Жыл бұрын

This week, Marcus Luttrell and former U.S. Air Force PJ and combat rescue officer, Jonathan Harmon, pick up where they left off in their last episode, bringing to the table a deep dive discussion regarding the details of how Jonathan was able to reasonably calculate Marcus’ direction and future location during the Operation Red Wings series of events in Afghanistan in June, 2005. Many details of that op are included in today’s discussion. It has now been 18 years since Operation Red Wings occurred.
Listen in as Jonathan & Marcus discuss the details of the efforts it took to bring Marcus home as the lone survivor of that operation.
In this episode you will hear:
• He [Matt Axelson] had made it close to a village and ended up being shot and killed. And then a villager took his body even further away and buried it. (4:27)• The best record we have [of Operation Red Wings] is from Marcus’ memory. (5:24)
• I think the American public would find it completely fascinating to learn what efforts our government will go to, to bring their people home. (10:24)
• What if you had the ability - and we knew there was a television close by - and you’re being held in a foreign country. It [a discrete message] could be so much as just a message on the television as simple as a small American flag on the screen. (11:55)
• If you can think of the worst day of your entire life, and how despondent you can be - that’s every day in captivity. (13:17)
• He [Marcus’ primary target] - disappeared through an air strike. (18:31)
• So I hand my map off, [and proceeds to list his specific findings] and predict where they would end up, and I’m told: “We’re going to Afghanistan.” (23:36)
• The two [sources of information - the Army’s findings and Jonathan’s findings] validated one another. So we had a location and we had confirmation. (28:07)
• For those that don’t know, we stripped that aircraft down. We took nothing that wasn’t necessary. (30:00)
• I like to call it a recovery - not of remains - but of a person because rescue would imply that we are rescuing you from our friendly forces. That’s not necessarily the case. (30:58)
• I think the first thing [that should happen to Marcus after his recovery] is that and he needed to get a full blown medical evaluation. (33:27)
• Doc Dickens will convince you that you are superman. You’re the fullest expression of yourself. (38:32)
• If there was a father figure for all of us - it was him [Doc Dickens]. (40:29)
• One has to consider the gravity of the circumstances [of Operation Red Wings]. The single most loss of life in the history of the United States Navy SEALS just happened. (42:27)
• To be given the clothing of the village elder is a personification of being him himself. (51:10)
• [Jonathan telling Marcus] Your adherence to your faith in captivity was unique among all stories I’ve ever heard. (51:48)
• If you pull the John Wayne act [while in enemy captivity], you’re gonna get tortured and killed. (53:52)
• He [Marcus] rewrote singlehandedly a lot of our resistance posture training because we were fighting a different kind of enemy that we didn’t write manuals for. (56:10)
• [Marcus] They would laugh at me because I would fall down, and I just kept trying. I would fail all the time. I can’t believe they kept me. (60:19)
• [Jonathan to Marcus] I have a question to ask you and I want you to think about this. Do you want to continue to operate? Or do you want to be a hero? And he thinks about it and says, “Fuck, man. I wanna operate.” (71:58)
• We learned early on that asking permission wasn’t gonna work. The very first thing I learned from the SEALS - beg for forgiveness. (87:55

Semper Fi to the Marines from operation RedWings when I heard a PJ and Marcus say that we don’t care if they’re good or bad we are going to go get them that made my heart skip a beat because that means everything I sacrificed was worth it.

I have never left a comment online but couldn't resist. The intelligence, professionalism and quality of each person who helped Marcus during Operation Red Wing is unfathomable. I for one am amazed by these people and so happy to know we have these people in our military and that they were in the right positions at the right time to help.

I forget the exact quote, but it goes something like: "We sleep safely in our beds, because there are Hard Men out there in the dark watching over us as we sleep" Or words to that effect. 53 years ago, when I was 20 the Draft was in Full Effect, so I had no choice. I either Joined or would be Drafted, and at that time, everybody(or Almost Everybody) who waited to be Drafted was sent to either The Army(Then Into The Jungle Chasing Charlie), or The Marine Corps(Then Into the Jungle Chasing Charlie). I didn't have a Bone To Pick With Charlie, so I joined Uncle Sugar's Navy. A great many Draftees were Angry about being forced into Military Service, and Lots More, weren't exactly "The Cream Of The Crop", and Neither wanted anything to do with Military Service or Fighting in the jungles of Vietnam. Both affected the Combat Readiness & that got a lot of people Killed. Today, our Military Personnel are All Volunteers, who Want To Serve, for one reason or another, and that Adds A Whole Lot To Our Readiness and Effectiveness as a Fighting Force

@dwightcurrie8316
@dwightcurrie8316 9 ай бұрын
Others involved, telling their Stories, certainly "Fleshes Out" the whole Ordeal. Marcus went through a Horrendous Ordeal that would have killed most normal Men, but the Men involved in the Rescue went through their own Hellish Ordeal, and that sacrifice is More Than Worthy of being told, and appreciated. I hope that the men who went in to get Marcus Out and those who Deployed to the "Red Wing" Crash Site Horror. "Everybody involved was a Hero" is often a trite attempt at "Lofty Rhetoric" often by those who have never heard a single "Shot Fired In Anger" talking about people who haven't Been Down Range either, but in this case, I'd say both these situations would be a Fair Assessment, and Description of All Those Involved. After all, when the announcement was made that they needed "Volunteers" to go look for Marcus & his Teammates, everybody within hearing distance Stepped Up And asked, "When Do We Leave?", nothing else. That's the Caliber of the Men our Military can and often does create, who will Stand Up On Their Hind Legs and Head Out Towards(Never Away From) the sound of Gunfire, Eager to Join The Fight. At 73+(My War was over a Half Century Ago) I am continually Amazed by the Men of my Youth, and that Amazement continues, even though what Currently passes for Military Leadership seems determined to Destroy Our Military as an Effective Fighting Force. I Pray those of that Sorry Ilk will Never Succeed

So in vietnam. The CCN SOG SR Teams that went into Laos & Cambodia they had a 100% casualty rate! So I always tell everyone. Small 4-6 man recon teams that get compromised you can expect a 100% casualty rate. So everyone needs to understand with redwings the 4 man SR Team getting ambushed. It’s 100% normal and expected. The only surprise is Marcus was able to survive. For example. There’s still over 100 guys in Laos or Cambodia that are still MISSING IN ACTION. That were never recovered. -- so the mission was not a failure technically. The purpose of a SR team is go find the enemy. That may include getting overran and killed. It’s something that people gotta understand and expect. So many speak of redwings as if they are surprised at the outcome. When it literally played out exactly like vietnam era CCN MacVSog recon operations. -- when your outnumbered, your outnumbered. Superior Training means nothing in a real gunfight.

@joshhollar2223 no its not. Do some research. Nobody. And i mean nobody believes his account. There is even interviews with the rangers who found him and the bodies. Gulab has also called him a liar.

omg, the wife has no discipline. I would have liked to hear the doctor talk about rewriting the book on being a hostage vs being a POW. Instead, Melanie interrupts again. Duct tape her if you gotta.

This podcast would be so much better without his wife CONSTANTLY just “MMHMM. MHMMM. MMHMM.” After every single sentence the guest says… jeez.

Hey I wasn’t clear if Marcus’ wife was following along with what he was saying in the first 10 minutes, could you have her “mmhmmm” a couple hundred more times. Holy shit.

Ask how many mags Marcus had when rescued. I've read he had full kit and am curious if that's true. I'd think that's a ridiculous statement but you never know.
