In your postings, many times you are touching on the subject of fandom over reaction to something that many of us in Western world, will find totally normal and inconsequential, like an artist’ smoking, dating, sexual and romantic life, etc. But the majority of fandom views of Kpop are not from the western world but east Asian, and Asian: the artists, BTS members included, are viewed and judged from a very different perspective: neo-Confucianism. Unfortunately for BTS, they were marketed as a KPop group even though they did not fit that model in many areas, but they had to, being S Koreans. In neo-Confucianism, the actor/singer/dancer is looked upon as a Product that is being trained & paid in order to fulfill a society service, in this case a spectator’s request/expectation of ‘perfect gentleman’ that entertains and tells a story - same as a teacher, engineer, cook, etc. are expected to fulfill their service - the service is the outward projection thru action in sincerity, trustworthiness and benevolence towards the ‘boss’, in the case of KPop, the Fandom. One’s competence and righteousness are being judged based on this outward expression and compliance to those principles, any deviance is viewed as an ‘affront’ towards the society of Fandom, so it is ‘a scandal’! The Western audience culturally has expectation and judges based on ‘one-on-one’: how the artist on stage moves emotionally THE spectator. THE spectator compartmentalizes what they see between the art, talent, presentation/looks and the private person - as an example: Adele, a great composer, fantastic voice and singing talent, good presence on stage - now think of Adele in the KPop world, she never would have made it to become a trainee, much less to debut or have a career - her outward looks, presentation, personal life was totally unpalatable to the east Asian audience conformity. Same issue with the ‘shippers’ - their role is to maintain that conformity in the Fandom so like in old court plays, multiple fantasy stories are being created; in the beginning those stories attracts the local audience and generates the revenue for the company and the artist and are perceived as necessary, but then, after the artist is no longer a teenager and no longer wants to comply on command, the story becomes destructive and no longer needed. But the stories need to be maintained in order to maintain the conformity, so they become a battlefield as each will twist - stretch - create ‘truths’ as proof for the legitimacy of their fantasy …. And anything and anyone perceived to negate, diminish or question that ‘truth’ is also viewed as negating/questioning the story, which means a go against the wellbeing of the loyal audience (Fandom) and the conformity that many call it ‘tradition’ - so any action of the artist, real or perceived, that goes against that conformity, totally negates benevolence, loyalty, trustworthiness, negates their outward expression of the ‘perfect gentleman’, the pillar of a neo- Confucianist society. Today’s clip is about JK following someone that may dance well or maybe created new dance moves, who knows! - ‘they’ must be dating! …. Then, the JiKook shippers are busy too as they cannot see beyond the fact that JK and Jimin sign-up as ‘soldier companion’ program for safety and because they fulfilled few basic requirements: both have tattoos so they would have ended up in the same camp anyway so might as well sign up as 'companion soldiers', is safer, and they did not have to prove to the military commission that they were friends, both being members of BTS for 10 years! But one is with artillery, the other is a cook so yes, for sure they may see each other during the day, at least maybe at a mealtime, but from this to ‘they spend their days together’, 'live together', ‘cannot live without each other’, ‘JK dating Jimin or Jimin dating JK’ (??? Really, that is 2 years in prison in SK) - oh, let’s not forget, JK being ‘bullied’! …. First, the military will not want such a 'hot potato' public relation nightmare on their hands as a JK level of fame being bullied, second, JK is THE cook! ... that means a lot of ‘pay back’ power in the mess hall …. and to the ones that think that being a cook is a demotion, few truths to be considered: the basic training instructor that has power over a soldier's life for only 5 weeks - the cook is the next powerful person in the camp and in daily life of a soldier and the commanders, and he has that power for 17 months! As I mentioned before, I truly hope that more nonwestern subscribers would listen to you Dave as you always bring very specific points to the forefront and explain them with clarity and patience that may help many from that part of the world better evaluate and understand their actions and consequences - but Regardless, Thank you!.
