TOEFL Writing Task 2 - Score 24+
I scored 30/30 in TOEFL Writing and I show you how to write an essay for a preference question in the independent task (task 2). We are going to write a TOEFL essay that gets you a score above 24. I show you which structure your essay should have and what you should do to get a high TOEFL Writing score. I will walk you through the whole process of writing an essay for task 2 of TOEFL Writing step by step. Getting a high score in the TOEFL Writing task 2 is no magic guys, you can absolutely do this!

FYI
The examples I use in the video are made up by me.
1) Note-taking
Before you start writing the independent essay for the task 2 in TOEFL Writing, write down a few keywords. This helps you focus on the question which is really important because you only get a high TOEFL Writing score if you answer the question directly. Further, by taking notes in task 2 in TOEFL Writing you ensure that you do not forget your reasons and examples while writing.
2) Introduction
The introduction must contain all points that are necessary to tell the reader what you are talking about in your TOEFL essay. Remember to rephrase the words given in the prompt. Rephrasing is important because this shows ETS that you know a lot of English words and that you can use them correctly. Thus, this improves your TOEFL Writing score.
3) Body
In the body you should provide reasons and examples to support your thesis. First, state your reason. After that explain your reason in a few sentences. You should then provide an example that strengthens your reason. This can be an example from your personal experience or another example. I would recommend providing two reasons and two corresponding examples. If you have more time, you can also provide a third reason and example, but this is not necessary to get a high TOEFL Writing score. Also, use TOEFL score boosters in your body. I talk about them in the video.
4) Conclusion
In the conclusion you should restate your thesis and reasons. Remember to rephrase everything. Make your conclusion strong. The conclusion is your final opportunity to convince the reader of your opinion and to convince ETS that you deserve a high TOEFL Writing score.
5) Score Boosters
If you want a high TOEFL Writing score you must absolutely include the following elements in your TOEFL essay in the independent task. If you use these elements you show ETS that you deserve a high score in TOEFL Writing. You should practice using these elements in your TOEFL essays during your TOEFL preparation. It is important that you are used to use them and that you use them with confidence. This will prevent you from making mistakes and enable you to get a 24+ TOEFL score.
Structure
Make sure that your essay is well-structured. In the independent task in TOEFL Writing your essay should consist of an introduction, a body, and a conclusion. You should divide your TOEFL essay in paragraphs. This makes it easier for ETS to understand your ideas and it makes your writing clearer. Therefore, a good structure gets you a high TOEFL Writing score.
Transitions
In TOEFL Writing using transitions can improve your score considerably. I used a lot of transitions in my TOEFL essays. Transitions improve your TOEFL Writing score for three reasons. First, they show that you have a broad range of vocabulary. Second, they help you writing a well-structured TOEFL essay. Third, they help you increase your word count. In short, transitions are an amazing tool to get a high TOEFL Writing score. Study them before your TOEFL test so that you remember them when taking the TOEFL.
If-clauses
To get a high score in the independent task in TOEFL Writing you should use at least one if-clause per body paragraph. If you use if-clauses, this shows that you are able to use more complex sentence structures. Therefore, this will get you a higher TOEFL Writing score. If- clauses are not so easy, so definitely practice them before your TOEFL test so that you can use them with confidence.

Hey Juva I hope that you’re doing well I’d like to ask you I have watched a Video for you , you have said you should write 300 words in the integrated essay and 400 words in the independent essay or your score will go down. However, my friend had taken the exam a few days ago . He has written 120 words in the integrated essay, 300 words in the independent essay; as a result , he has gotten 24 What’s your opinion about that ? I get nervous When I practice the time is gone , I just write 180 -200 words.

Juva to say you're the best at tutoring TOEFL test is still but an understatement. You're such a gem. I registered 2 weeks ago for TOEFL and I knew nothing about the test. But with your lessons I've done okay for myself. I had my test today. I had R27 L23. I expected more but I got what I got. I used your templates for my writing and speaking. While I believed I did well for my writing, my nerves acted out and I can't say the same about speaking. I was talking like a robot and even forgot the points for the general/specific session. I made sure I didn't stop talking even though I knew I was saying gibberish. I hope I get up to 23 in my speaking cos that is a required score for me in my applications

Thank you so much! Is preference question different from advantages/disadvantages type? For example, what would be the structure if I'm given a question like this? - "Some people prefer the quiet life of the country. Others prefer the hustle and bustle of city life. Compare the advantages and disadvantages of both sides. Where would you prefer to live? Give reason for your preferences." Here it has explicitly mentioned to compare advantages and disadvantages.
@juva
@juva 2 жыл бұрын
You're so welcome! The question asks you to state the advantages and the disadvantages and, additionally, you have to state where you would prefer to live. If you get a question that asks you only about your preference, you should not state advantages and disadvantages. In this sense the two questions differ.

Learning in a space with different people can provide us better results when it comes to acquire new knowledge and put it into practice. That is why I prefer interactive classes to only listen to the teache speak. I feel this way for some reasons, which will be explained in the following essay. To begin with, talking and discussing with people about many topics can provide us multiple points of view that can be useful to change some ideas or refute what is wrong, because when we do not share our ideas and everything we know, it is hard to check if they are correct. As a personal example, whenever I learn something new I discuss about it with some friends to see if this is right or makes sense, because I can even learn more when I talk about it with somebody. Furthermore, interactive classes can not only be useful when it comes to acquire new information, but also can help us develop some social skills, such as collaboration and how to speak/interact with others. I know many people who try to overcome some personal limitations, such as shyness and an introvert sense, by joining group classes more frequently, which have guaranteed them amazing results. In conclusion, I strongly believe interactive classes are better than just listening to the teacher speaking, because we can share ideas, knowledge, and improve communication points.

Hi Juva! So I've seen reviews made by ETS that said templates are too traditional, and based on their reviews of a 5 point essay, from what I comprehend, they prefer the free way to write an essay, in other words, not the structured, templated, point by point way if you know what I mean. Should I stay in my lane to use templates or follow their "preferences"? Thank you!
@juva
@juva 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Chalisha, you should structure your essay and use linking words and paragraphs and so on. Of course, you don't need to use a template. However, regarding your TOEFL Writing score, I wouldn't worry - I created templates for my TOEFL and used them and I scored 30/30 in TOEFL Writing, so there is no harm in using templates. Hope this helps :).

Hi Rachel, I can highly recommend thinking about your personal experience. The prompt in TOEFL Writing task 2 is always about a topic of everyday life. Think about what you have experienced, read or heard about that topic. I'm sure you will be able to come up with a lot of ideas. Then you just need to make sure that you present them nicely. Hi Su, whenever you write something in English try to express it in your own words. If you don't know the vocabulary look it up and use it. Eventually, you will get used to thinking of synonyms and it will get easier.

Please gimme feedback Juva I can not agree more there’s a lot student that prefer to only listen when class began, or let’s say passive studying. However, I feel better to do active studying which is interactive class is the best way to learn better to scale up my capability. There’s two reason for me to state that interactive classes is the best way to study. First of all, I feel interactive classes give me better understanding of the topic. Based on my experience when I was in an english class, the teacher give us an english game to play, our class feel weird in the first time because we actually didn’t even play a game of this. The game is easy and we just need to do the work by asking question, it’s particulary give us an extra-practice of how to speak and sensing the grammar better. Second reason, I want to say this method will improve your communication skill. When I was in a discussion with my group work, I was taking the role as a leader and also a listener to other for fostering the project into success. In addition, when presentation section began we need to show up our public speaking skill to everyone which also build up our confidences. Those reason represent of how important interactive classes for reinforcing student’s communication skill. In conclusion, interactive class where I could act as a whole possibilities to fulfill my curiousity in the topic is the best way to learn. With interactive class, you aren’t just learn better but also enhancing your communication skill.

Hello Juva! I took the TOEFL test a couple of weeks ago and I scored 96 without any preparation. However, I need 100+ to get into my dream grad school in the US! I appreciate your content here on KZfaq. I saw it while looking for extra tips and I just can't stop watching and taking notes! Anyways, I have a question about the independent writing section. I got 24 in my previous exam. I was given a prompt similar to this: " Government has a spare area and they want to give it a) for high school kids as a sports place b) as a quiet walking place, park.. c) a garden. I choose 2 options: a and c. I said I partially would allocate the area for biology lessons and make a small garden. I gave a lot of reasons (though I think they were not very well organized) I typed around 330 words. My question is could it be possible that they did not give more points because I chose two options? I gave very good reasons on how to utilize the area. I know it is a very personal question. However, I thought you might have seen it before somewhere. Thank you for the videos again they will help me A LOT! Btw I am taking TOEFL next Tuesday at home wish me luck!
