Since everyone's asking for Yamaha- the current Yamaha 678 model SURPRISED me when trying. It's got power and depth! A great step up intermediate flute for the price.

Our school recently got new instruments, and we got new Altus flutes all with a Z cut. Before they came in I went to a flute convention at a nearby university where they had the same model of flute our school was receiving. I had been playing on my Yamaha 462 for about 6 months by then, and after I picked up the Altus I felt like my sound was immediately better. I loved the Altus and couldn’t wait for ours to arrive. A few months later they arrived and I was extremely excited to check mine out. I took it out of the case and set up immediately, and it was not what I expected. I then came back to this video and remembered that there are different headjoint cuts, and I beat myself up because I didn’t see why cut the flute I tried at the convention was. I feel like with the Z cut I have to hold back a lot, especially in the beginning. I don’t know if it’s because I’m coming from a Yamaha, but I feel like the Z cut holds me back and I can’t put as much air into it.

I currently play the flute you just reviewed (but I got mine directly from Japan b/c they offer a closed hole/c-foot version for people like me with bum right shoulders and arthritis in my hands--light and easier to hold) and it came with a C-cut headjoint. I had a hard time with it for the reasons you listed above (plus I've got some nerve damage in my face, so scrunching up my air stream is incredibly difficult to do these days), so I got a Z-cut and stars above, what a difference its made. I've play-tested a lot of flutes and you're right, my 907 chose me. I love, love, love my Altus.

I have an Altus 1107 and I play on the Z cut. In all honesty, I didn't enjoy the regular Z cut but when I got the gold riser added on, it was amazing. The sound was tremendously different. I would recommend trying their headjoints with different riser options.

I'm definitely more of a z-cut player! and I totally agree with you! I have a pearl 765 and it came with their classic cut. But my air capacity grew and it couldn't handle it, so I got a Dana Sheridan headjoint, and it's very similar to the z-cut, and the difference was AMAZING. I didn't have to hold back and its so much more freeblowing than anything and I love it! (it also has a 14k gold riser which makes it even more better for me). I do want a new flute though...pearls can get a bit clunky in their mechanisms after 6 years even with proper maintenance. Well, at least in comparison to muramatsus or Brannens

I'm a HUGE fan of Altus Flutes. I like that their pro models have the d-sharp roller standard. It would nice to include the that roller on all of their flutes. Also something flutists should know about their flutes in their artist series have steel springs whereas their professional series have sp-1 spring which have multiple metals including platinum. Overall, fine flutes. There are a couple of the artists play who play on 807 models (silver plated body and mechanical with silver lip plate and riser).

Hi, Joanna. I had an Azumi Z3 flute that I had to part with. I think that its Z cut headjoint was mostly responsible for the balanced, beautiful, sound I could get from it. Unfortunately I could not manage a flute with a B foot-joint because it made the longer flute weird in my right hand (I have been playing flutes with a C Foot-joint for so many years...) and I couldn't see any advantage in having a low B available at the expense of having to deal with an additional "pinky" key. In Europe one can get an AZ3 with a C foot-joint. Not in the US. So I had to settle for a Yamaha 462, which has a C foot-joint but which has a sound that does not impress me as much as the AZ3. I am currently waiting for a Di Zhao D700 with a C foot-joint which I have ordered from Flutastic.

Would you consider doing a review of the Yamaha 500/600/700 series flutes? I was in need of a new flute recently but was on a fairly restrictive budget (around $3000) and the Yamaha 577 really impressed me! Even though it only has a solid silver headjoint, it performed far better than many all silver flutes I tried and I'm curious what your opinion might be.

The V headjoint seemed clearly the most richly resonant and musical. It just jumped out in quality vs the C headjoint. The C joint seemed to make the instrument sound thinner in tone. The Z headjoint seemed great on the lower and mid-range notes but lost some integrity in the highest. To me then, the selection would be V headjoint. Something in the physics of it just seems like it's giving the air column everything it needs to generate as much quality and balanced out tone as possible, across all octaves. Thanks for the demo!

I think the C sounded the most consistent but maybe more generic? Z seemed a little rough, V wasn't as smooth as the C but maybe more interesting dynamics. Maybe C for classical and V for jazz would work.

My co-section leader bought one through her teacher who is a dealer. I was impressed by her sound and intonation (she's a phenomenal player, but some flute scales make the eb, e, f, and f# difficult) but her new flute instantly rectified it I really was impressed, but I felt it wasn't a good fit for me. I also paid $1500 for my Haynes new (it was a very lucky opportunity because it was a special edition and it was being introduced at the time and people who try my instrument are shocked) she Paid 3 times that price and it wasn't solid silver so I felt it wasn't a good deal, but that's my interpretation. She found her voice and that's what mattered

That one seems close to my Pearl. She was a $3,000 flute that I got (after sale price, coupons, and loyalty discounts) for $1100. I have no idea what cut head joint she has though...I had no idea there were different cuts. I was taught to work with whatever came with the flute, now I have to look it up and see if the specs say what it is...*checks specs online...* Nope, just says sterling silver head joint.

Many flutes only come with one headjoint, so that's not a surprise at all, haha! I myself am looking/saving up for a headjoint for my own professional flute. When it comes to professional flutes, many flutists will use a headjoint from an entirely different brand from their flute's body! ;)

JustAnotherFlutist For what I do, what it came with is perfect. I don't ever plan to play with a symphony or a "professional" orchestra. I probably wouldn't have spent what I did but I couldn't pass up the sweat deal I got. Did the same for my piccolo, almost half price after sale, coupon codes, and the company gave me a loyalty discount since I buy from them all the time.

HI!!!!!!! I am going to perform with my new orchestra for the first time tomorrow and I'm so STRESSED!!!! Our conducter is really scary and she doesn't really like me..... Two of my best friends aren't coming (violinist) and (french horn player) My other best friend playes percussion, and LUCKILY she will be there. I also have a few teachers I'm very close with that are playing. (Violinist, percussionist, trombone player, french horn player and cellist). But even though I have so many great people supporting me, I steel feel hella nervous. I think it's because I practiced with my orchestra ONCE, all the other practices were canceled. Next year in June, we are going to be touring Europe and I'm really excited! If you have any advice on becoming "at home" in your new orchestra or traveling alone or nerves, can you please help me!?!?!?!?!?!?!BTW I love you and your videos!!

I just had a thought...review some flutes on the uber-cheap end...like the ones you can get on Amazon for less than $100. I hear so many people say they want one of those because of the price, and they don't believe they get what they pay for (as I've heard that repair shops won't even touch those). I think it would save people a LOT of heartache and money if there's a review on the uber-cheap knock off flutes. I've seen the brands listed as Glory or Mendini. (For fun, one of the clarinet players in my band bought a red Medini clarinet...it fell apart during the second parade it was used in).

My flute teacher recommended Altus flute. I do not think their flutes are beginner flutes, they sound better than most of the other brand of professional flutes. With that it comes with a price, their 907 model cost as much as a professional flute for brands such as Yamaha. Only recommended for those who are serious into flute and willing to invest. If you aren't playing to make a living I think the cheaper beginner models from Yamaha is better.

Altus is not a beginner flute.. their professional artist grade and they are all handmade.. they have student to intermediate flute in azumi brand, azumi has machine made body and hand made lip plate. a solid silver flute of azumi is still cheaper than the cheapest silver plated altus flute. handmade flutes are really expensive.. but worth it since altus 807 silver plated sounded better than an azumi AZ3 solid silver.

Can you please review some yamaha flutes? Perhaps some 400 series flutes? Cause Yamaha has the best 'non-handmade' intermediate flutes...according to some people (^_^) and I wanna understand why. Thank you XD

In my opinion C-cut sounded best on you (round and full). V Cut is just bully and shrill (on you) and the Z-Cut just doesn't please me. Well the Z-Cut is the typical american cut...

Haha, I was actually filling out the C-cut way too much. The V-cut probably sounds a little shrill because I maxed out the volume on my microphone. I'm still working on upgrading my equipment slowly! :)
