Narcissistic people have a distorted view of reality and the opinions/motivations of other people but they are also very good at maintaining the appearance of that narrative. This is about Defamation. So started out with, did she write the article, yes proven, Okay was the article true? After multiple pictures of 24 hours of superior mutant recovery never seen on this world, and no medical records or police reports about physical assault, Can say article is not true. Okay then, at this point they are trying to say it wasn't the article that didn't get him work. It's going to be seen as indeed after 30 years in the business and publicized personal life that it all stopped because of.... her article. Depends on what Johnny will do after the trial. He told Amber in a recording that he didn't want this to be public and for them to separate quietly and peacefully, but she basically said she won't stop, so he told her they'll be seeing each other in court. He doesn't want to throw Amber in jail, but I'm sure he doesn't mind it one bit if she pays a hefty fine for perjury.

You're so right it's the build-up - the way the lawyer initially lets the expert focus on the scientific nature of the findings, to then move slowly to the climax-punch-line. It's beautifully scripted! And the way the lawyer keeps a straight face is also amazing.
