunity to say "hello in there". John's advice was part of me and perhaps I was able to bring a smile and some comfort to some older, lonesome customer. Now I am of a certain age where I look for that person who might say "hello in there". May you rest in peace John , smoke your nine mile long cigarette and enjoy your vodka and ginger ale. You were a gift to all of us.

My husband and I along with a couple of friends went to hear John Prine in the early 70s. He was performing at the Louis Armstrong theater at Grand Valley State College. It was just him and his guitar on the stage. There were only about 200 people in the audience. From the first song---no, the first note--we knew that John Prine was extraordinary. Thank you, John.

Scott Baxendale you got that right. He wasn't in the best of health but he had more life in him and he wasn't ready to go yet. What killed him will probably be listed as pneumonia. But that's probably what is listed on all of Covid-19's victims' reports. John, like so many other victims, was vulnerable because of his age and his underlying health issues. He had COPD and he had had lung cancer and throat cancer earlier, as most people probably already know. And he had hip surgery just before this happened. I don't really care what is listed on the coroner's report. I just miss him, and I am so , so sorry for Fiona, the boys, the band and every one of his loved ones. It's hard enough to swallow just being a fan, albeit one who has loved his music for decades, and who never met him. But I can't imagine what his loved ones are going through.

You took life John, threw it into notes and chords, mixed them, added words in a way that only you could, and gave us life in all is ways and means in some of the greatest music ever listened to. I'm saddened by a loss that is being felt around the world right now. But we are selfish creatures, so we won't let you die completely, we will keep the part of you, that you yourself loved best, the singer and the songs, the sound, they beauty, alive and picking that guitar for ever. Never too late to learn about the countrymusic folklore writer and singer John Prine. Picked up the guitar again a few years back at the age of 70, just to play for fun and family. I was watching a couple of KZfaq instructors showing how to finger style play "Paradise" and "In Spite of Ourselves" by John Prine and I was hooked. I started googling everything I could find about the man, and was pleasantly surprised and pleased about everything I read about him. ❤😊

His American roots ... yes like Samuel Clemons (I read every bit I could get when I broke back and John is the next True Thing for me and For Us All). His straight plain beauty never ever misses with ... all of us. He evoked so much love with his true words. I cannot come close to imparting the joy he gave me and I have surprised and blessed others to seek ... his truth and the love he shines so uniquely and generously with all of us. Let us draw closer to each other ... when this shadow passes. And the will never dim on his Life so Well Given. Bless You John and pull through ... you know how deeply you are cared for.

It seems like lately I’ve been dropping pieces of my heart left and right but thank God or Yahweh or pudding or nothing, whatever you believe in that folks like Mr. Prine left their music behind to help us forward.

@@steveb9325 I don't think it's a great comparison, to tell the truth, except maybe they both had a good sense of humor, and a sense of the mystical.

“And if the wind blows just right you might be in my arms tonight” Heard JP for the first time whilst listening to a late night Bob Harris radio show....never looked back. When he visits the UK I always drop everything, saw Todd Snider support him at the Festival Hall once...what a night. If people don’t get JP then ten to one they have very ordinary or even shit taste in music . Sweeping statement I know but I’d sweep all those people down to Cafe Bland.

All the great ones seem to have a favorite old, beat up, cheap, acoustic guitar they’ve hauled with them on the road all over the world. I bet John still has his first old Gibson Hummingbird he bought cheap when he could barely afford it because it was badly sun-damaged from being on display so long in the front window of the local guitar shop. “Still rings like a bell.” 🧨
