No.108 Today's DIY is replacing the Pressure Gauge in my pool sand filter and cleaning out the Sight Glass.
Very easy to do.

Great video, thanks! - Teflon tape application: Counterclockwise if holding gauge in right hand, but if held in right had, wrap Teflon clockwise. 🙂👍🏻

Just installed this exact guage on my hayward filter, it is very loose. Make sure to use a decent amount of tape or it will leak or suck air. Replaced because old one was yellowing but turns out old one was also off by 2 psi. Pool is back at 13 psi where it normally is. If your pump is below the water level of your pool like an aboveground you will get water rushing through the hole when you unscrew the old guage so close your valves before unscrewing.

Good video. Some new pool owners need to know a few of the pre steps to do this. Do you plug up the openings at the pool first? Does it matter what the filter is set to? Those are the sort of people watching a video such as this. I have to change mine out this week so nice to see it done. Thank you.

Great questions. I didn't have to plug the opening jet holes, if that's what you mean. And it doesn't matter what the filter setting was.

Great job in explaining the switch out process I have a new Hayward sand filter / pump system, The site glass came crooked and when started up with backwash it shot water out like crazy. So question can't seem to get it to unscrew like shown and don't want to break it being new and under warranty could it break off at treads if we were to try and force it out? And do you think it even has the gasket in it since it shoots water out? Thank you so much

Good question. I'm not sure about the gasket maybe they screwed it too tight. Give the Pool place a call before you try to take it off. The pressure gauge is not expensive but you could cross thread it.

Thank you so much for this video. I had seen a different video and was hesitant to try this because it said to bleed off the pressure first. But that was a DE filter, so I'm glad I didn't have to worry about that. Everything with replacing the gauge seemed to go smoothly. I do have a question about refilling the basket with water. I put the hose on it for quite some time and the water level never got above about half full, at the level where the other pipe feeds into it. Is this normal? I went ahead and put it back together without filling the water to near the top. It seems to be running fine.

If you mean the pump basket, it should be ok as long as there is no more bubbles appearing, when the pump is running.

Thanks for the video, it is very helpful. As a new pool owner, I need all the help I can get. My gauge is being pretty stubborn and won't unscrew. I did spray some liquid wrench to see if that would help. Any other suggestions?

Good question. Let the liquid wrench soak over night and try again the next day. Let me know if it works for you. Or if any other ideas that may work to help out our viewers with the same problem.

great video, thank you. Looks like you left your Hayward multiport in the Filter position, is that right? I just didn't know if you need to place it in Closed position in order to replace the pressure gage on a functioning pool.

That is correct Kevin. I've always left it in filter position. I've had no issues with it is far and I've changed it a few times in the last 20 years.

You can try without the teflon. It may not leak. If it does, just put the teflon on.

Do I need to close the valves for the skimmer and water line before releasing pressure?

Once you shut off the power to the pump, there's no more pressure. But it doesn't hurt to close the valves.

I turned off pump and clorinator when doing this and water came out of the hole what did I do wrong? Now I hear a strange noise. Is it air? How can I get rid of it?

It sounds like air. Try turning off your pump. Open up your pump & fill it with water. Turn on the pump & wait until there's no more noise. Good luck.

My sand filter is below ground. I’ve turned of the pump and water inlet. A lot of water is pouring out. Should I just let is pour out in a bucket and install the new gauge once the water is out? (And then open the inlet to fill the sand filter with water).

I would just turn off the pump and unscrew the old gauge. If water drains out, it let drain the install the new gauge. I didn't have to move the inlet valves.

Just bought a new house and the gauge is reading 45 and 30 when the pump is off. Think it’s time for a replacement!

Whenever i get done cleaning that filter where it says “fill with water before starting” i fill it with a hose but it never fills up and stays full like yours it keeps draining through the whole inside

Try filling it as much as you can. Maybe your drain lines empty out too quickly and takes a long time to fill. But fill it as much as you can close to full.

My gauge broke off and left part of the screw inside. I can't screw the new one in. How do I get the broken part out? I just plugged it for now because water pours out of the hole even with pump off

Sorry for the late response Chris. I would take a small screw driver to wedge in and carefully turn counter clockwise to unscrew it. That gives me a good idea for a DIY. Hopefully it works out for you.

I wouldn't suggest plugging. It's always good to know the pressure, so you don't damage your pump.

If your arrow goes straight to 30 ( aka STUCK BY PSI ) what do you do

If it's high as 30, I usually backwash the sand filter since there maybe a lot of debris in the filter.

Yes you can carefully spin it off. Be careful not to break it as the post may get stuck inside.

Hi! How can you tell if your pool has a leak?

Put a tape at the level of your water line & leave it for 2-3 days. You will see the difference in water lose. If it's only 2-3 mm it's probably evaporation. If it's close or more that an 1'' then most likely an leak.
