FSU fan for 42 years, 20 year booster and member of TBE and I feel completely opposite 😂. I have actually gone back and forth over the years but Miami is securely and now forever in my most hated category. Their fans are the primary reason for this.

@jamesb0255 I'm feel the exact same way, and for years Florida was the clear cut #1 most hated. But just in the last cpl of years Miami has surpassed them to the point where I will be genuinely rooting for the gators to beat Miami in the swamp in their opener. I never thought that would happen, but here we are

This game has always mattered in-state. There are no rivalries like rivalries on a peninsula. Miami v FSU were two teams with nads willing to play each other even if it ruined each others' natty chances. Bowden himself said put on my gravestone, "At least I played Miami." 1987 the Gators went down to the old Orange Bowl with the Heisman front runner for the opener. His Heisman chances were over before Labor Day.

Actually it's Florida State law that UF, Fsu & Miami MUST play each other EVERY YEAR.

@@rvail136 Actually, that law never passed. It was threatened when UF tried to chicken out of playing FSU. UF did successfully cancel the annual game vs Miami after the 87 game when their starting' QB's Heisman campaign ended before Labor Day. Since 1980, the three schools combined for 11 nattys and another 9 runner ups. 13 (6 nattys 7 runner ups) of those were concentrated during the period 1986-2002. And that's not to mention some of the personalities involved from Steve Spurrier, Jimmy Johnson, Bobby Bowden, a mascot getting arrested,

@@rvail136 Florida stopped playing Miami every year in the late 80's. Florida claimed that they had to drop Miami as an annual game because the SEC required an extra conference game. Miami Fans thought Florida was tired of getting beaten. This year is the first time in a while that Miami & Florida will play.

It ticks me off when people make ignorant comments like this. Josh you handled this question perfectly. You have to understand, there is no relevant team that doesn't have kids from Florida. There was a time Miami, FSU and Florida were all in the top 10. You are ignorant to the history of the game so don't respect the fact that the greatest college football players of all time and NFL players came from this rivalry. Just because they get commitments to Alabama and UGA now that doesn't make it irrelevant. Florida will ALWAYS be relevant when it comes to the game of football.

As a kid growing up in the 80's and 90's, any game involving two of the three main Florida schools (UF, FSU, The U) was a must-watch. Sticking just to FSU-Miami, the epic 1987 game (FSU, down 26-19, scored a late TD and went for 2 instead of playing for the tie: they missed and lost 26-25), Wide Right I, Wide Right II, FSU'S Revenge (the 28-10 breakthrough win), three more FSU losses on missed kicks, the Miami Muff, and a few close games recently, have all been fun.

From 1983-2013 One of the big three finished the season ranked 1st or 2nd 17 times out of 30. Meaning champion or running up in over half the football seasons during that period and if you look 1983-2003 the number is a staggering 14 of 20 seasons, 70%. Kids today cannot understand the type of dominance those schools had on the sport and because of that how fierce those rivalries were and still are between the programs even if the nation is less interested as a whole. Sure “look at the SEC, 2006 to now” ok but all of the teams in the sec aren’t arch rivals with each other and aren’t made up almost exclusively by kids who may have known each other since they were little boys.

Auburn v. Florida, Nebraska v. Oklahoma, Kansas v. Missouri, Colorado v. Nebraska, etc., are all gone. People will get over Florida State v. Miami going away. Yes, rivalries matter, but I don't get Pate's take on this topic. Toss-in FSU leaving for the SEC (if it happens), the conference going to a 9-game schedule, and it'll happen in short order.

Therefore, most kids in Florida tended to stay in-state or close to a college football team nearby. Charlie Ward hailed from Georgia but lived just 45 minutes north of Tallahassee. Hence, he played where everyone could easily watch him play ball. This is why Miami enjoyed such prominence in the 80s and 90s, as many players opted to stay close to home. The real shocker occurred when someone relocated from Miami to Tallahassee, Gainesville, or Jacksonville to Miami. Television revolutionized college football in the mid-2000s, and now, once again, the Name, Image, Likeness (NIL) rules and the transfer portal have reshaped the landscape.

FSU fans like me are convinced that we're back. We've got great coaches and the sky is the limit. FSU fans like me want UM to be back too. Why? They're our rival and we "hate" them right? We want them back because when both teams are at the top the rivalry is incredibly exciting and fun. I'd like UF to be better too for similar reasons, but nothing matches the FSU-UM rivalry.

Let's be real the state of Florida had a monopoly on college football for decades and the NCAA had to do something about it. I believe our programs were systematically weakened. Bama, OSU, ect wouldnt be shit without our players. NIL is changing things and once that fence starts to get built again the rest of these programs are gonna shrink back into the crowd.

Bingo! As a Miami fan who lives here in West Central Florida, this state control CFB! The SEC bag men ran a muke 2003 to 2020 here in Florida and the NCAA turned a blind eye. NIL has even the playing field! Especially for a small private school like Miami! Miami may not have a large student population and alumni base like FSU, UF, UCF, USF, FIU or even FAU! However, Miami is located in one of the money and power base areas in the nation and the world which is South Florida/Miami. Miami has rich millionaire and billionaire alums and booster in South Florida, Atlanta, DC, Chicago, LA, NYC and etc. These people have businesses and corporations. They millionaire and billionaire friends have businesses and corporations. NIL is nothing but a tax right for them on a yearly basis to Miami. USC is about to explode as well with their NIL! We all know the alumni and boosters, they have in Hollywood with Directors, actors, producers and etc in So Cal, nationally and internationally.

@@eizaguirre2184I'm an FSU alum and the Florida game is usually more important. Pretty much has been since the 90s if not always. There's a degree of mutual respect between FSU and Miami. FSU and Florida hat each other. It's not unlike Michigan-Notre Dame and Michigan-Ohio State. I know ND and Michigan don't play every year but that's the best comparison I can make. We don't care for either but we loathe UF.

You can say that! But since 1980, Miami vs FSU has meant more to CFB than OSU vs Michigan! Miami has played in a bowl game since 1980 with a chance at a national title 13 times and FSU 8 times. Since 1983, Miami has won 5 national titles and FSU 3! The winner of that game has affected things national more times than OSU vs Michigan!

That rivalry aided in CFB becoming more than just regional but national! 80's Miami ushered in the modern NFL passing game til CFB. 80's Miami pushed the theme of speed on defense at all 11 starting positions. Because of Miami 80's success, it became the first College sport program to get a apparel deal for its sports program from Nike in 1987! Now every P5 have apparel deals in which some schools get 10 million or more per year. The shoe/apparel companies through Miami FB saw a profit could be made endorsing College sports programs! Miami, FSU, and UF success 80 to 2013 showed the nation the vast amount of HS FB talent here in Florida and the need for non Florida schools to recruit Florida HS FB talent.

Lets me add to my comment! Since 1980, Miami, FSU and UF combined have played in a bowl game/playoff game 25 (Miami 12 times, FSU 8times and UF 4 times) times with a chance to win a national title and they combined to win 11 national titles. No other state comes close to this!
