Thanks for putting this fight on here, this was the night of upsets in Buffalo. Good fight with a crazy ending, would have liked to see a rematch. Good to hear Bill Mazar commentating on this fight, he was one of the most knowledgeable sports people there ever was.

Legend has it Johnny Bumphus was so high in the dressing room before the fight that they were worried he wouldn’t make it to the ring and Duva was going nuts

Lmao truly the golden age of boxing the more you go back the wilder it gets, it’s kind of become “sterile” for better or worse

I remember reading in a boxing magazine Gene Hatcher's manager said "how was Bumpus supposed to fight?Crawling around on his hands and knees?"
@phelpsmarc3 жыл бұрын
Hatcher was tough with high work rate endless stamina and granite chin. He simply outlasted the fragile Bumphus.

Granite chin? So you never saw the Honeyghan fight?

I do think it was a good thing that the fight was stopped. Bumphus was badly hurt and there was still 30 seconds left. I don’t think he would have survived the rest of the round. The referee didn’t do the best job after the knockdown but he did the right thing in stopping it.

Lou Duva was upset, but Bumphus's legs were gone.

Bumphus had control of the fight but he got careless at the end. I thought the stoppage was justified since Bumphus was out of it. Usually, when fighters fall face first, they're done. Great fight, and I wish they had a rematch.

Great job by Hatcher here. "Bump City" was labeled as a Super Talent early in his career. Man, his leg was really twitching during the knockdown. I remember years ago hearing Duva talking about how Bumphus, during his last fight, could barely walk up to the ring due to drugs and his health. Duva said he figured he could get Bumphus one last big payday, because he needed it.

No disrespect but the sheer work rate of Bumphus in this fight is like that of some coked out people I’ve seen. Not sure if he was for this fight but impressive, Hatcher with some great boxing in there as well with that classic brawler style that is just so entertaining. Bumphus out-boxing, moving around the ring like an absolute maniac too just made for a great fight

Duva has been around boxing forever so to say bumphus wasn't hurt is a joke.

Bumphus behavior was a DISGRACE! He deserved to lose because he behaved unworthy of a champion.
