Today we Diagnose and teardown the fully built LS VTEC engine that was in my white EG Hatchback. This engine was supposed to make 500+ horsepower, but It developed a knocking noise before it every even made it to dyno. In todays video, a local shop called Boosty Built shares their knowledge of engine building and diagnosis with us to figure out what needs to be don't to make this engine awesome again.

This guy gave you a TON of good advice. I agree with pretty much everything he said. He is a real one for sure. Not that I am an expert. I have just listened to as many experts as possible and tried to find where all of them agree or are at least come close to agreement. People who build $1,000 engines, $10,000 engines, and $50,000 engines all share a lot of key knowledge. I think you're in good hands. I also love that this guy is what ADHD looks like when it's turned into pure drive and success, hahaha. One thing I definitely agree with is the ring gapping was done very poorly. Once you got the camera to focus I grimaced. Seeing something like that makes me question all the work done. Very strange. Love that Boosty demonstrated his experience as well. Good stuff!

Even if it was just the valve lash I wouldn’t say there was a negative to tearing down the motor when you did and playing it safe. You saved the motor and everything is salvageable. Had you not done this you’d have never known the rod caps were backwards. You’ve also learned the importance of cleaning and everything properly when assembling. Everything this video talks about will be knowledge that will for sure be using later down the road and it will be fixed at a point where the motor wasn’t hurt which has potentially saved you thousands of dollars.

When I built my B16a2 earlier this year I did one cylinder at a time so I would not mix up rod caps and pistons/ring gaps. If I took everything out and installed I would have def messed something up. This was my First time doing a build and very happy and also set the valve lash per spec from skunk 2 as I have skunk2 cams. I also used assembly lube on my cams when installing into a dry head. I ended up snapping a cam holder bolt on the 2nd bolt I torqued and had to take the head off and to the machine shop to get drilled out safely without damaging the head. I used arp lube with arp head studs and rod bolts and did everything by manufacturer spec per arp. Everything when building an engine is a learning curve. I was so nervous building my own engine but did everything as careful as I could and one little change can mess up everything but shit is a learning experience for all of us builders. For me everything went well and was a successful build but this guy knows his stuff and better safe than sorry!

Long standing rule I learn from the John Morton 510 racing team back in the 70's is when installing new cams you MUST change to new rockers. Do not run new cams on old rockers. It will ear your cams up. Skunk2 sells a full set if new rockers for $471. Be smart

I gotta say I only disagree with one thing Boosty said, about building it as tight as he can. Personally, on my motors, I like em loose. There's an old saying, which I'm 100% sure he knows: "Built it loose, only you will know. Build it tight, everyone will know!" My B18c1 is at 2.8 thou mains and rods, 4 thou piston-to-wall, 23 thou top ring gap, and it only sees PennGrade1 - it's the best stuff you could ever put in your b series.

Also always good practice to remove the oil galley plugs at the front and rear of the block and wash everything out with hot soapy water and dry everything out with compressed air just be sure to dry the cylinder walls off first and spray them with WD-40 to prevent flash rusting which can ruin your freshly bored and honed cylinder walls

What was the piston to wall clearance at? You mentioned measuring it but didn't show it. Sounds a lot like piston slap, you should hear mine, it sounds like a diesel when it's cold and my ptw clearance was .0036 and will be roughly .004 when the coating wears off. Check my channel for the video of my new sleeved b16 turbo engine while cold, also check out @BillD64's video titled 'C5 Z06 Piston Slap.wmv'. Sounds exactly like what you're hearing. The fact that you didn't find anything wrong kind of confirms piston slap as well. Did you ever let the motor fully heat up (oil temp not coolant temp)?
