32-year-old Dr. J dunks all over McHale and Bird in ECF Game 1. Celtics killed the 76ers in this one, but Erving was flying in Boston Garden.

I agree. The Eastern Conference championship belonged to those two teams - Philadelphia Sixers and Boston Celtics. 1980-76ers (defeated Celtics); 1981-Celtics (76ers); 1982-76ers (defeated Celtics); 1983-76ers (defeated Milwaukee Bucks); 1984-Celtics (defeated Bucks); 1985-Celtics (defeated 76ers), etc...

Bird and McHale were 6 ft 10 and j dunked over them like they were nothing...that was a really vicious rivalry in early 80s...celtic fans had a red 6 hanging in stands during his last season, we really respected and admired him. A young Dr J was just a monster in the 70s...interesting that a older havlicek held his own with Dr J and a older Dr J held his own with larry legend in early 80s, just go's to show they were great players in 60s, 70s and 80s...The nba does not start and end with mj and lbj. Btw, Dr J could've dunked over them too
@leoderosia9279
@leoderosia9279 5 жыл бұрын
@slip satch great story, just shows how good havlicek was even at 37 and 38. They had a hard fought 7 game series in 1977 which was Dr Js first year in nba. Celtics were defending champions and it rekindled the Philly Boston rivalry at least for one year until 1980 when it really took off again. I love pierce but there is no way you can put him ahead of John Havlicek in celtic lore...interesting that most great players in nba history had to go thru Celtics at some point to win a championship ...I would say Dr J coming into nba in 1976 was probably most anticipated newcomer that I can remember even over bird, magic and lew alcindor.
@leoderosia9279

@slip satch I loved the late , great super clutch DJ too, parish of course, Paul Silas, Hondo, Tommy Heinsohn , satch Sanders, westphal in 74, Charlie Scott in 76, tiny Archibald, Maxwell. I was born in 65 so Bill Sharman, sam jones, cousy ,tommy, kc and Russ were before my time. I think Russell and bird were best team players in nba history. Russell was really smart, had long arms, great stamina, quickness, could jump high and I wish I could've seen him in 1962 courtside in his prime. I love wilt too who I consider most dominant player in nba history, he averaged 41.5 pts, 25 boards and probably 7 blocks a game in his first 7 years. ....I know wilt was pissed when sports illustrated called rodman best rebounder ever and wilt called Russ about it. Russ and wilt are in another universe when it comes to rebounding and defense around the basket. A prime , healthy wilt could've easily scored 50 on rodman or anybody for that matter. ..Wilt was far bigger and stronger than rodman and both guys would've Dennis destroyed on the boards, just too big and athletic. It irks me when only Jordan or lbj are mentioned as best ever, what about Russell, wilt, Kareem, bird and magic? Esp Russ and Wilt...Russell is very guarded but he loved Wilt Chamberlain and I know every hall of famer in Celtics history looks up to Bill Russell...Bird, mchale and parish greatly admire him ....red and Russell were cornerstones of the dynasty.

That Celtic-Sixer rivalry from 79-83 was one of the best eras of the NBA and tape delay was still going on. This was the beginning of the Bird-Magic era but the Lakers really didnt have a rival during that period from the West(except for Moses Malone and Houston upsetting them in 81). Those East Finals in 81 and 82 were must see games. But if you ask Celtic fans, they looked at the Sixers as a bump in the road, they were trying to get to the Lakers and they finally got them in 84 when Doc was starting to slow down.

@@sanweinstein5342 Currently there are no character players, there are few who play defense, the rest are shotguns and selfish. I have been watching basketball since I am 7 years old and I am 61. Many people talk about MJ but they forgot that MJ had Pippen who was his bodyguard at all times and he prepared the tray at all times, now ... who had Julius Erving in Philly? Maurice Cheeks and not always. There is no one who convinces me that MJ has been # 1 ... many # 1 have passed such as Dr. J, Jabbar, Bird, Ervin Johnson, Oscar Robertson, Wilt Chamberlain and the list is long. MJ is part of that list, but not # 1 ... Dr. J is # 1, because he revolutionized the game and changed the concept.

Dr J was an athletic marvel, who unfortunately was very inconsistent in the half court game due to a very inconsistent jumper, which is exactly where MJ excelled. Dr J I don’t believe is a top 10 player of all time, although I recognize that is debatable. He was on some absolutely loaded Sixer teams that fell short. It required MVP Moses Malone to get Dr J his title. The loss the Sixers had to the Blazers in the finals was inexcusable

The media wants you to think Bird and Magic saved or changed the NBA..... they may have enhanced it, but in all actuality Julius changed AND saved the NBA in 1976 when the ABA folded and Philadelphia got him. Shame Doc didn't get those first 5 years of his prime playing in the ABA with Philly .... otherwise this narrative is even greater. Just listen to players, coaches, and owners talk about him..... Julius was humble and respectful, yet on the court he was one highlight after another. Had EVERY Converse Poster Doc was ever on throughout my bedroom as a kid growing up.... he WILL ALWAYS be my favorite player!

Everyone tries to compare players, past and present, but its really hard to do. Dr J is and always will be my favorite player of all time. He could do things with the ball and momentum that Jordan couldnt do. So elegant and graceful in the air. Always said he is by far the most underrated player ever. Jordan was so athletic and a better overall shooter. Neither could touch the Bird when it came to shooting the ball. Bird was also gifted with a tenacity that was hard to deal with. Also its difficult to compare players of different eras, although players like these gents would be great in any era. Chamberlain for instance would not have been quite as dominate today because of the size difference in opponents. Back then, 7ft players were few. Now we have 7fters handling the ball and shooting like guards. Difficult comparisons. I stay away from the GOAT comparisons and just remember how great they all were. Unfortunately, as usual, money is ruining the game. Thats another comment for another section.

There are only a few that can just dunk over anyone. MJ is the other one that comes to mind .Because of the huge Hands that these players possess and of course with the insane leaping ability they can manipulate the ball when its way over head so they can make adjustments to the defender and even change hands which makes it almost impossible to block without getting in foul trouble, truly physically gifted from the ground up

trha2222 The difference between MJ and Kobe is hand size MJ has huge hands for a guy 6'6" now Julius had bigger hands than anyone his size also the ice man had them big hands for finger rolling in your face. MJ and Dr. J had huge hands and can pick the ball up off the dribble with one hand .Leaping ability is also a factor then you got hang time like Jordan and Julius both had great hang time but I have played against guys who could dunk like mad but they had no post game or midrange jumper thats the difference between good and great. My jumper beats your dunk all day of course for a man 6'2" i could barely dunk( white boy) lol but try and stop me from 18' or in the post

Bird really gets up there to challenge on that second one, but he's too far under, a hair too late. He then manages to duck mid-air without fouling -- not easy to do -- accomplishing the sportsmanlike thing of allowing Doc his highlight dunk. I don't think you see a play like this in today's NBA, mainly because Dr. J isn't in the NBA, but also because there's nobody like the guy trying to stop the dunk either. What a play!!!

You cannot fairly compare Dr. J. with other great players like Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul Jabber, Wilt Chamberlain, Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant,... because they were all very special, unique and unforgettable players in their time period, position, role on the court,... Comparing them would be like comparing Isaac Newton to Albert Einstein, Richard Feynman, Stephen Hawking... You cannot really compare them because they were all special and unique to their generation and moment in time! All we can say is that they were all important and special!
