The big deal with Hubris was Bestow creatures. If you unsummoned just the dude, all the aura creatures attached would go onto the battlefield.

The reason for the weirdness of bouncing auras to hand on Hubris is because a normal bounce spell would trigger Bestow.

Fun fact: The “fixed” pin to the earth is called tightening coils and was printed in Battle for Zendikar!

If you're lucky with lands like James is, on the turn after you play the Hydra, you can monstrous for 7 and get 3 3/3's! Value!

I consider "hubris" more as a veratile protection spell on your own creautures since you get your auras back and can trigger YOUR heroic stuff again. Used on an opponents creature is just a worse unsummon (which still is what you need sometimes)

The return of "But why is leg?" is enough to get my like. I am indeed a simple man. I hear a good bit, I give it a thumb up.

In the spirit of "better late than never", I would like to submit "HELL-vetica" to the nickname episode for Font of Ire.

Hubris was for when your opponent bestowed many eidolons, naiads and lamias onto their hero, then hubris bounces them all which stops the bestow creatures from becoming a problem, where usual removal would just make that situation worse.

I love the depiction of enchantment creatures with the starry nyx style.

The punishment for hubris is having to live long enough to really understand your mistakes. True punishment was saved for those who refused to learn or openly chose to repeat them, so I think it's a huge flavor win. There are degrees of hubris. Oedipus learned, so his story ends with him alive, miserable but wiser. Sisyphus cheated death twice, and Achilles saw the consequences of his decisions in Patroclus, yet chose to stay, so they not only died but suffered eternal torture.

I had just gotten to the end when the prices appeared and they were not the Journey into Nyx cards that were shown to me. I went to look at the comments to see other people make choice quips about it, only to find that they wouldn't load on my phone. A quick refresh and the video was GONE! Figured you had taken it down to edit. It happens to the best of us!

That Broodmaster was my win con in my Bant enchantress deck in Commander. I created entirely too much mana (usually somewhere in the 50-60 range), made this Dude monstrous, then swing with him and all his children (via Concordant Crossroads) and a Pathbreaker Ibex.

I just got a born of the gods box today for my bday! these are sets that came out when I didn't play magic so they are pretty cool to me especially sense I'm building a there's themed deck from my cards I got in there's beyond death

I have been enjoying this series, its cool to chew through these in a short time, and I really enjoy hearing Graham's take on all these cards. I love seeing the added photography of the actual card that came from the pack compared to just seeing an image on the card reader. I do however miss hearing Nelson and Cameron's take on cards too. I hope as your production continues to evolve based on public health and personal choice you could do a hybrid version of this format. 3 is a crowd, but Graham and someone else would be nice to see, and hopefully without adding any significant time to the episode length.

For those who want the math: 3 mana: It's an 8/8 and you have a 1/1 5 mana: It's a 9/9 and you have two 2/2s 7 mana: It's a 10/10 and you have three 3/3s 9 mana: It's an 11/11 and you have four 4/4s 11 mana: It's excessive and this is probably one of those games where you could have won turns ago but are trying to show your friend this cool combo you have even at the risk of losing the game.

I would love too see the card next to Graham for the duration that he is talking about it. Combining the card art and mechanics with commentary :D

When I first got into the game, my friend had a legion's initiative he showed me saying it was "mythic". It must have been the first multicolored card I saw cause I opened a Nyx Weaver and Underworld Coinsmith in a fat pack and got incredibly incredibly excited that I pulled TWO mythics

Actually pulling my favourite card in broodmaster from my first set :) brings back memories... and a certain thassa's devourer vs lava axe deck..

Hydra Broodmaster is a secondhand wincon in my modern urzatron deck, along with wurmcoil engine and all is dust. But really, hydra broodmaster wins games. (The main wincon is, of course, to hit heliod sun-crowned and triskelion off of an entwined tooth and nail)

Hydra Broodmother is great in Commander, where you can have a ton of mana to dump into it. I've made 7x 7/7s before. :D

Did Graham consult with The Oracle of Theros?

Journey is one of my favorite sets and Theros is my favorite blocks. Hydra Broodmaster is one of the best pulls. if it monstrosities for 5+ your opponents are screwed.

Triggering heroic 2 times for 4 mana and putting 2 counters was okay, and just g trigger heroic was definitely playable. In that format you were paying g to put 2 counters on something almost always, sometimes 3 or 4, and pay 4 mana meant it was likely adding 4 or 5 counters or more of value. Like there was a green uncommon 3 drop that when targeted put 2 counters on itself and was a 2/2, paying g to make it a 5/5 was good, archetype was very all in but it was aggro enough to run over most stuff if good.

My pitch on flavor for Hubris; You play a bunch of auras, egg-basketing one big beefy creature. But you have five or six in hand. Everything is great. You then get slapped with Hubris. All those cards are returned to hand and you yourself are forced to discard a bunch of cards next turn, choosing between saving your bounced cards or what you had in hand before, because you now have a hand of nine or ten. Or worse. The more auras on a single creature the more your hand is flooded. You thought so what if one big creature dies, I have all this gas. Or you’re super confident your one super stacked monster will win before they can deal with it. Etc. And so you pay for your own hubris.

Fist time I ever won with Hydra Broodmaster was making 36 36/36 hydras. God was so good

All I've seen of this set is LRR's preview card(s) which I do not remember, so this should be interesting.

The hydra was gross, 7/7 for 6 that regularly was a 10/10 that made 3 3/3s if it untapped assuming land drop if on curve. And as a later play would be an 11/11 that made 4 4/4s
