Jonathan Roy....you are a true musical genius. I haven't come across an artist that hits like you do. Not to mention you sing about things we are all going through. That dirty, dark secret of addiction that no one wants to talk about. Well you're talking about it. You're bringing attention to a terrible epidemic. I applaud you. I played this song for my group yesterday (as we are all in recovery). Feels like this is detox anthem. You make it feel ok to struggle. You make it feel ok to be in recovery. My take is this. This song talks about the struggle with alcohol problems and how hard it is. Love the part where the song said "I'm fighting my demons in the dark", the fight for most people with alcohol addiction is daily. A lot of times they keep it a secret and try to hide it "with another good excuse" and maybe to "fill this emptiness inside". Is a very hard, let me say that again very hard to win this fight that's why he is "barley hanging on". We need to learn to express our self and let others to help us. Alcohol addiction and any other form of addiction, drains a big part of our lives, they are coping mechanism that means that we can learn how to change them. This song talks about it beautiful. I great part of the song is at the minute 3:25 when the violin gets intense, that represents the back and forward fight of the addiction and how desperate we can fill. Thanks Jonathan Roy for this amazing song, i know it will touch the heart of thousands of people even more i hope millions.

There is a lot I could say analytically about the lyrical content, but I'd rather first focus on the power of the raw emotion of the vocal performance that pours out of this song. This is where Jonathan excels, and really demonstrates controlled aggression in the extreme engagements. Done badly you can really hurt your voice doing this but listening to this everything is in balance and deliberate, so I think he's not going any place that isn't measured and so is unharmful. 'Lost' is a more universal song in that the content feels easier to palate, in a genuine desire from the narrator to help someone else, whereas here the narrator is struggling with a darkness that can destroy others, and drag them down into their abyss with them, and the song is that cry for help which, should you ever hear it, you should be wary to respond to. People in this position often need - obviously - professional help - and the narrator is talking about getting that help. But who hasn't heard these voices, and responded, with compassion, empathy and an attempt to be there and heal another? At least the narrator knows and acknowledges the nature of this 'void-filling' - this attempt to prop yourself up by using someone else. 'I would have used in the wrong times' is as close to that admission and self realisation as the storyteller gets, without realising using other people in any times is inherently self serving and a problem. The voice of addiction, the abusiveness that can come from that, of others and the self, bleeds out of this song like the suppurating nature of the soul wounds it attempts to convey. By the end you are left blowing out a breath you didn't know you'd held, and hoping the storyteller gets through those 21 days and beyond. Top storytelling you hope isn't too autobiographical, if painful to listen to on an emotional level.
