Nearly 20 years ago, Jose Mourinho made it his mission to become Liverpool's manager only to be politely turned down by the club. If not for Liverpool remaining loyal to Houllier at the time, history would have been written a lot more differently.
Long before Jose Mourinho famously proclaimed that he was "The Special One" and turned Chelsea into a force to be reckoned with in England and in Europe, his heart was set on becoming the next Liverpool manager and leading the club back to the glory days like Ferguson had done with United.
After sending his people to Merseyside to discuss the possibility of succeeding Gerard Houllier, Mourinho was disappointed but emboldened by the soft rejection he received from Liverpool's chief executive. That very evening, Mourinho's Porto side knocked Manchester United out of the Champions League and went on to beat AS Monaco in the final.
By the summer of 2004, Mourinho's head had been turned by Chelsea and he soon replaced Claudio Ranieri who replaced Rafa Benitez at Valencia. Benitez then joined Liverpool from Valencia and went on to form a memorable rivalry with Mourinho as Liverpool and Chelsea played each other numerous times over the next few years.
