I've ALLOWED a Story to change over time. And when Asked if it was True, I would say " It's THEIR Lie...Let them tell it the way they want". In two years time, a Knife disarming technique on ONE guy in ONE state changed to...Me being Attacked, in a Dark alley by TWO people with KNIVES ( plural ) and I KILLED both, in a place TWO States away. Gossip should be permitted ONLY by those whom receive a License to do so, with a Surety Bond and Various OTHER Insurances to cover THIER medical expenses. Are YOU listening ?... LADIES ?

If you can respond effectively to an attack and disarm your foes, you are strong; but if you can get them to give up the fight and align themselves all the way behind you, you are stronger still. Making a friend out of an enemy: that's victory pushed to its limit.

The Roman would slap a subordinate or someone of lesser status (slaves) with an open hand. Someone of equal status would be struck with the back of the hand. So if you are treated with contempt, turn the other check and force them to treat you as an equal

I was a weedy nerd when I was 14-15 years old. So was my best friend. One day in woodwork class a guy a year younger than us and built like a tank started giving my friend grief. I walked over and told this guy to pick on someone his own size. And he punched me in the arm and gave me a dead arm. He didn't know it but I couldn't even move my arm. I didn't flinch, I looked him dead in the eye and asked him if that was his best shot. He said nothing and walked away in a huff. I remember it to this day. I was so surprised by the whole thing, and especially his reaction.

It represents defiance. there are multiple factors just in that small passage. One easy one is we are not to react in the flesh to someone who is PERSECUTING you(not about self defense or defending another). Not to retaliate violence for violence. We have to ask ourselves, why are we doing it? for our own pride/self? A big factor we don't understand is the term "right" cheek. There is a reason for that. Yahshua lived in a right handed world where left hands were reserved only for unclean tasks. Therefore, one can assume that the person doing the hitting would have used their right hand. The only way to strike someone on the right cheek with the right hand is a backhanded slap. Such a blow connotes an insult, not a fistfight, and was a normal way to reprimand someone over whom you had power(masters to slaves, husbands to wives, Romans to Jews). To strike your equal in such a manner was socially and legally unacceptable, carrying with a huge fine. Understanding this Yahshua was speaking in, picture the scenario to them as the oppressor. You, A wealthy man of power backhands or reprimands your slave you expect the slave to cower, submit, slink away. Instead, your slave "defiantly" turns their other cheek and challenges you to hit them again. What do you do as the wealthy man? Most likely you would give your slave another backhanded slap to show them their place, but, to do that you would have to use your left hand which would admit that your action is unclean. You could hit them on thier left cheek, instead, but it would be embarrassing to hit your slave the way you should hit your equal. What do they do with a defiant ' slave like that then? Well, you could order them to be flogged, but, the slave has made their point. They have shown you that they are a human being with dignity and worth. You don't own them, you cannot control them, and they do not submit to your rule. Yahshua's instruction not to resist evil and to turn the other cheek transforms from an instruction to accept injustice into a challenge to resist systems of domination and oppression without the use of violence. Rather than ignoring evil and hoping it will just go away, Yahshua is telling His followers to find creative, ACTIVE, and nonviolent ways to assert their humanity and God's love . In Acts 23:3 Paul warned his abuser of judgment and retribution Yahshua rebukes the guard who struck Him How can it be right to just turn the other cheek with passive indifference when the sacred is traded for sacrilege? When truth is traded for lies? When beauty is traded for perversion? When open handed charity is traded for the heavy hand of the state? When Christs Bride, is being assaulted? We are to defend the vulnerable, resisting wickedness ourselves when doing so. Exodus 22:2,3 If the thief is caught while breaking in, and is struck so that he dies, there will be no bloodguiltiness on his account. But if the sun has risen on him, there will be bloodguiltiness on his account. Yahweh's law clearly provides for self defense, our Savior was also, Mat24:43 and Luke 11:21. The better armed we are, the less likely someone will steal from us or harm us or our families. Yahshua commanded His disciples to purchase weapons: luke 22:36 Each of us has a natural right from God to defend his person, his liberty and his property. These are 3 basic requirements of life, 1 Tim 5:8 so after providing for his family's spiritual safety, A Christian man's next priority should be providing for his family's physical protection. Food, clothing, and shelter are of little benefit if you are unprepared or unwilling to defend your family against thieves, rapists, and murderers. It is not unchristian to practice self-defense- it is unchristian if you do NOT. excerpt from Bible Law vs the United States Constitution, Ted R. Weiland pg 50. It is imperative we understand the authority to arm ourselves comes from Yahweh Himself. BC of the church we have allowed ourselves to become passive and spineless, teaching us lies on Romans 13 about submitting to the gov't. Yahweh's law reigns supreme, we gave it up for the tyranny of the state, the Constitution, sadly If you would like to know more, there are many questions answered at www.bibleversusconstitution.org/tapelist.html#T1006

If you attack someone even with truth (because you are hurt you attack), rarely will they respond with openness, most people will become defensive and you will never be understood. If you can turn the other cheek, you demonstrate a truce, and the other person can let their guard down and listen. I struggle with this severely. Most of my relationships end in conflict because I'm too accusatory, I approach it seeking victory and an admission of guilt more than I approaching it willing to reconcile or forgive.

The turning the other cheek it's funny I was thinking about this pretty much last week end it's more about having patience watching things play through what they are but actually not being affected by if you really still affected by something then you're not doing it correctly you not you have to really dig deep down to who you want and see it for what is and this usually points out what's wrong with the other person and how you can learn from that and not be affected by that a really not affected not just saying you're not affected not just saying you're not bothered not just saying that actually not being affected being able to see the overall picture without being upset everything is just words everyone has their own opinion of everything and they should we're too emotional and we can handle things that are different from us and we have to learn how to I myself I've been bothered by this for years feeling that if I can agree with someone that I can't even be around them and that's not so we are all completely and entirely different there's also something that I was thinking about reference to the underworld in the case of Gilgamesh and enkidu to stay on your horse of what you need to do he was told to never turn around and that she would be there after he fought in hell the she represents what the person loves in this scenario the thing we love the most we must let go and he was told Nat turn around when leaving and that she would be there back from the underworld but he couldn't he couldn't resist and he had to turn around before you left and it ruined everything that he fought for I think that's the greatest example of turn the other cheek is that you up to stay steadfast in your illusion in understanding of your existence and no matter what happens you don't turn around that's the ultimate turning of the other cheek and that's the whole point that translates 2 having things happen naturally without interpreting or being affected by allowing it to organically unravel that's another example of it

I'm a big fan of Jordan Peterson and I like what he says here. However, this isn't what turning the other cheek means. It is an act of defiance. It was customary in Roman times to backhand an inferior. By turning the other cheek you keep it from happening again. Instead the person would have to hit the other cheek that is exposed with their fist which is a sign of equality. If they were to strike again it would have to be done as one fights an equal.

Walter Wink’s interpretation of turn the other cheek seems the best to me, look it up! I believe the original specifies “if someone hits your right cheek turn to them your left cheek also.” Which is because servants would be backhanded with the master’s right hand. Turning your left cheek would force them to hit you with the palm of their hand, or back of their left hand, seeing you as an equal as opposed to being treated as less than human, which was shown by a backhand from the right hand. (The left hand was considered unclean, and gesturing with it would exclude you from certain meetings.) I believe Wink has interpretations for going the extra mile and giving away one’s cloak when getting sued, as well... Roman soldiers could force civilians to carry their packs one mile, but any further and the soldier would get in trouble. Soldiers would often abuse this power when unnecessary so by carrying their pack an extra mile they would be in danger of getting in trouble. And of someone sues you for your tunic let them have your cloak too... If someone was suing you for your tunic they are trying to take literally everything from you. So giving them your cloak as well would leave you naked. In their culture shame was on the person viewing the nudity, not on the nude themself, so these are all kinda examples of “be careful what you wish for,” with variants, but you get the idea. Forgive my details as I read this years ago, but definitely look it up! EDIT: www.cpt.org/files/BN%20-%20Jesus%27%20Third%20Way.pdf

Thank you for this article on the Third Way by Walter Wink. Seen too much of the 'respectable' hierarchical church pushing witchcraft during service then using triangulation when you remind them what Deuteronomy and Revelation states about sorcery. They persecute, betray and steal from the fatherless, the oppressed and the spiritual widow: i.e. abusive controlling husbands forcing Godly wives to leave rather than said husband being enabled to abuse their child or them - but the targeted wife chosen for her vulnerability and meekness is vilified and outcast despite innocence. Abusive husbands are spiritually dead in the eyes of Jesus - dead man walking, plucked up at the roots seeking the praise of men, he who does not have the Son has never known the Father and there is no life in him. Yet the world hears and exalts them because they are of the world, they are of their father the d@vil who was a liar from the beginning. Still time to repent, everything that is hidden WILL be revealed. When you perceive not knowledge in them, depart from such a person. No contact. You don't leave a good man, nor a good vicar who was supposedly 'helping' you end of. Forgiven by the way, greatest lesson ever. Please turn, seek truth and escape fiery condemnation, Jesus loves you. God bless.

There’s an amazing scene in the Miyazaki film, Princess Mononoke, where San angrily stabs Ashitaka in the chest with the dagger he had given her. And... And he’s strong enough to take it. It is unfair. He doesn’t deserve what she inflicts on him. But her feelings are overwhelming and he’s willing to live through that pain without seeking revenge or even justice. And she realizes how unjust she has been as soon as the blade hits him. How much pain she can cause when she’s in pain. To be struck on the left cheek infers that you have received a backhanded slap which is more presented as an insult not an assault by ancient standard so it was intended to provoke what would have been considered to be an overreaction from the receiver which would then place him in the moral and legal lowground. I.E. the term backhanded infers disrespect. So the point is when you turn the other cheek, the right cheek, you are presenting yourself as being willing to engage in mortal combat since that would clearly be an assault and you would be justified to defend yourself. So turn the other cheek means "your insult is meaningless but if you are prepared to die then bring it because I intend to send you to your final destination"

I've always seen this as being a stance of strength rather than a sign of weakness. After spending many years training and teaching martial arts I came to realize that breaking bodies in retaliation only increases the chance of cyclical and increased retaliation until one side or the other is dead or completely incapable of further retaliation. In terms of what Jesus taught it is simply, to me, a sign that you value love and God more than you relish victory. Unfortunately, Hollywood (movie industry in general) has glorified the hero retaliation scenario and that alone has created a bunch of Bruce Lee/Chuck Norris/Die Hard wannabees that are typically more likely to hurt themselves than achieve their goal.

I love your statement about love and God...I'm not a martial arts guy in the sense of trained in it but I love the idea of being prepared for battle. Getting slapped in the face for real or not takes alot of self control not to retaliate. And perhaps that is more powerful and forceful than the slap itself. Not to mention the other kinds of abuse won can tolerate from others from day to day. Love is a powerful weapon for good...and God definitely demonstrated that powerfully for His enemies. That is how my life changed...but sometimes I forget the message...thanks for the reminder. Shalom

If you attack someone and dont kill them, they are likely going to want revenge. The moral of the story is control your temper and dont be a fuckin meathead...

I think being unaffected emotional is important energy wise to feed negitve energy and intention if unaffected one can harness this giving you more and more tool for preparation for the self. Understanding the illusion without hesitation constant struggle with our own fears and supperstions thr best way to understand is only use patience in their approuch . Most organic is to live in the now and let things go . We are one another so peace is the only true way. Understanding and to question even the things weve belived our whole lives . Turning the other cheek is not looking back its moving to a higher less primordial level of interaction and action . To accept pain or dissonance in ones own harmony but are able to channel what ever it not only help that person who they will live the rest of their life. Leading by example is also this. This already forgiven selfless additude towards aggression as well as how we deal with all situation to have constant revisions to perfect the self. Turning other cheek also means allowing your self to let go and refrain from any interference or interaction with the now and nature of what is natural without your participation in it. To be able to see these incodences as learning tools to see symbolic meanings behind these conflict driven encounters if you look closer with in the diffrence of reacting and not reacting theres spirtual similarities to the practice of inactivity. Or justation period of manifestation. This new form of presence is closer to a omniobjective stance in the face of a change or conflict . To see all sides and honor the moment while bareing witness to it without demonstrating any emotional reaction or bias of attachment

Wrong. The 'turn the other cheek' is because in the Roman Empire at that time, turning the other cheek meant that if they strike you again, no matter what your or their position, (ie peasant, soldier, governor etc.) you were legally allowed to attack/fight them.

That's well and good, seeing as the highest form of the art of war is not to fight your opponent and win every battle, the highest form of the art of war is to break the resistance of your opponent without fighting. However, if all you do is turn your cheek you get invaded, overrun and destroyed. This is because if there's two opposing factions where faction X is willing and able to use physical force to achieve its goals while faction Y refrains from using physical force to achieve its goals in all situations, then X will destroy Y.

Once as a kid in Jr High, a large bully walked past my desk to sharpen his pencil, and as he passed by, he whacked the top of my head. I didn't respond at all, immediately, but I knew I'd better respond pretty soon, or he and others like him would start to do this and many other similar kinds of things to me. So, the next time he went by, I quickly stood up and whacked the top of his head, and before he had a chance to respond at all, I just as quickly sat back down and faced my paper on my desk. He stood there for a few seconds, and then moved on. He did nothing more to me, and never bothered me again. I never so much as scowled at him, in fact I smiled at him after that, and he smiled back, and we treated each other with respect and courtesy, as if we'd concluded our business acceptably well. But years later that guy cost the state millions of dollars over a period of years by continually re-fighting the charge of murdering his parents. Did my standing up to him inspire him to "stand up" to his parents? Did I, by responding with (even very minor) violence, inadvertently become an incredibly powerful tool of Satan? I hope not. I hope, rather, that what he did would've happened anyway, and that all I did was prevent him from pulling me down into the miasma of dysfunction that surrounded him. That's what I hope, but am I correct? I don't know. Another interpretation is that his act was an invitation to horseplay, and my response was basically to accept his invitation but limit the engagement pretty drastically, and that he was willing to accept that limitation. Which suggests that at that time, at least, he was less villainous than he later appeared. Anyway, the standards of Christ seem practically impossible to live up to. It seems like scripture confirms that, saying "all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God." It seems to say that we're to continually re-apologize for failing to live up to them. "A righteous man, though he falls 1,000 times, gets back up and walks again." Would walking again mean doing nothing the next time some bully whacks me over the head? Was that situation different from the one described by the scripture that exhorts us to turn the other cheek? In what ways? A slap in the face is an insult, right? That's what most pastors seem to think. But is it? Or is it more the act of someone who has been upset by something you did, and is trying to punish, in a painful but non-damaging way, what they view as unacceptable behavior? One time a very young fellow drove his car onto my neighbor's lawn, while he was standing in it, and grinned at him, in a sort of nasty defiant way, through his open car window. My neighbor went over and reached in and slapped him in the face with an open palm. Scripture says "only by pride comes contention" and it says "God hates pride." What sort of pride does God hate? Is it maybe the sort that would cause a person to fail to respond well to attempts to punish, in a painful but non-damaging way, and thereby correct bad behaviour? The scripture exhorts us to "walk humbly on the earth" and it says that "the meek will inherit the earth." Does that happen after the prideful all kill each other off? Or does it mean that by the time humanity has learned enough to achieve peace and overcome sickness and mortality and poverty that they will have learned the value and importance of humility?

It's important to understand a few things re: the middle east mind-set i.e. right hand versus left hand. The left hand is used for cleaning yourself in a certain area I won't get into here but, you understand? Lieu paper or TP is an invention that came along long after. Anyway, in that culture you didn't hit someone with your left hand not even an enemy. So, if you're facing someone and they hit your right cheek then in order to do that they had to backhand you. The cultural view towards honour would interpret such an act as more than being stricken but a declaration of superiority over the stricken person. To then offer the other or left check forces them to hit you open handed if they're going to again. This act makes it more on equal footing. So, basically it doesn't mean become a doormat to those that would exploit that but communicates, "okay, if we're going to do this, the terms have to be equal...here's the other cheek...here's a chance to stop this...what will it be?"

"Turning the other cheek is not an attitude of weakness but of strength. It takes fortitude and self-control to resist the urge to strike back. When we turn the other cheek, we don’t fearfully run away from the person who strikes us but face them confidently, without anger, making it apparent that we can tolerate the pain and that we are not afraid of them doing it again. This usually elicits respect from the other person, often causing them to feel remorse and even to offer a sincere apology. Many people are afraid that this moral principle means that we need to let people injure or kill us without resistance. They will say things like, “The Jews ‘turned the other cheek’ during World War II and as a result six million of them were killed.” According to the New Testament, Jesus did, indeed, allow himself to undergo a slow and excruciatingly painful death at the hands of his sadistic Roman tormentors while asking God to forgive them. In this manner he demonstrated his limitless love for everyone. However, he did not instruct ordinary mortals to passively allow themselves and their loved ones to be slaughtered at the hands of evil men. He did not say, “If someone kills your wife, let them kill your children, too.” His instruction was specifically regarding a slap to the cheek. A slap is not meant to injure or kill us but to humiliate us or provoke us into a fight. If we slap them back, they will probably hit us even harder, leading to escalating violence. If they are more powerful than us, they may seriously harm or kill us. If they are officers of the law or soldiers, they will feel justified arresting or shooting us. However, if we face them without retaliating, their aggression is likely to be defused. The tactic of ‘turning the other cheek’ can work only if the other person has the capacity for conscience. It will not work when sadistic, crazed or hate-filled people are actually intent on injuring or killing us regardless of our behavior. Furthermore, when people slap us, most frequently it’s because they are angry with us. This means they feel that we hurt them in some way--that they are our victims." Some good points on "turn the other cheek," but there is a far deeper wisdom behind it. It's all about taking the viewpoint of God! God is unconditionally loving, perfectly responsible, utterly humble and fearlessly confident. When you turn the other cheek, you show your love of the other person, offering that which they have indicated they want -- to hurt you. Being generous to give them what they want is the ultimate in faith that you will not be harmed by this. Physical harm to your body is far different than any attempt at harm to your true self -- your spiritual self. Turning the other cheek demonstrates that you are humble to the needs of the other person. It also demonstrates that you are fully responsible for their acts against you. And when you are responsible for what happens to yourself, you can never again be a victim. It is an ultimate sign of altruistic, invulnerable love. For invulnerable love means that you never resent anything anyone does against you, but remain unwaveringly loving.

May I ask a question, sir: let's take a family violence situation. For ages slapping weaker family members was a normal behavior of a men, and wife and children literally turned the other cheek, what else could they do. According to the turning cheek rule, we should continue with the tradition, right? How would we benefit by giving someone an opportunity of bulling others? And why we have a law against it nowadays? Sorry, I've just been trying to find the explanation, but haven't found yet any sufficient to be able to justify the acceptance of physical abuse. There should be some other meaning.
@RodMartinJr
@RodMartinJr 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Svetlana, for your wonderful and sobering question. To understand my answer, you need to understand the teachings of Jesus Christ (or even those of Siddhartha Gautama Buddha), and to understand your own spiritual nature. Slapping weaker family members is evil. The source of that evil is ego or self-concern. But reacting to, or resisting evil is also a form of ego (self-concern). Thus, it is also evil. This is why Christ said to resist not evil. This is one of the most difficult lessons to accept, but also one of the most vital. In his lesson of turning the other cheek, Christ also said that if someone asks for your cloak, to give them your shirt, also. He said that if a Roman soldier commanded you to carry his gear for the legal mile, to give the soldier two miles. Why? What is the reasoning behind this? It is one of loving the other person and taking responsibility for their actions against you. This is the position of power. These are two of the four attributes of God I discovered in my triple-miracle on Wilshire Boulevard 1977. I discuss these in my book *_The Art of Forgiveness._* The immortal spirit within each of us is invulnerable -- cannot be hurt by anything, except our own negative emotions (worry, fear, anger, etc). When you act as spirit, you are no longer vulnerable body. When you take responsibility for someone else's actions against you, you cease to be a victim. When this is done correctly, frequently the evil leaves the person, at least temporarily. Christ died on the cross to teach us this lesson. He was turning the other cheek and taking responsibility for everyone's actions throughout all time. We need to follow his example -- not necessarily dying on the cross, but taking responsibility for the actions of others. When you do this, do it without fear or stress; but do it with love. You are taking control over their evil actions. You are giving them that which they wanted. Resisting only feeds their ego, fanning the flames of their anger and frustration. But when you become invisible and intangible to their evil, a part of them wakes up. Some will merely walk away in disgust. Some will find their own shame and repent. And a few might become even more violent, lashing out at something they don't understand. We are all spiritual beings who wear physical bodies. Our objective is to stop making the ego and physical body important, for they are only a barrier to love. We should give up our own self-concern, but still take responsibility for our bodies, our families, our groups and our world. The four traits of God that we need to emulate are: 1) *_Unconditional Love._* Giving and needing nothing in return. A woman married to a monster lives in a particularly difficult position. But if she can love him unconditionally, honor and respect him, despite his evil, she will be honored above all others by God Almighty. Those who smile despite gargantuan pain are the keepers of the eternal flame that is Love itself. This is the key trait of God toward each of us, no matter who we are or what we have done. 2) *_Fearless Confidence._* This is confidence that God will show the way and that He will protect you, even when your body is being abused. God did not hesitate to create the universe or doubt His own ability to make it happen. 3) *_Utter Humility._* This is subservience to the needs of others -- loving others as if they were your own self. This is what makes taking responsibility for the actions of others easier -- including turning the other cheek. 4) *_Perfect Responsibility._* God is responsible for everything in the universe. When we mirror God's responsibility, we move closer to Him. With perfect responsibility, we leave all blame behind and cease to be a victim. My late father told me of a story from when he was a teenager in Santa Monica, California -- visiting relatives during summer vacation from school in West Texas. He got out of his car and put a coin in the parking meter, but as he did so, he accidentally bumped into a man on the sidewalk. The man was a full head taller and twice my father's mass -- and he was hair-trigger angry. He lifted his massive fist to smash my father's puny frame. My father recalled that he felt his life was suddenly over. Instead of feeling fear, he felt peace and offering himself to the man so he could do his worst. Suddenly, the man's fist dropped to his side, like a sail suddenly robbed of wind. He merely turned in disgust and left. There is so much meaning we can find in life, if we have the right mentors to guide us. I was lucky. Hope this helps.

Turn the other cheek means when someone strikes you, do not immediately respond with anger. When you are hit, you are in a moment of decision. In this moment of decision, you can respond any way you want. There are an infinite number of responses available to you. Jesus suggested to his followers that in this moment of decision, when someone hurts you, consider kindness as a choice. You don’t have to respond in kind. You don’t have to meet violence with violence. Consider giving the attacker love, not anger. Peace, not war. Kindness, not cruelty. Its your decision how to respond. You can pour oil on the water. You can turn the other cheek. Or, you can seek an eye for an eye.

There is a story: I decided to start believing in God when I was 12 years old thanks to my teacher. I had a conflict with the boys in my parallel class because I countered their behavior and style when they hurt the weak. I decided to completely follow what religion said and prayed that God would teach me and tell me. I listened to myself and then decided to "turn the other cheek" and endured so long that I learned to be afraid. How does "turn the other cheek" mean, according to the video, "I won't let you hit me again"? Is there even an argument to be made that this is not screaming nonsense? I prayed to God and cried, I was having a hard time, but no one came to me with advice. Six months later I became a cynical nihilist for many years of my adolescence. It was an evil place in the ghetto, the boys in second grade talking prison slang. No one explained anything to me. I don't see God in this situation. What I found in this story is that I lie to myself about my past in a way.
