People weren't laughing because they didn't know if they should. JP explains it in the talk actually. Part of his weirdness is how he's humorous but sincere in the same sentences and it confuses people at first.

I talked to my wife about how I liked his delivery of comedy and sincerity at the same time because it matched my own way of speaking with its tendency to regularly confuse people to my own amusement. Then I unpaused the video and he proceeded to walk through that exact scenario. I had to stop the video and play it back for her because he literally just made my point. I guess that's why I find him so hilarious.

The things that make you a unique individual, the things that made up his personality and made him different from other people. I agree 100% embrace your differences, your weirdness. I totally agree with your perspective! I am a retired teacher of 40 years and one major point I always drove home in my classroom is…WEIRD IS WONDERFUL! I think everyone has quirks or different ways of thinking or doing something. Many feel bad about themselves or others because of these quirky things. So, by valuing these differences we need to recognize that WEIRD IS WONDERFUL. This gave my students permission to being different. Especially when I recognize that I am weird and always have been. This helped me to value my person even in the midst of bullying while I was growing up. It always makes me smile when I hear students and/or their parents reiterate my motto…WEIRD IS WONDERFUL! I pray that this carries through another generation to help heal the self esteem of our hurting children.

It’s not easy to reach an audience that is hearing these things for the first time.This audience in particular seemed comprised mostly of business class still even trying to grasp “Spirituality”mentality. Not surprised that they were unprepared for “Ultra Spirituality” when they haven’t gotten to New Age yet. Just my impression. I’m sure they didn’t know if he was serious or not because combining comedy with the sacred is very hard for most people. I’ve heard many life-coaches and spiritualists talk and have gotten something out of it but when Jp came along- he had me laughing at myself because he touched on some heavy insecurities of mine that I didn’t know I had and after I laughed- I realized I was laughing at myself then thought about that. It made me want to hear more of what he had to say because I was finding out about me in a non-threatening, unafraid way. When I look back from the future at my journey and how much I evolved, I will say JP Sears was one of my teachers.

I've heard this before. Trouble is I know people who fully express themselves, down to the last quirk, and don't follow any social conventions. They're impossible to be around for lengthy periods. The seeming randomness drives people away when there's no purpose behind it. Conformity is popular because it's safe. If you decide to differ from the norm in any endeavor, the odds of differing in a negative direction are high. Consider creativity applied to driving, or accounting. Yeah, sometimes we want people to conform. There needs to be a balance. If you wish to be different in certain ways, have a reason. Don't be different just for its own sake. That's more shallow than conformity.
@PeterSitterly7 жыл бұрын
It's a good thing he addresses precisely that in this talk.
@motherofdragons72467 жыл бұрын
JenoPaciano I think nonconformity for the sake of not being conformed without reason is awful too!! Everything needs balance, you are correct!!:)
@scarystarbeing59326 жыл бұрын
I have to disagree. There's a difference between being authentically weird and being "non conformist". I experience the world in a very different way. I express it out and those with eyes to see and hearts to hear can decipher the meaning of why I am the way I am. Even when I try to be normal people call me weird so I stopped trying to fit the expectation. I am finding more often that now, I have more people gaining benefit from my beingness. It is worth the discomfort for them to listen to what I have to say. Yes, conformity is logical and rational in certain circumstances. I obey traffic laws. I sleep in a nice, comfortable bed. I am just like any other human in many ways. I refuse to censor my perception. If a person enjoys exploring the mysteries then I am a great person to talk to. If small talk is all that is desired, I will oblige but I'm awkward at best. I think that is the point that is being offered here. Don't dim your light. It does serve a purpose. It is more fulfilling for me, to live a life of deeper meaning than to strive for mediocrity.

'Expressing weirdness could be one of the worst things you ever do, but what if it's one of the best?' Just because it worked out for one person, doesn't mean it's right for everybody. The point about the risk averse and the avoidant is that they'd rather not find out. A life of mediocrity will always be preferable to risking humiliation or rejection for the chance of improvement.

I think I agree, that we have to accept our "weirdness", and we shouldn't be ashamed of being different. But I cannot agree fully. Why is it that nowdays everybody expresses only the differences, and uniqueness? We're all the same and unique at the same time. And it's not a problem, to be similar to someone. Every tiger for example is the same and different at the same time. If they weren't, we couldn't define anything like "tiger". Our shared qualities (same-things) create "normality". Our shared abilities make us able to communicate with each other, to understand each other. If there's nothing similar, nothing same-ness, only uniqueness, the result will be the exaggerated individualism. I think the truth is somehow in the middle. It's okay to be different in some aspects, and it's okay to be the same in some aspects.
