The backing vocals are also Morrissey. Backing vocals on the album are credited to Ann Coates a reference to the Ancoates area of Manchester.

The Smiths were so unique. Their musicianship was top notch and Morrissey's lyrics were always grimly amusing. I would heartily recommend "The Headmaster Ritual" , a bona fide masterpiece which has a driving guitar and pulsating drumwork, and anyone who felt like a misfit at school would identify with the storyline.

One of the best singles of the 80’s IMHO, kicking off side two of one of the best albums of the 80’s. You nailed it Justin, this is one of Johnny Marr’s masterpieces

I always thought that this song was Morrissey showing some self-awareness about the trouble his big mouth could get him into but, judging by that quote you found, maybe not. Nevertheless, a fun song. Glad you mentioned Rourke's great bass playing, which sometimes gets overlooked among all Marr's guitar wizardry.

Honestly that's why I always thought that Rourke and Joyce deserved more than their meager percentages. Unless Marr sat there and taught him the basslines, Andy (and Mike) both brought so much to the songs. All one has to do is listen to the songs Rourke worked on for Moz's solo career to know how quality he was, too.

My fickle fingers have replaced the bull-frog mouth in my senior years. Morrissey and Marr's writing brings us to laughs and cheers, while the sarcasm of it all, leads to deeper fears. All in all it is still music to my ears! Peace & joy and beers for your tears!

I love this band, one of the best of the '80s. This song is a perfect example of Marr's musical brilliance combined with Morrissey's ambiguous (and darkly humorous) lyrics. He calls her "sweetness" as he's trying to apologize by saying he was just joking about violent threats he made. Women don't forgive or forget. Their song 'Girlfriend in a Coma' is very similar in tone and equally funny. The 2017 re-release of this album comes with demos and 4 b-sides from the singles: 'Rubber Ring', 'Asleep', 'Money Changes Everything' and 'Unloveable'. For me 'Asleep' is the most devastating song they made. I hope you include these 4 songs with the album reaction.

Way back when....my buddy was a DJ in a great club in Toronto. He'd play the intro to this and the dance floor would get packed, then he'd mix in Barracuda by Heart, then back to The Smiths. It was always about 3 a.m. and it was always brilliant.

Bass, drums and guitar are all top notch here. And Morrissey to top It off. The were my favorite contemporary group in the eighties and this album, this single specifically. Great reaction, as always! You’re awesome JustJP.

Love the track. Johnny is superb. Morrissey used to wear a hearing aid and glasses that he didn't need. The hearing aid mentioned was another way to compare himself to Joan of Arc.

Like your new commentary format during the music. Yeah, played _Queen_ _Is_ _Dead_ album constantly when it came out, and vividly recall this track as being one of the standouts (along with the title track). Always wondered at Morrissey's ability to rapid-fire through short series of words while enunciating so clearly. The timbre of the backing vocals reminded me of Cyndi Lauper - interesting to learn it was Morrissey!

@JustJP Why have you removed me from my channel? I made one comment knocking the Subhumans album, and probably rightly got a lot of flak for it. I apologised to one guy which reached him, album he didn't reply. I've just received another comment criticising the same album and i'm blocked. I imagine you saw my apology, explaining my deep concerns that i had contracted all the symptoms. Yesterday, thank God, i was given the all clear, but before i knew this it petrified me and effected my communication with everyone. It manifested itself in the form of anger. If you've already seen this explanation already and still gone ahead and banned me, surely that goes against your polite and easy going nature. Justin, i am not dying, and surely you can imagine how i am now feeling. Please return me to your channel, as i don't think i have it in me to offend anybody ever again. I've gone from deep despair and darkness to a second chance at life. Please see it in your heart to let me back into the fold. I have no bad feeling left in me, and this would be reflected in the chance of future participation. Peace JP, and please consider what i have been through. ❤

Haven´t heard this song in a while and I have to say that this pitched up voice ( as basic as this tec is/ was), was really well done. And yeah, guilty of being a bigmouth myself, who loves to melt other peoples hearing aids. And the term "cancelled" springs to mind, when it comes to the chorus line.

The Smiths were my first love in music. I like the Joan of Arc and hearing aid references. You should hear "Head On" by The Jesus and Mary Chain from 1989.

That's an electronic harmonizer. It's probably Morrissey using the harmonizer.

They actually slowed the tape down and he recorded a harmony and then it was sped up when they put the tape at normal speed, the old fashioned trick.

It's just Morrisey's voice sped up. Edit - OK, I said this during the music so you saw it at the end. Regardless, still one of their 5 best tracks.

I ❤ this. Joan of Arc heard God, perhaps through her walkman and hearing aids? I understand being so angry you feel like bludgeoning the perpetrator so The Smiths always make sense to me. If you've been violated/abused you might understand.

Loved it Love it. Here's my 'big mouth' telling you the secret of the incomparable Chris Rea who has evaded your great reaction channel Justin. Britian's enduring songwriting, gravel voiced, slide guitar master (all 3). 'Your Warm and Tender Love' from his No.1 1989 Album Road To Hell perhaps a nice starting point. Putting it our there cos he's loved world over but not known all over.

his bigmouth getting him into trouble is exactly what the song is about for those wondering. People have a tendency to overanalyze his songs because of his reputation. Most of his songs are tongue in cheek. The chipmunk voice was added because Morrissey nearly busted his belly laughing when it was added as a prank

At this time, Morrissey had already a pretty poor relationship with the UK press - they hounded him really, this was his response. Oh, and yes, moving to the US as soon as he could.

I'm sure someone will tell you, NME is New Musical Express. There were tons of publications about music in the UK since the fifties. That one was a weekly and may still be online these days. Like our 24 hour News Channels, to keep an audience, they tended to be quite sensational. Every band was at war with each other, and there could only be clearly good and bad individuals in each band. The public ate it up!

I suspect that the lyrics about wanting 'to smash every tooth in your head' and 'you should be bludgeoned in your bed' are not literal things he said but exaggerations of things he may of said to which people overreacted as he had said what the lyrics say. I hope it makes sense. I can't explain it any better at this time of night lol.

Morrissey often has the themes of alienation and misplacement in his lyrics for The Smiths. "There's The Light That Never Goes Out" is a prime example. Morrissey got some stick about the lyrics, which he apologised as a bad choice and lack of judgement. He was critisized for not possibly knowing about how Joan Of Arc felt and putting her mission in mere loudmouth in trouble category. The hearing aid was also cause of anger. I personally think that it might have been a bit odd reference to the voices she claimed to hear.

Because recently you've posted Marillion too... Take _"Forgotten Sons"_ (from "Script of a Jester's Tear"), the passage starting at about 3 minutes mark, and compare it with Smiths' _"Barbarism Begins at Home"_ (from "Meat Is Murder") --sounds quite close to each other, bass parts in particular.

Much like Randy Newman or some Steely Dan, Morrissey's making a point of writing himself right OUT of listener sympathy. It's not about you liking the character in the song, so much as he is just straight up venting and you're experiencing him as a sort of emotional spectacle. You can like the spectacle and still be like 'I don't think me and this guy are going to be friends'. I still like the music, but I don't think I'd be friends with Morrissey :)

The thing about the Walkman melting… I think is just being ironic, flippant, kind of poking fun at the seriousness of the situation she’s in. Possibly the whole song is about this - how loud, brash people say things to shock… but underneath it’s all a big joke to get a reaction. Maybe a touch of Andy Kaufman spoofing going on there…

@@ljones2087 It was supposed to be Kirsty MaColl but due to be unavailable, Morrissey did it himself and pitched voiced the vocals. It is credited in the album credits as Ann Coates.

Here's another example of Morrissey's "brilliance": Early in his solo career he was doing a concert at UCLA when, about 4 songs in, he announced to the audience "You don't have to stay in your seats. They can't make you!" and with that, they rushed the stage and the sound went out. Concert over! Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

Still a bit conflicted about this one, back in the day they did produce some great songs and were the voice of the outsiders but nowadays Morrisey turns into a more loathsome creature every time he opens his mouth and seems determined to antagonise the people who were his fans.

With the Smiths, I can separate the art from the artist as the art was at least 50% created by Johnny Marr, and Joyce and Rourke were no slouches either. Morrissey as a solo performer, though? Nah. He’s ruined that legacy.
