I bought a Sonare SF-7000 as a sophomore in high school and am still playing it ten years later. This is spec-equivalent to 705, but before the line was renumbered. It has served me well in high school wind ensemble, university symphonic band, and now I even get paid to play it! (church gigs and middle school flute teaching). Happy customer.

I would be interested in hearing a comparison & explanation between a Powell Sonare 705, a Powell Signature, and a Powell conservatory model. Or a comparison between the Sonare 705 and whatever pro flute you play on. I wonder what specifically I'd get out of an upgrade. I love being able to get the big "moody" sound. I've always loved the over-dramatic adagio. My main focus is playing in church. I want people to be moved by a musically masterful rendering of Amazing Grace. I'm not trying to set any world speed records for Flight of the Bumblebee.

I played a Sonaré throughout high school and it was my favorite! I've played on an intermediate Yamaha and a Jupiter but both did not compare to it. Currently saving up and hoping to eventually get one of my own. 🤞🏽

I am currently renting that exact same model of Sonare 501, and I'm in love. I am an advancing beginner, and the headjoint is beautiful - I love the embouchure hole - it allows me to play the notes wonderfully in any octave. The keys are amazing. The 3rd octave E is easily accessible, and sometimes the F# sounds clean. I plan on buying it!

Joanna... I just wanted to share an awful awful anecdote that happened yesterday. I had just finished practicing, when after an hour or so, I decided to keep my recorders (you already know I play the recorder haha) but I found the most awful thing ever. It still devastates me to think about it, the image, the feeling, the pang. My precious precious precious boxwood moeck alto that's 20 years old, and NOT MINE, was chewed up, scratched, chunks of wood, chunks of the bell, beak, labium, on the floor. My dog chewed it up. It's my fault for leaving the door open. It was absolutely destroyed. So now I have to break the news to my professor who owns it, and buy him a new recorder for FOUR FIFTY DOLLARS. and im just a poor teenager huhu

Cool selection, I have read/drooled over both of those and wondered if there was a big difference, but the 705 seems like the clear winner once you started with the color and dynamics. Future review requests would be Yamaha professional options or student calibre flute battles.

I play the sonare 705 with a lefreque Added. It has changed my playing. I majored in music in college and played on a student SH gemiengemeinhardt flute all during my college. It was unfortunately all I could afford. It was like playing a brick and actually caused my physical pain. A couple of years ago I got my Powell. I was willing to spend much more but since like you said I don't have a big lung capacity. This flute let me sing. The mechanisms were fluid and sound rich enough for me. I currently only play in a local community band and don't need a lot of color enhancements that a professional flute would bring. On the contrary. It would effect the sound of the band. If I were in an orchestra then I probably would elect for a more colorful tone quality. The lefreque help amplify and balance the intonation of the flute. I love what it does to it. My style of sound may not be to everyone else liking but works for my needs. The price was certifiably right too. I highly recommend the Powell sonare 705 it's a great value. I've played 24k$ flutes and gold and all types. They were just not for me and my needs. I think finding the right flute for you is like buying a car. It's what ever fits your budget needs and style.

You should ask to try the Powell Sonare-705 w/ 9k aurumite headjoint, simply beautiful. That's just me but I feel like the colors are more present, and it's just amazing. Try it sometime if you can. As for the piccolo, try out the Powell Sonare also.

Thank you! I asked you a question about step up flutes a while back and I think you answered all my concerns. I wasn't sure what a step up flute was or what it actually did for your playing - now I see! I got an Azumi AZ3 pretty much by accident a couple of years ago. I have been trying out other flutes because I have some money to buy my "last flute" - I'm never going professional - but I wasn't sure what I should be looking for. Now that I know, even if I got that AZ3 by accident, I see that it DOES work for me better than my student Gemeinhardt and I will keep it for now! If I do buy another flute when I am a better player, I now know more about how to choose it. My AZ3 also has a gizmo key! This was the first time I was told what that key was actually for! Thank you for that too!

So I am trialing the 705 w/ the Auromite headjoint just beautiful resonance! I am not flooding my flute with tons of air typically and I get a big colorful sound w/ vibrato. My only complaint is how heavy it feels. I reordered the 705 w/o the splitE/ C sharp trill to see if its lighter at all… I also am trialing a Haynes q2 Love this one too!! Its effortless to reach high register and the mechanism is so very smooth. Its a VERY hard choice!!! Ugghh very polar opposite flutes IMO

I am 63 years old and I would love to up grade my 1993 armstrong 104 flute.I originally was looking at the 601 c foot.I liked that it was very free blowing for my age, and if god willing, I would like to play flute for many more years.Is the aurumite 9k head joint free blowing .Also is this head joint plated thanks

I love your videos, you seem really experienced and I was wondering if you could help me find the right flute for me, i am looking for an intermediate level flute with an offset g key with a b foot, good quality but AFFORDABLE, up until now I played on my moms old student level flute, but due to its age and poor treatment over the past 30+ years it is now broken and I would rather just use the money on a better flute than to repair one that is no longer allowing me to grow. Do you have any suggestions as far as makes and models and where to get them from?

awesome review! Quick unrelated question tho. What do you do after being bedridden for a few days and come back to a shitty tone? (sorry about that word, but it's the truth it's absolute crap) Because even knowing that 'that' was going to happen seeing exactly how bad it got was really discouraging. Especially after I've made all this progress that just went to... let's say it went somewhere toilet adjacent. So my question for you is what do you do mentally after a short hiatus? Considering I don't play the flute or really any wind instrument. But I guess some of your viewers would enjoy what you do practically after a hiatus with your flute... embouchure exercises I imagine (learn that word in your channel 😂)

Could you do a video about managing musical groups? In my case, I am a principal chair, pit orchestra director, private flute teacher, flute choir director, and composer. Sometimes it's overwhelming to have all these responsibilities, and when I begin to get a bit on edge the group thinks that I think they aren't doing well and as a result, we sound meh. I would really appreciate some advice on how to juggle everything without crashing.
@JustAnotherFlutist
@JustAnotherFlutist 7 жыл бұрын
Ohhh, yes, I'll definitely add this on the list! I'll first say here that it's important to be open with your groups and let them know when you're feeling tired (you don't need to explain more than that--people just need to know your current state of being). That way, they won't take things too personally. It's all about open communication!

Would you recommend this flute or a gemeinhardt?

Depends on the level of the flute and what level you're playing at! Always remember, the flute chooses the flutist, not the other way around ;)

Did you know that if you use your pinky finger to press the B key and the C key on the foot joint it will act the same as a Gizmo?

BroulfLeFlautist this is what James Galway does. He uses flutes that do not have a gizmo.
