My dad and I used to listen to this song all the time. He would drive me to school and play this song when we were actually driving through West Virginia he played this haha. My mother-in-law grew up deep in the hills of West Virginia, and moved to Chicago early in the 1950’s. This was her favorite song. Before she died at the age of 90, she told us to spread her ashes back home. We did just that in the family cemetery while playing this song. Each of us were singing as loud as we could with tears in our eyes. Even now the tears still come. Thank you John Denver, for recording this perfect send-off song.

あいこ前田 No. West Virginia is very hillbilly. It was settled by immigrants primarily from what is now Northern Ireland in the early 1800’s. During the late 1800’s it was exploited for its coal resources (which did not benefit the people who lived there). Today it is one of the poorest states in America. It does have some beautiful natural scenery but many of the people there are very xenophobic and skeptical of outsiders. The ex-French part of America is Louisiana which still has a “Cajun” culture (although the French language is dying in Louisiana, the culture is still very distinct there).

This was played at my Mother’s funeral. It had always been a song she loved. Conveniently, me, my dad, and my mother had a conversation about what song we wanted played at our funeral a few months prior to her passing, and this, of all things, was it.

In 2018 I was driving through West Virginia. With my Brother. We stopped in a mid sized town and got gas and groceries. The lady who was working there Sighed. I asked her what was wrong. She replied " your another tourist going through the state, And I am stuck in this hell hole." I looked at her and replied. " If this is hell. Then, I rather live in Hell then any place else. Every place you look is a picture post card. Even the tired houses and the winding roads. The People, the families. Looks, more like Heaven, then Hell. Even John wrote a song about this place." She then smiled. And said" your right, Since I always lived here. I have only known this place. I guess this is Heaven. Thank you. I am much better now".

WV is one of the poorest states in the union (followed by Mississippi, I think, or the other way around) I grew up in Appalachia when Appalachia was at its lowest. industry had closed down and the folks who had lived there for generations left. Much of it still hasn't recovered. Southern Appalachia, where I grew up, is making a comeback in terms of tourism and retirees, but everywhere north of NC in the mountains is still very poor.

My mom was born and raised on a farm in the “durty south” and mainly listened to country music. There were a few exceptions and two were: John Denver and Jim Croce. They are two of my all timer favorites. Anyway, I searched this song now I’m going to listen to “Time in.a Bottle” and think of that sweet “kuntry gal” with the baby voice. RIP Mommy ❤️
