I can't help but chuckle through the whole thing. You did a great job, yet proved how much of a rabbit hole in time consumption it is playing with amps and effects. Even the sounds you said sound "too ___" sounded cool, and reminiscent of some song. I frequently find myself never settling on the ideal sound for a song. So many choices for one song to my ear. Every time it seems like a one-off. :D

Great video Justin. I started with a Katana, worked out what I like so got a Princeton 65RI and hook it up with pedals for dirt! Highly recommend something like this to start out with.

I got a Yamaha THR10II, and since I got it, my practice time is so much more enjoyable than with what I had before (Multifx-Pedals, Spark40). Having options is great, but getting a good tone that inspires you to play more is *gold*. I found myself dialing in tones with the previous options instead of practicing. Getting a good tone with the THR is a matter of seconds. I heard it's quite the same with the Katana.

My teacher made me buy a yamaha THR10II and i like it a lot, there are a lot of amp simulation on this, most sound good, but theres one in particular, that sounds so bad but i still love it it sounds like running very high voltage through a toaster

Justin I didn't know for a while that it's not the guitar you have but it's the amp you got. I bought the boss katana artist MKii not too long ago and wow the sound I get out of my LP now and also from my Telecaster and my SG was mind blowing. I haven't even explored it on the internet yet from Boss. You do a great job on your videos and I think you for it.

Out of all the amps I have, I prefer my 1970'ish Peavey Revolution amp. I has everything you need in the tone department, for playing gig's and big stage. I'm surprised it did become more popular. But the amp I have that has the best reverb is my 1960'ish Sun Concert Lead amp.which was my first amp I used for gigging.

I have a Vox Mod 3 G2, which is like a portable Vox Amp emulator, in a sweet little Combo package, which I've used for practice for a few years now. It sound quite good for practicing, if you're on a budget, IMO. Thanks for the video, Justin! - David M. Kelly, USA

I have an ancient Boss GT-PRO rack mounted fx which imitates different amps as well as adding fx. I play a nylon strung acoustic guitar through it.

I could be wrong, but I understood that the presence control on some amps, including Marshalls I believe, interacts somehow with the power amp, and/or is a separate part of the circuit from the bass, middle and treble controls. When you took it out completely, it took some mids with it, in a way the treble didn't.

I've found the little Mustang Micro headphone amp to be a fantastic beginner amp. Lots of great sounds, not a load of options to get lost in, Bluetooth support for backing tracks and lesson videos. And cheap.

Hi Justin, I really believe your videos are the best around for guitarists old and young. I fall into the former category ha ha. I have a request if I may. I noted the Lazy J amp behind you and as I also own one I wondered if you could demo the amp to help guide users of the achievable tones from clean warm through to nice blues tones and rock etc. I do hope you consider my suggestion as I for one need a guide.

@@stuminnis4050 I now have 6 amps and many more guitars however I always think about the ones that got away. I sold a heavily modded telecaster in 1996, I miss that guitar every day. The only saving grace is that it is now in the hands of the guy that modded it in the first place.

I have a boss Katana wich can almost sound like a fender when you hit the variation knob. I also have a Blackstar silverline wich can emulate different preamp tubes like KT88, EL34, 6V6, 6L6, EL84,KT66. KT88 is a Marshall major and 6V6 must be a Fender amp, 6L6 is a Mesa Boogie and EL84 must be a Vox ac30. When you turn the knob it really changes the sound. I personaly love the EL34 then i get a Marshall 80s type tone. If i play heavy metal i like the 6L6. When i come to the EQ ive learned to turn up the mids a bit otherwise it gets to muddy or the sounds doesnt comes through, you cant hear the notes being played. If i do want to scoop the mids when i play I compensate with a little presence and treble....but I gotta be careful with the presence.....it can be overpowering and make it too sharp sounding. The katana's treble is very sensetive so i dont really miss the presence....(I have the 50mk2).

Thanks for this informative video tutorial Justin. I have an unpowered Kemper “toaster” and am looking for advice on what is the best medium for transferring the Kemper output to a room in your opinion. I have a powered PA system, an Evolve EV50, 8 inch studio monitors and a couple of amps. None of them make the profiles sound as I hear on the various videos I have seen so your opinion would be really appreciated.

BIAS FX 2 has been excellent for me as a beginner! I can easily get any sound I want with all of the different options, and if I'm unsure of how to achieve that sound the presets always sound great! Paired with a Scarlett solo it has been money well spent in my opinion.

Very nice video! One thing I should mention though, which isnt talked about but that is essential for beginners (like me - I found out the hard way) buying their first amp, is the wattage or output of the amp. Most of us new at guitar playing that want to play electric, will do so at home. 20 watt is way (way -WAY) too loud. Even 5 watts can be very loud. Just turn down the volume, you say. Apparently it doesn't work that way. A lot of the sounds you "have in you head" will not surface at lower volumes and will just be hidden in your amp. Especially tube amps where the point almost is to push the tubes into breaking up. There are amps out there that have a dial where you can decimate the output and that way it will will be a lot easier to experiment with overdriven sounds without being stuck in everlasting clean. Boss Katana MKII 50 has a 0,5W output (wich is plenty loud). Orange Rocker 15 has dials for 15, 7, 1 and 0,5watts , and e.g. the Blackstar HT-20R MKII can be lowered from 20 to 2watts. For me personally this is a dealbreaker (unless you want to buy an attenuator).

Finally someone has posted what I think! I love Justins posts, but I think he has this completely wrong: when I started I found these profiling amps much too complicated, and needed a really simple amp. Even 6 years down the line, I can understand the attraction of amps like the Kemper and Blackstar, but I find the amps I bought originally, too punchy. I have an orange 60 watt for gigs but at home and for practice the 20 watt was far too punchy. I got really abused when I made this point some time ago, so if anyone gets angry about my comment I will delete it.

@@roberteastwood9886 Come on, please don't delete a comment just because your opinion may offend someone. Anyway, I feel the same way. I have a Line6 spider V 60. Great amp but sometimes I feel like there 's way too much going on. For the price the amount of amps and fx you get is actually great than going out and even buying single amp and individual pedals. However it can just get way too overwhelming very quickly in my opinion. I still have it as well as an orange crush 35rt and am thinking of getting a blackstar ht5. I tested out the blackstar and even at 0.5w it's very loud.

Hey Justin one thing you didn't mention is where you are using your amp. If you're in your bedroom even at loud volumes it will sound much different than when you bring it to your buddy's garage and even more so if you are playing outside in the open. Always test your gear wherever you are performing even if you know how you expect it to sound in your practice space.

How come people playing guitar at home buy guitar amps/PA’s when they could probably just plug the guitar into a set of high quality stereo speakers? I’m not fully understanding why people need a guitar amp or PA. Can high quality speakers not handle the audio coming out of the guitar, or is there another reason?

Hi Justin. I really appreciate your videos. One comment I would like to make is - Why start with so much distortion and O/D? Why not start with a clean tone so that we can hear what the guitar and amp really sound like, and then add the Distortion and O/D later. I notice on KZfaq that so many guitarists demonstrating equipment very rarely demo a clean sound. I'm a "Wrinkly Rocker" and a Shadows fan so possibly biased!! LOL

Hi Justin. I recently watched your interview with katana preset guru Jura Nery. I listened to a bunch of his fender amp presets on his page and they sounded awesome. However I only have the katana 50 which has a basic 4 ohm speaker and when I watched a few katana speaker upgrade videos, upgrading the speaker made the sounds a lot more ‘valvey” anyway. I assume on his demos, Juea is using his katana artist with the waza craft speaker. So im not sure if spending £30;on his presets will achieve the desired results. As the 50 only has a 4ohm speaker so options for a speaker upgrade are limited. Jura obviously knows what he’s doing, so I’m tempted but would hate to be let down by my speaker. Have you tried his presets on a 50 watter? Am I going to get that awesome valve sound out of my 50? Is there a 4 ohm speaker that would be a significant improvement on the standard katana 50 speaker? I love my am it’s compact,light and versatile but if I can’t get a decent approximation of a blues junior type sound out of it I’ll have to upgrade Ps love your vids.thanks for helping me on my guitar journey from open mic acoustic strummer to band leader / strat slinger over the years

I've got a small Fender and it's mystifying how many tone adjustments and presets are possible. I'd pay $$$ for a guide that explains how to get close to a particular sound that matches the song I'm trying to play. e.g. I spent probably an hour trying to get the Oasis sound (think Morning Glory for example) and am still not happy. It's not possible to get it exact because NG uses a different guitar and different amp but how to get it close?

Nice vid but I don't understand it. I bought a budget Boss amp / cab simulator (IR-200) to try to get to terms with it. My understanding is that there's no point running it through a cab because different speakers = different sound. If it's only for studio work surely you would use the profiles in the DAW you have. I'm obviously missing the point so if anyone can put me right I'll be grateful.

Just to confuse everyone. There are basically two settings you need - one for home use and practice and one for playing loud in a band. The home/solo setting is way more bass and treble with a sort of scooped-out middle. Think the classic Deluxe Reverb sort of sound. But in a band, it's almost the opposite - what sounds pretty lack lustre at home is perfect for a band situation where you need to find your home in the mix. The bass is lost because you have a bass player and the top is lost in the cymbals and percussion. Just to make it more difficult the keys and vocalist are pretty much just where you want to be as well. So you'll need to find a frequency that fits around all that or you'll just not be heard or heard badly (too loudly). Get those mids up a lot. My current band setting on a DV Mark Raw Dawg is unbelievably extreme - Bass 2 Mids 8 Treble 2. The Raw Dawg is very bassy and has a top edge that's just too harsh - so that's what drives those settings. It does have a set of pedals going into it, but you can see how some settings just seem all wrong - - but in a band - just right!! There's a world of difference playing a solo jazz job and playing lead and rhythm in a rock band.

This has been always a bit of mystery for me regarding modelers. For practicing or just playing with Kemper, how do you get the sound? Meaning headphones, power amp+ cab, studio monitors? Edit: saw Justin answering this question in other comment :)

kemper would go either into a mixer or directly into studio monitors. You can use it with headphones too.

@@cirisirpula152 yes of course you could. However combo amps are voiced for the speaker they have and would color the sound. Equally cabs also would change the sound. When using a profiler you'd use studio equipment to be as close to the sound kemper produces as you could. But yes in theory you can output to anything with aux or trs inputs.

@@capsel22 Makes sense. A lot of people are saying you need guitar cab to get the air moving and thus have more realistic experience. With studio monitors you are kinda losing that i guess. I just have a spark so I dont have experience on big cabs.

@@justinguitar Thanks Justin. I’m a bit confused because i recently sold my Helix after months of frustration trying to get sounds I like using my (decent) monitors (Yamaha HS8). It was only later I realised maybe i’d have been happier using a cab of some sort instead of the monitors. However, you are clearly getting great sounds via monitors. 🤯

Interesting thread, I got the Katana, thinking about upgrading to Kemper, but would potentially keep the Katana as a powered cab? But given the cab simulation in the Kemper I was wondering if studio monitors would work better, but then you say profiler+studio monitors are not great?

@@eeervin3 Hi, I’m prob not a good source of advice on this! I’m sure people get great sounds that way - but i did wonder if the ‘flat’ tones if my monitors were a factor in my frustration. Then there’s the Helix - which I suspect is more ‘fiddly’ than the Kemper. I have a katana & like it - I will prob try a Kemper at some stage.

The power head adds a 600 watt amp to the head so you can plug into a cabinet.

I have a Positive Grid spark that has dedicated settings for bass, acoustic and various electric guitar settings. I haven't tried acoustic, but the bass setting is pretty good for bass guitar, and the amp itself is incredible for experimenting with different effects/amp Sims etc. I have barely scratched the surface of what it can do, and probably never will, but it is very easy to use (even more so than Katana, which I own as well but gets very little use now. Situation would be reversed if I was gigging though - the Katana (50w combo) is great for that. Spark does not have the power. BTW Spark doubles as a really good Bluetooth speaker for streaming music. (I am not endorsed by Positive Grid. If you ever heard my ham fisted playing you would know why...)

The Boss Katana series treats electric and acoustic both well, but I’ve never tried plugging a bass into it.

I rather economic way to test out various Amp models and settings is the Fender Mustang Micro Headphone Amp ... around €100 and great for practicing ... with a huge WAF (Woman Acceptance Factor) 😉

If you keep it rather cheap to start with, It gives you the chance to explore a LOT of sounds for a small amount of money. A multi-effect was exactly how I got to learn which effects I like and which I don't.
