Journey to the Chateau

Жыл бұрын

In this week's episode, Patrick and Stuart are working in the Chateau gardens by pruning the mature fruit trees and cutting back the invasive ivy. When the ivy comes down, another new discovery is revealed! Patrick also clears out a building to use as a greenhouse, and they share the arrival of the spring bulbs that they will be planting in the chateau gardens.

Excellent idea sorting out the rubbish. I've seen Chateau owners revycle and reuse all kinds of stones they find for their walls, wood for pieces of wood that need bracing or renoing. Metal pieces from windows and doors can be reused when polished up. WONDERFUL. IDEA FOR ORIGINAL CHATEAU ITEMS. EXCELLENT😀

My parents had a massive flower bed with dahlias of different sizes and colors, zinnias, gladiolus, some marigolds for their summer cutting garden. Then they had rose gardens with a couple hundred varieties of roses. Needless to say, our house had vases of flowers in every room. Their greenhouse helped with growing seedlings and storing the dahlia bulbs. My dad also used plexiglass as a substitute for broken glass panes by just screwing the sheets of plexiglass into the frames. I kept up the tradition of planting cutting gardens with my own twist of style, but to this day i have flowers all throughout my house. I can visualize the door being returned to the building. Every bit of cleanup and restoration makes such a huge difference. You are the best. xx

Stephanie, you conjured a wonderful image in my mind, yet again! Wonderful. Thank you so much. We will have a cutting garden for sure. Not this year, but for the future, we need a good amount of flowers. So glad you continue the tradition. We are excited about the door. And later the window. We will have to do a full tour of that wing of the chateau. Love, as always and a big thank you from Colombe. 😘🥰💖

The greenhouse is fantastic! I love the doors and you hoo window. All the gorgeous door fixtures. I want a chateau so much, my husband despises the idea. So, I live vicariously through all you lovely chateau Châtelaines. I’m blown away by the size of the ivy roots, they’re huge! The greenhouse is gonna need a bunch of shelves and pots. I can’t wait to see what you do! It’s so exciting seeing each area change. You guys are doing such a great job! The ivy is crazy! Glad to see you chopping away. I love pruning. ♥️🇫🇷🏰

Good morning Patrick & Stuart, this is such a practical video, taking a break from the renovation, out in the garden, the best alternative! Love that little seedling room, I would remove the ceiling completely after fixing the roof and take out the window completely and build a new frame with new window panes, just saying. Imagine a window in the wall and door and looking out onto that new dahlia flower bed, Oh my goodness, that would be wonderful. I have a suggestion: visit Claus Dalby Welcome to my garden. It is so enjoyable, Claus seems like the perfect gardener!! He uses "dahlia cages" to keep the plants upright, believe me when it rains, they all bend over as they are heavy plants and some can even snap. If noting else, make yourselves these cages, you will be so glad you have gone to the extra cost and time to make these. Just trust me on this. Your dahlias are going to be stunning. Remember, as the tubers multiply, you can sell them to cover costs. I am so excited when I saw that box with the plants. Remember, prepare the soil, good drainage, very rich soil and feed those plants!, you will be so rewarded. I am so happy for you at the Chateaux, you have settled in so nicely and now things are starting to buzz. Try and buy some citrus, lemon a must as well as limes. You have so much space and these will reward you with very little labour. It all is hard work, but it is good for you, mind body and soul. Do take care, always be safe, your videos are so enjoyable, Why don't you remove that Boston ivy completely at the little potting room, plant some boxwood's and make a little hedge, it would look so cute! Remember, I am just saying, suggesting. Love all the doge together, they are just too gorgeous. Many blessing, Elize.

Patrick you did a great job removing all the ivy from the Greenhouse, walls and trees. Yes, ivy suffercates everthing and damages constructions. The little building will make either a lovely greenhouse or potting shed. Maybe when you do the roof you could add skylights with openings activated by heat. We have these in our greenhouse and they work so well. Also consider top hung opening windows or windows that tilt from the centre to add air flow. We found a company in Poland that makes made to measure windows, beautifully made, very helpful and great value, they are called Spar windows. Love the discovery of the door, another gem.

I am so very excited for you both Patrick and Stewart in all your discoveries at your new home. Removing the ivy and finding where there used to be a door and window is an amazing find. How different the room will be once they are put into place. I don’t blame you Patrick for being excited. Hope Stewards ankle is healing ok. The green house is so nice, and I love your raised planters for starting your seeds. I can’t wait to see your dahlias all in bloom. The colors are amazing.your gardens are going to be a blaze of colors. You both have accomplished so much in the time you’ve been in your new home. I am looking forward to your kitchen reveal too, especially since you both love to cook and entertain. I didn’t get a chance to say how fun the tractor is for you and will be so helpful in many chores. Way to tackle the cleaning up of the friends Patrick. You must sleep hard at night after all the hard work you’ve been doing. Ivy is beautiful but is deadly. So glad to see you tackle that tough ivy branch. It also destroys rockery too. I love that you get so much fruit. Sorry if this post is so long. Love the bedroom you did your video from, so pretty. Take care and love from cold Northern California. ❤❤

And the magic door.......find of the vlog! That will certainly shorten your journey to the out buildings and provide a nice area for a patio or pool! Stuart, you are getting quite the collection of toys! It must make garden restoration much less backbreaking. The greenhouse is darling! I agree with the viewer below who suggested a panel of plexiglass over the face of the whole window until it can be restored. It would have the similar effect of glass--it would function better than just putting up a "clear" plastic tarp. I am curious.....how water tight is the chapel? I can't wait to see the inside.

Retired landscaper here ... I don't know if you have Round-up in France, perhaps you can find something equivalent but all you need is a tiny amount. (I buy the smallest bottle I can get and work from a baby food glass jar with a lid) - When you have cut the ivy stalk, separating it from its food source of the roots, with a Q-tip or small paint brush paint the full strength liquid on the cut part of the root, making sure you have coated the bark thoroughly. Roundup is a systemic herbicide so it gets absorbed into the plant and kills the roots. Hence this will rid the trees of the ivy without the chance of damaging any of the trees it has grown up on. BE SURE TO WEAR GLOVES!!! And eye protection would be a good idea, too, if you're a klutz. :] Feel free to ask me any questions you might have, I lived in France for 3 years so understand your challenges. Keep up the good work.

Hi Patrick and Stuart another hidden gem the chateau keeps giving door would look great on the outside wall I think that room would be great for growing plants as it gets the sun you have a great selection of plant plants they are going to look so lovley you just have to decide where to put them can’t wait to see them can’t say I blame you getting out of the kitchen sometimes doing something different is good and you would not have found the door and you also had fresh air even if it was a bit cold

Hi there my friends ! Just a quick hello as everyone here in California braces for yet another EPIC storm. Its been awhile since I posted, my last posts have been to late to be seen I think. I'm not getting notifications from KZfaq. I will look into that. Anyway, Lake Tahoe and the Los Angeles mountain ranges as well as everywhere else are literally under snow. Entire houses ! Palm Springs may flood🗻🏔🌨🌧🌊........🛀 from all of the melting runoff. People in the mountains are trapped in their homes running out of food. Its really been a mess. Anyway I am happy you both are doing well. Much better than us. Much love, much love !!! ❤ 🌴🌆🌉🌉🌆❤🌴🌴🌴🌴🌴🌴🌴

What a difference just cleaning up makes. Great space for a greenhouse start up. Don't you have a pile of spare rooftiles that you can put up to prevent further leakage. A lick of paint on the door and voila full operational greenhouse

When chores are so transformative they add to your way of living, making way for some exciting future plans in my opinion. The more you do, the more your home and property looks amazing and welcoming. That little room is so perfect as a greenhouse space. I cannot wait to see all the lovely flowers in full bloom and ready to come indoors for some beautiful floral arrangements. All you do has to be so satisfying. Have an amazing rest of the week.

More than any of the other chateaus I look at, I find de Colombe the most entrancing! Blessed with builder-owners it is the most complete thing. A tiny village in itself! Any activity of an industrious farmstead just produced happy mutterings of "yes, yes it MUST have its OWN building....let's see, generous windows, well placed doors. Yes, yes, late autumn, winter, time for more building!" When you have gravel and flower gardens with straw skeps it will be a living picture! I do hope incorporating the original fireplace into a kitchen update isn't going to cheapen it regardless of how functional; because de Cologne I think, whose dignity & integrity needs to be nurtured and protected needs not to be made into something suburban and/or Pottery Barn looking like tens of thousands of others. Look forward to seeing it.

Thank you so much. It is a special place. We will of course change the kitchen to make sure we can cook for 20 people and it is still authentic for a chateau. We looked at how to tile floors and walls, using traditional fronts in our custom color. It will, of course, not pleas everyone. But it is from the heart. Hugs from Colombe. 💕💖💕

Absolutely love the dogs, how many do you have? Just consider the hight of your garden fence for the dahlias, half a meter would not be high enough for our two Airedales terriers, they see this as a challenge thinking… what is she hiding behind this, let’s find out😂😂 We had to be very inventive in our garden to make it safe for our plants 🤔

The bed is so beautiful that you filmed today. It made a lovely backdrop. I had to laugh when you said that you needed a break from the sanding and mess of kitchen renovations and then proceeded to clean out the random messy outbuilding for the garden shed and attack the garden like a demented Don Burke (Famous Australian TV Gardner). It was like, tell me you are renovating the Chateau without telling me you are renovating a Chateau!!!

I had a great problem with ivy climbing everywhere the only thing that got rid of it was common household salt but you couldn’t plant it near a tree because it would kill your tree but if you have any problem trees salt will kill it off especially conifers just pour the salt on the ground but you cannot plant flowers in the ground after

Nice job finding the door after already finding the window. Patrick, you are like the energizer bunny! You really have stamina. I did see Stuart trimming as well. The green house is perfect once the windows are replaced, although with a southern exposure it may warm up nicely until you can get to that task. You both switched tasks, but I hardly consider it a break. Take care my friends, Ralph Rocchiccioli
