Just to clarify, the restrictor was expanded when the air intake duct clamp was tightened down, not when the car was at anything but idle. The officials check the restrictor with the engine off, and the air duct removed to give access to the inlet of the turbo where the restrictor resides. Once the air duct was reinstalled and the clamp tightened the restrictor moved forward to let air in around the sides of it. Simply genius.

Still watching on this. Juha is the legend! & yes, this is the truly & purely rally car sound that have to! GT4 is insane. With the finest turbo tech at that time!

I grew up a few kilometers from Juha's home in Laukaa. And this is one of my dream cars. On some of my dream roads. Therefore: respect for putting up this vid :)

you are absolutely right. the leader of fia at the time said it was the single most genius idea he had ever seen and he was still in awe of it to this day. i remember reading an in depth article about this when it happened. the article said the technology was "space age".

How did they eventually find the illegal turbo restrictor????? It seemed to happen after juha had a crash part way thru the 95 season!!!

uh, no it wasnt. lancia wasnt around in 1994. they had a groupA team for a while in its early starts. this is 1994. as far as i can see, lancias last competitive year in WRC ended in 1993.

as you know, the cars are power limited to 300bhp via the FIA turbo restricter. toyota messed with theirs so the restricter would be regulation size when the car was idling...and scrutineered. but when throttle was applied when the car was competing, the restricter expanded, letting in more air and thus, more power. they were banned for 12months. and ive found that it wasnt this car that was banned.

wasnt this the car that toyota got banned for? with the whole "space age" technology of having a FIA restrictor on the turbo that expands at full throttle, so when the stewards were checking the car at idle after and before stages, it all looked normal and regulation. just wondering...i love toyotas.

toyota was definitely the banned company, AND, even more so, it was only juha kankkunen's gt4 that was illegally tampered with. the scrutineersand even FIA president, Max Mosely were amazed by the technical ingenuity of toyotas engineers expanding turbo restricter.
