Wise move! Both of my sons are (contemporary painting) artists and the custom work was just not bringing them joy whatsoever. They dropped it and do as you said which is designing from the heart. Now they are passionate with what the are creating and the ideas are limitless. People purchase because it’s the artist vision that captures their attention.. you will do great!

I also do wood engravings handmade and I don't use laser. Not that I have a problem with ppl that uses lasers. It's just not me

If you are not enjoying what you do it's time to make a change. You don't need to impress anyone but yourself. And if you're loosing money it's really time for a change. That is not sustainable unless you're absolutely rich.
