Just a Few Acres Farm

Just a Few Acres Farm

Күн бұрын

Today is hot and there's a ton of farm work to do. We just deal with it! I have to assemble a new PTO shaft for one of the haybines, and get the haybine and tractor ready to cut hay tomorrow. I also check in with the piglets, and take a look at one of our sows who is due to have her piglets soon. Then, Hilarie and I head down to the field to catch a new calf and castrate, tag & dehorn it. After that, it's time to move the daily pasture fence and see how all the Dexter cattle and calves are doing.
Note:
-We do not offer farm tours
-We do not ship our farm's products
-We do not sell live animals

Hi...Just love how you solve problems so fast....I'm 76 yrs old now I remember how my Grandpa showed me how to go to the tool shed and straighten old nails and fence staples on rainy days...I was about 6 or 7 yrs. He had 160 acres and ran the farm like you do..used mules early on too....never threw anything away...kept fixing and using it !! You're doing GREAT job...Love your Videos. Jim & Sandy in Iowa

Pete, if the old PTO shaft from the haybine is put together like you were using it on the tractor, that's why it failed. The joints are 90 degrees to each other. They need to be in the same plane like on your new shaft.

Thank you for this down to earth channel. I live in Michigan a few hundred mile due east of you. I have five acres and old Farmall tractors. The rebuild of your MD has encouraged me to complete the rebuild of my '53 Super "C" which I had to abandon due to health and financial ressons. My '75 Cub is my main tractor. It has a Woods L 59 belly mower whuch is belly mounted and PTO driven with a #50 roller chain. The best lube I have found for the chain is MOTORKOTE spray lube. Oh! By the way, Work fasenates me. I can sit and watch it for hours.😊

You have a GREAT channel here. I wouldn't be surprised it you hit a million world wide subscribers in the next two years. I just recently took your advice and bought an old NH 256 rake, an old NH haybine (474), and put most of my money towards a good bailer, a case IH 8455. My dad had already bought a NICE tractor 5 years ago for his own use that I also get to use, especially as he gets older. If possible, I'd like to hear more about repairing and/or rebuilding/maintaining the old haybine. Your's is very similar to mine. You inspire me! Also, any thought of a haying operation that provides annual hay production as the main source of income to feed lots, major producers, etc. It would smooth out the high's and low's and allow for future planning. I have 2 head of beefalo, headed to 20 or so, based on artificial insemination. Also have goats that need hay (6), free range chickens (6 now, headed to 25-30 for starters. Possibly changing to pasture chickens based on your videos). Duck eggs are popular here in Missouri as well. Rabbits and 4 giant German Shepherds round out my flock of animals. Would love to hear any management ideas you might have. I have 100 acres, 50 of which are pasture. Currently haying with the equipment you have recommended. Spent $7700 for cutter, rake, and baler. I am going to break even this year or next, which is a great ROI. Thanks for listening and hope you have a suggestion or two. Have a sawmill (small one) that I will use to expand my gateway drug of chickens, eggs, and broilers. Along with the ducks. The annual turkey enterprise is brilliant as well. High demand, high prices, solid returns. Hope to hear from you soon. Thanks, Jason.

I went to a cattle auction a few years ago with a friend. He was there to get a steer to raise as beef. A steer is made by removing a bull's testicles which is usually done with small thick rubber bands. A tool puts it on and a few weeks later...no more balls. A local dairy was selling male cattle barely able to stand on their own and a couple had to be propped back up (spectators giggling). I asked my friend who buys them. He told me sometimes kids buy them to raise for a project but most of them were bought by agents who supply zoos with live food. I could tell you about 'mobile slaughter' but first note: absolute scientific fact that cattle would have long ago been extinct had it not been for humans raising them as food. In the wild, undulates such as cows rarely live more than 4 years, same with dogs in the wild. It can be thought of as a bargain they made.....
