Making a jute twine knife handle. An idea I got from another KZfaq video some three years ago. I finally gave it a try. Though I still have a few kinks to work out, it looks pretty good.
Here's the video that inspired me to give this a try. • Video

Hey John I like it and the knife fans are all in agreement, great build. The jute makes it look rustic and high tech all in one. You where given many good suggestions. In years past project using epoxy, the only thing I can suggest is to try some higher end epoxy with a slower set resin and blowing air on it will help with the air bubbles. A slow set resin with a hair dryer on low speed should work. Try wrapping smaller projects, maybe like a screw driver/ice pick etc. Your on to something there, stick with. We will be waiting to see how you make out.

Interesting process. This is just my 2 cents worth about the air bubbles. I liked your use of the bent wire "control handle"(?) to direct the string while wrapping. I was surprised you stopped using it so soon. It also worked to control the amount of liquid on the string as well as placement. I think forming an O rather than a U would give more control. Wrapping a little tighter might eliminate them as well.

Turned out nice. A couple of years ago - having not seen the video you were talking about - I kind of independently came up with a similar idea. I had found a pairing knife at Goodwill that I thought would make a good outdoors neck knife or 'patch' type knife but the handles - which were slick plastic - were cracked. I busted them all the way off and tried making a handle by wrapping it with orange bank line and, with each layer of line, brushing it with some glue I have that is almost like epoxy when it dries. I thought a bright orange handle would be good for such a knife. The concept worked but unfortunately the tang was a little odd shaped and so I couldn't get the line to lay on in a way that it looked really good. Still made a useful handle, though. Now that I see what you have done I am thinking maybe my idea wasn't crazy, after all - I just need to try it with a knife that has a tang shape that is better suited for it.
@JohnCapps
@JohnCapps 7 жыл бұрын
JAB 619 I can't speak for the glue, but with epoxy you can build it up, and shape it to whatever design you like regardless of the tang. I did follow the layers of twine on this knife , but it wasn't necessary.

Hit on an idea to combat the shrink. Instead of wrapping the twine directly around the handle, wrap it around a section of dowel or something. Then you can cut down the ends and drill out the center like any regular block for a hidden tang.

Tried my first surfboard resin and linen micarta scales on my grandpa's J Robison Kephart model back in the sixties. Don't know what my mom was more angry about, using her best linen pillow case or firing it off next to the intake vent for the AC system. The whole house smelled like a glue factory...during her bridge club meeting with the country club ladies. After sanding. Mix up a little gloss resin and paint it on with a brush. Fills in the holes and you can sand with 400 600 and polish. ATB Greg

This would also make a great gear shift knob, hatchet handle, or you could wrap the twine around a wooden dowel and then cut the material into knife scales. I am thinking about trying clear or tinted epoxy and some colored yarn. Or a mix of colored yarn. Should make a sweet twisted micarta.

@tgray505
@tgray505 Жыл бұрын
Slow down your wrapping. Thats where the airbubbles are coming from. After each layer of wrap,wear rubber gloves and squeeze the handle tightly,then another layer of wrap,then squeeze,and so on till desired thickness is reached. Sand handle to desired shape. If you find air holes,dont worry. Once handle is shaped,wash it thoroughly with Dawn dish soap and hot water,making sure you clean dust out of any air holes you find. When dried,give it a good heavy coat of resin only. I usually allow several days to cure between steps. Finally, sand it by hand,course to whichever texture you desire. If desired,you can polish with a buffing wheel and compound.

I’ve done everything but this. I really like it. My question is,,,after boiled linseed oil dries it gets dull looking. How does one make BLO shine. I’ve used BLO on wood and have never gotten a shine and after awhile I have to re-apply the BLO. GREAT JOB BROTHER. THUMBS UP and a New Subscriber.
@JohnCapps
@JohnCapps 4 жыл бұрын
BLO is not the best option. It does dry out. I should’ve mixed up more resin, filled the holes, then sanded again. I’m not sure what the best finish coat would be. Maybe something containing poly urethane. I have had good results with Birchwood Casey “Tru-Oil” gunstock finish.

I did sand through the layers on the first knife. With all the fibers running the same direction, it's hardly even noticeable. I know the handle shape of the smaller knife is boring , but it feels perfect in hand. I want to do a lot more experimenting with these handle materials.

I hear ya. A good test for the perfect handle shape would be to whittle out just one bow drill set with the knife, if there's no hand fatigue or blisters then the handle is shaped perfectly. Mora's got it figured out, exactly... I think. Thank you my friend!!!

Michael Hotchkiss you could do it with gloves. I figured it would be much less messy, and faster to do it with a drill. With the fiberglass resin you have about 8 minutes working time. I you're using gloves it would be best to use a slower curing resin.
