This video talks about how I got into the E-bike industry and where I want to go in the industry. If you take a shot every time I say "awesome" you will black out before the video ends.
Long story short: nepotism. My father was an e-bike builder, his father was an E-bike builder and so was his father from the old country. :)

You're like a brother from another mother. So much of your story resonates, including getting into researching e-bikes in 2015. I bypassed hubs and went right for a BBSHD on my old Cannondale in 2016. Did one more build for myself since. A BBS02 for a street legal "class 1" e-bike for city transportation. My friends think I'm nuts that I'd rather ride than drive for local stuff...not understanding that it takes me less time to travel, no time looking for parking, I'm not drinking dinosaur juice and I feel better from flowing endorphins than from driving in NYC traffic;) Love your channel, enthusiasm and willingness to teach what you've learned.

I'm glad to have caught your channel through your video about what ebike manufacturers don't want you to know. I can't resist watching any of your videos since. Also, the first one I caught, helps me understand why you weren't comfortable working for manufacturers. You took a little leap of faith and succeeded. Congratulations and thanks for the content you produce.

Dude, I live down here in St. George and now you've got me thinking to start building e-bikes like you! Probably won't happen, but kudos to you for following your dreams. I moved to Ivins just to mountain bike! Just rented/rode an ebike for the first time a week ago, had such a good time I bought a BBS02 from Amazon, watched a ton of videos about them....and of course came across a bunch of your videos/builds/tutorials. Thanks! Congratulations on everything. I'm subscribing.

I love the honesty you put into making this video and I watched your video on E-bike manufacturers and believe me I don't buy nothing from china unless I find out if a local shop can repair it first because I bought an E-scooter a couple of years ago from voromotors and had to figure out how to fix it myself using their videos here on youtube, since there was nobody willing to touch it since it wasn't a gas scooter.

so was thinking about it, than decided to do it after watching your vids, put a defang hd on an old dimond back, aluminum, disk brake, I live around champoeg park, (you might know where that is) turned on fargo road that had just been repaved, put the pedal assist to 9 (changed from five settings) hit the throttle.......32 miles per hour later!!! Yeah its life changing for a 72 year old guy. live around the park use to ride a recumbent, quit because of my age but back in the saddle again, well the recumbent had a seat but why quibble.

A friend and I where some of the first to convert bikes to e-bikes here in Norway. Many called it cheating. The rules here in Europe are stupid, but we did not care. Sadly, my friend passed away this week. I feel that we started something new, when everybody want to try our strange new bikes.People in Norway have often money to buy expensive ready made. But the movement are going forward: Problems now are shipping and hard to find parts and tools.

Congrats Johnny! I think you have done a kick-ass job and so much more to come! My personal opinion is far as e-bikes custom builds and mid-drive motors, I would like to see more choices. We have the BBSHD, CYC Motor, Cyclone and Hot Rods motors brands so far. It would be nice to see another American manufacturer offer a low-cost high performance mid-drive that's readily available and fairly easy to install. Perhaps using brushless motor technology to minimize weight and maximize efficiency. That's me nerding out on motors for a while! Haha

Michael nailed it with “like a brother from another mother”. You are so personable! I have really enjoyed you helping me get my ebike conversion on the road. My 76 year old legs are loving the cranking. Your build has been the best! I have been working on the patent drawings for the folding and telescoping “Road Abode” caravan camper. Soon a Provisional Patent Application will get me a patent pending status while I peruse the market seeking to license my asset. Just not sure if it should be bike trailer manufacturers or producers of adventure type ebikes looking to expand their accessory products. The 180W Solar Panel option will be a big draw for being off grid while touring the backcountry. What do you think dear “brother”? Camo painting is taking time, but soon I’ll bring it by for your inspection and testing. Great video today. So glad you have been so willing to share yourself with us avid fans.

Johnny, I hope you develop an ebike specific frame that we can mount a Bafang Ultra motor to. Love the BBSHD but believe the Ultra mounting scheme is next level. When you develop it...a suggestion would be NO integrated battery so we can run different size batteries. Something like Andy Kirby sells out of the UK...but a bit more room in the frame for different battery sizes. Good luck! P.S. I am hoping for more ebike specific frames in the future that don't take a proprietary battery. I believe the market is there for performance ebike hobbists who don't want a store bought low power ebike with integrated battery aka money grab for low performance riders who don't know any better. I know you understand. A Bafang Ultra motor can be seriously hotrodded with big battery and high power controller and coupled with the right frame would make a heck of an ebike...next level over converted BBSHD regular bikes.
@JohnnyNerdOut
@JohnnyNerdOut 2 жыл бұрын
Definitely wont be proprietary batteries. ultra isnt a bad idea, although a standard bottom bracket is more flexible to give more motor options like cyclones, bafangs and CYC's. Ours will be made in USA, not white labeled.

Johnny great video I am happy you seem to have found your place. I too have decided MidDrive is the way to go. I have a Himiway All Terrain that I can't say enough good about. But, I am actually considering re-lacing the rear wheel eliminating the hub motor and converting the bike to a Mid Drive. I know that may sound crazy but I really like the design and build quality of the Himiway overall and it has a great battery 48v 17.5Ah Samsung 35E cells. At this point I am considering only the Bafang 1000w motor kit as I believe it represents the best value and has tons of aftermarket support. I figure I can sell the Himiway motor, controller and display to re-coop part of the expense of doing the conversion.

So now, I assume your NEW wife is the one with the Benno. But also gotta go with Crackpot on the moped thing. It may be a fast electric bike but to me, NOT a Moped. Mopeds have pedals yes,but they also have suspension ,stronger brakes & wheels like mini motorcycles. I’m 65 so I have had my share of all U discussed . I wish U LUCK and great success but check out Moped Army or vintage mopeds for more real comparisons.😃🤙🏼

The problem with converting automobiles is that it promotes the one person, one ton transportation problem bankrupting our country (did you know that no state even covers theorbadmknistrative costs with all thier taxes, lisc.'s and fees?... forget about infrastructure). Love how people cruise along, by thrmselves, on socialized streets, complaining about socialism, busses and trains that are half empty. Let me know if you want any info in bike fit, geometry or materials.

I definitely agree with you once again Mark! Ideally, people will be converting their family cars instead of sending it to the trash heap. And even after converting it, using it only when weather is prohibitive to ride their e-bike....One day we will live in a Utopia where people get it!
