Chandrayaan-3 will take 40 days to reach the Moon because the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) does not have a rocket powerful enough to put it on a direct path to the Moon. Instead, Chandrayaan-3 will use a more energy-efficient trajectory called a Lunar Transfer Trajectory (LTT).
The LTT involves first putting the spacecraft into a low Earth orbit, then using a series of engine burns to gradually increase its speed and altitude until it reaches the Moon. This takes longer than a direct trajectory, but it is also safer and more reliable.
The path of Chandrayaan-3 will take it over the Indian Ocean, the Pacific Ocean, and the South Pole before entering lunar orbit. The lander and rover will then separate from the orbiter and land on the Moon's surface.
The landing is scheduled to take place on August 23, 2023. If all goes according to plan, Chandrayaan-3 will be the first mission to successfully soft-land in the vicinity of the lunar south pole.
