One of my favorite Jonathan Young covers ever.

The way Jonathan screams "GIVE ME SANCTUARY!!!" at the end always makes me picture Frollo screaming those words while he burns in eternal fire in the 6th circle of Hell for his sins of Heresy.

This song is amazing!! I love Jonathan Young.

You raise an interesting question, as to whether the song is an indictment of religion. I do see it as an indictment, not of religion, but of _false religionists,_ with Frollo's arrogance on full display, fancying himself as more righteous than the crowd, and in the next breath praying for the object of his lust to either be cast into Hell for a witch simply for the 'sin' of unwittingly turning his head, or for her to be 'given' to him (no doubt, to 'know her' in the Biblical sense). He blames Esmeralda, the devil, and even God for putting him in this predicament. Then he threatens to burn down the city, killing thousands, enraged that she may have gotten away, nullifying his power over her -- power he only has by virtue of his high office, which he is all too ready to twist and pervert to this sinful pursuit. So, I would argue that not all those in such positions of power indulge in Frollo's brand of evil, and the Bible does speak of religion that is pure and undefiled -- in spite of the Frollos of the world. And in fact, the lesson of _Hellfire_ is not simply directed at those in positions of religious leadership, but against ALL sinners. Jonathan portrays the corrosive effects of sin perfectly, from his very theatrical portrayal of Frollo's struggle, to that 'metal' and animal-like roar, to his screaming for Mary to grant him sanctuary, to that final tear rolling down his quivering, spoiled, entitled, grimacing facial expression. With all these tools in his toolkit, Jonathan masterfully shows us a frightening picture of what yielding to sin can turn any of us into. I gotta say, I like it better than the original. It captures a wildness in the corrupt old official missing from the G-rated, sanitized Disney original, that stands as a cautionary warning to all of us. It's some of Jonathan's best work.

I know I'm late to this party, but you should really check out his original music. He's an incredible writer, singer, and musician.
