Great review! I actually bought this exact same watch 118238, white dial w/ roman numerals to commemorate a very successful business transaction in 2011. At the time the Rolex the advertising pitch that got to me was "A Crown for Every Achievement". It's the best in my collection and my favorite one to wear. Keep up the great work..

I own a Day date 36 mm in yellow gold with champaign dial and diamond hour markers. I bought it new in 1992 and paid 12.000 $ for it. I wear it every day and I love it still. For me it is a perfect watch.

This watch really doesn't make "sense" at any age. It's ridiculously expensive as are all Rolexes. Great, well built watches but now just for people that have more money than sense and/or any knowledge of horology.

Hi Guy, great watch and great video. With a whole range of Hamilton watches in my collection I rarely feel the need to put on a Rolex, but having seen your video I took out my 36mm datejust with jubilee bracelet. Same Roman dial, without the day, which I think makes the dial a bit cluttered on a smallish watch, though I agree it’s very nicely done and clear on this model. I haven’t worn it for over a year. The second hand started going when I lifted it up. I gave it 40 half turns on the winder and set it off. Put it on my new timegrapher and it gave brilliant readings. A rate of 0 s/d, amplitude of 298 degrees, with a beat error of 1.0ms, at 28,800. The lines were perfectly parallel and unbroken. I decided to keep it on for a few days : ) keep up the good work. ( please accept my deep and heartfelt sympathies for your recent loss)

Great review. Thank you for that. I have one of these with a white face. It is solid rose gold with an Oyster bracelet rather than a presidential band, and it has a smooth Bezel rather than fluted. It's one heck of a lot of bling but that tends to ratchet back the look a bit. I too love the watch. I tried on a 40 mm and it was just too much. I have a 7 inch wrist and this size , with all of its wrist presents, looks good on Me Too!.

Please note that not all Rolex watches come with sapphire crystals. I own a 70’s era Rolex Date 34mm that has haselite crystal. The crystal is original, and I have been told that some collectors prefer that type of crystal for to the vintage look that it gives the timepiece.

About bracelet I’ve listened that part few times and still am not sure why you said it is not available on (lady)datejust models.(if I truly understand exact thing you said)I can say according to Rolex President bracelet is also available for those models as long as the material of watch is precious metal.

What really upsets me is most shoot almost all of them want to sell the watch without the extra watch links that come with it because they can sell them for a couple Grand. Always ask for those when pusrchasing a Rolex. Does this store include those links?

Hi Guy! In terms of precision, the 2018 iteration (the 25th anniversary) of Omega Seamaster Professional 300 is METAS-certified, witch is +/- 2 sec per day, an equivalent of Rolex's superlative chronometer certified.

Guy, thank you very much for make me to read the manuals (RTFM :)), although I should have done this before writing my comment. Now, when it comes to the actual manuals, while i respect both manufacturers - Rolex and Omega (like i also respect many other manufacturers), i was unable to find any official document which would stipulate the procedure of certification of Rolex watches. Again, while i apreciate the history, heritage, performance and beauty of Rolex brand/watches, the fact that they don't provide the procedure of certification sows the seed of doubt in my mind. I other hand, i was able to find on the Omega's official site not only the description of the cycles of certification, but also the link to the METAS's official site (by clicking on "Standards by METAS" at "Certification" point). This button is linked to an official document "Requirements for the certification of mechanical watches [METAS N001, version 1.1.". Needless to say that i prefer Omega's aproach of attitude towards it's customers. P.S. I think every watch enthusiast should read this document because it explains alot. For example, on page 14 - Accepance criteria, it says that average daily precision Pj (indicates by how much time the tested clock is fast (>0) or slow (

I'm only 5' 5" tall. Not a big guy. So my 36 fits fine. If I was to wear the 40mm I might as well wear a clown costume and walk up and down Broadway and say hay everybody, look at me. I like the white dial since there is some contrast. Also the Roman numerals. I swim with the DD every time I do my lap swimming. A good video, watched it several times. It's june 2021 and the watch is at the service centre in NY. I did cry the first few nights after turning my watch over to Rolex. I'm fine now.

Beautiful watch. Good news. You don't has to spend 30k. You should be able to get that model for about 17k in great shape! Also, the DAY-DATE makes a great everyday watch. I used my 18238 daily for 15 years. Now I'm rotating two Grand Seikos. The only reason I stopped wearing the DAY-DATE is mine has the silver dial and like you said it's not legible. My 60 year old eyes can't read it in low light without my reading glasses.

My father in law owns the larger version of this design (yellow gold, white roman numeral dial). It's his every day watch. When he was in hospital for a week, he asked me to keep it safe, but wear it, until he got out. We both share a love of fine watches and have a few in our collections. What a week that was. I only wore it around the house and when I went to visit him but that was enough to get a very deep appreciation for a watch of this level. I prefer the classic 36mm to the 42. It was HEAVY. But a good heavy. Gold feels so much different than steel. You can almost feel the softness of it as it compares to stainless. Maybe its a mental thing. Who knows. I snapped a couple pics on wrist for posterity before giving it back. What an experience though. Not sure I could pull this off as an everyday watch. You almost need to be a legendary golfer, captain of industry or a world leader to wear this convincingly :-) Somehow he does though and he's a physical trainer so it must just be the way you carry yourself. I really enjoyed the review! Keep up the great content!

With regards to the president bracelet comments starting at 18:00 you mention that you believe “ . . . you can’t get it on datejust or any other watch” & “This bracelet is unique to this watch”. I inherited my Dad's 18K 1503 Date with a serial number that refers to a manufacture date of 1968. This is a 34mm watch and it has a president bracelet. Just thought I'd share as I have googled images of this model but have never come across one with a president bracelet.

I can understand that. It’s sort of how I felt about the 39mm Explorer. Not a bad watch but I didn’t love it and it was too much money to have tied up and not being worn.

You mentioned that you would like a watch like this but $31,000 was a little much for you to consider. I would go for the previous model the 18238 which at a little more than half the price is a bargain and retains most of the features of this watch. Some collectors even prefer the previous model.

Yellow Gold is sufficiently showy that 36mm is perfect, demonstrating the art within the design, whereas 40mm could look TOO much in the face and look like a fashion watch to the uninitiated.

So, I have a ´Jüles Jürgensen, Since 1740´´, not gold, because I could not afford it, but it ´izz´absolutely lovely and my favorite watch, but I am confused. Since JJ was founded in 1740, didn ´t JJ originate this President Day Date appearance, not back then, but at least, `before ´ Rolex made it’s iteration ? I honestly think the JJ appearance looks better, especially the `crown ´ underneath the Day. What are your comments ?

I'm pretty sure Omega's METAS certified timepieces are a step-up in accuracy than Rolex's COSC certs.

The Seiko caliber 9R 65 Spring Drive movement is accurate ±1 second per day (±15 seconds per month) and has a power reserve of 72 hours. The technology is a bit different but it is still a mechanical watch.

I love spring drive, bit it’s not remotely fair to compare to a watch regulated by Swiss lever escapement. The spring drive uses a quartz oscillator to regulate accuracy.

It’s pretty easy. You look at it, wear it, compare it to others you’ve experienced, form opinions, produce a video reviewing it, then return it.

Perhaps the most well-known form of this abuse is "wardrobing" or "free renting" - in which the person makes a purchase, uses the product(s), and then returns the merchandise. i serve people in palm beach who wear gold Rolex watches. the point of wearing one (from what i can tell) is reaching a financial level in which something like this is casual. "what ever, fuck it. who cares" is their mentality.

I don't like roman on small dials. Also I don't get why they are backwards. Not hands are looking for the time but me. I hate it in every watch. Also in the case of day complication like this particular day date XI indeks looks ridiculous.

Usually being a girl in the watchworld is a disadvantage. But gold watches? Women often wear gold watches. I wouldnt feel awkward at all wearing this at all. One of my grails honestly, compared to the heavily bejeweled women watches, this isnt gaudy, its timeless.

Gold usually does look better on the ladies, seems a bit unfair. I love looking at this watch but I just don't know if I could wear it regularly without feeling self conscious about an all gold watch. Maybe it's all in my head?

I also see the trend that with guys the older they get, the more comfortable they get with wearing gold so maybe that will happen to you as well? Idk. It may just not be your style. Like I love looking at dive watches, but I don't think I'd wear one as a matter of style, yknow?
