Today’s Freaky Friday episode is about the unsolved case of '90s K-pop idol Kim Sung-jae, who was found dead in his hotel room on the same night as his debut solo performance. He was found with 28 injection wounds in his arm and traces of animal sleeping pills in his blood.
At first, his secret girlfriend, Kim Yoo-seon was charged with his MURDER, but after two years she was found not GUILTY and disappeared from the public-eye…
Their relationship was a secret until his tragic death put everything into the spotlight. They had kept things under wraps, which isn’t surprising considering the strict rules against idols dating and the kind of backlash from fans it can bring. Just look at what happened to Karina from aespa. She ended up having to make a public apology when her relationship got revealed.
Kim Sung-jae was the other-half of Deux, alongside Lee Hyun Do. Deux was a popular hip-hop duo from the 90s that helped shape the K-pop world we know today.
Nearly 30 years later, Kim Sung-Jae's tragic death remains unsolved. The SBS documentary series "Unanswered Questions," which delved into the suspicious circumstances surrounding his death, was banned from airing not once, but twice. His girlfriend successfully obtained a court order in South Korea to stop it.
Decades on, Kim Sung-wook, Kim Sung-jae’s brother, is still seeking justice and keeping his brother's legacy alive. Kim Sung-jae meant so much to K-pop fans and to the legacy of K-pop itself. Even major groups like BTS have covered his songs, such as “As I Told You,” paying tribute to him.
Fans haven't given up either, Kim Sung-jae’s sudden and unsolved death remains at the heart of the K-pop fandom. Decades later, his fans are still trying to uncover the truth behind what really happened to their beloved K-pop idol.

HONESTLY! Her fans will do the MOST to ignore the truth and try to insult people who are intelligent enough to research into it. She paid her brother’s bond of $100,000 , she took him bowling when he was out on bail, she said, “I’ll do anything to see my brother smile” , she posted photos with him, she wrote a letter to try to get him a lower sentence. She then married someone who commit violent crimes again another child when he was 15, it’s DISGUSTING. I’ve seen people in these comments trying to falsely claim that she was only mentioned because of her race- like no- race does not play into if you actively choose to defend rapists and predators.

I think because Kpop has more international fans now. I’ve become Kpopper in 2005 and at that time people were insanely obsessed with their idols love life and don’t want them to date and sometimes they were in their 30s which I always thought was horrible and weird. They deserve to find love and settle at any age, they’re not our boyfriends/girlfriends and we should support them as artists.

Bro, the girlfriend killed him. She came from a rich family( they more than likely payed off the police and were the ones to get rid of the tapes especially since it took so long for them to consider it a murder giving the family enough time to clean up her mess), the agency was getting in the way of their relationship(completely ignoring the fact she was horrible to him so she was not ok mentally), and was depressed of her constant failing in school. Then with the final blow of failing her exams?! You know her family was more than likely bullying her and looking down on her. That it sent her down a dark hole. She knew she was gonna lose Sung-Jae to his career and her career was falling apart. She took his life and was gonna kill her dog and herself so they could all be together. Why she didn't kill herself? only she knows but I think she just got scared and ran to her family for help.

They also likely payed off the second judge too , considering they're rich well I wouldn't be surprised if he was bribed into giving her a not guilty verdict. Considering it's the 90s we're talking about that kind of shady business and bribery is much easier than it would be today. But 100% agree that she's guilty, I don't see who else in that room would have had a motive to do it. His manager would get paid more with Sungjae alive same for his back up dancers 🤷🏻‍♀️ there's only one person left in the room.

@@xaiisyourboss01 Exactly! I'd forgotten about the second judge but that right there is the biggest evidence. The first was going to give her the verdict she deserved but then replaced?! Not a coincidence at all. He was a beautiful soul that is missed by his family. RIP Sung-Jae ❤️

She just had to change meds. But they brought that up YEARS later, when her group just disbanded, accusing her of trying to smuggle drugs seven years prior????? And it was just her prescribed meds????? Ironically, if you committed murder and claim to be drunk while doing so it reduces the sentence. And people take it much better than doing (non hardcore) drugs.

I first heard about this case in 2012 when Taemin and Key from SHINee played Deux (btw I was under the impression that the way they pronounced it sounded more like ‘juice’ but I may be misremembering) in a dramatisation of the duo’s story for a documentary kind of thing. Taemin played SungJae and there was this scene where HyunDo is dreaming about SungJae after his death and he says “나 먼저 갈게“ which basically means something like “I’ll go on ahead” and then disappears which had me tearing up in my dorm room. The whole thing up to the tragedy was actually quite fun and lighthearted with HyunDo and other people reminiscing about how they met and trained and went to Moon Night, and they kept embellishing it with these not-so-subtle nods to SHINee songs (like when SungJae talked about how he had considered going into dentistry before, HyunDo (Key) is like “hey, ‘Shiny’ would be a great name for a dental practice!” 😂 Really love getting more of a deep dive into SungJae’s murder, the second they described those injection marks in the documentary, before they even got to the end of the sentence I was like “yeah, this was definitely murder!”

Couple things….how do you purchase “under a lethal dose” of a medicine that’s lethal to a human? If she used it on a human, ALL DOSES are lethal. As for the American dancers, if they were there on a working Visa, you have to leave the country when your Visa is up. If the cops didn’t ask to detain them, they have to leave or get detained for real. As for the murderer, I just see bribery all over this. Her family threw money everywhere they could, then she probably changed her name legally,
@anna00913
@anna00913 Ай бұрын
i agree that she's super suspicious, especially buying that medication, and i do think she's most likely guilty, but there can definitely be nonlethal doses of lethal medications. like heroin is lethal at a certain dose, but nonlethal at a low enough dose. almost everything can be lethal at a high enough dose, even water, but especially with prescription medications the doses have a very fine line between safe and unsafe doses, and that line is at different places for different people, but there's always a general line that's drawn where it becomes unsafe for most people. that specific medication is dangerous for humans even at low doses, but there's still low enough doses that humans would be unlikely to die from it

i constantly think about this case. i still can't wrap my head around how the video of him on SBS performing "As I Told You" was one of the last videos/appearances of him before he was found dead. i've been a kpop fan since 2011 and its heartwarming to see his song continue to be covered by recent kpop groups. kpop fans have a ton of issues with being parasocial and being too nosy and "involved" in their favs' personal lives. its incredibly disgusting and its only gotten worse over the years!! the fan culture now is so incredibly toxic and way too overwhelming with people who don't know how to be a decent human being and don't know how to respect anyone. to the case: the girlfriend got off way too easily. its infuriating that she got no punishment for what she did and imo, she's obviously guilty. she filed a ton of injunctions to prevent an episode airing about his death. if she was innocent, then she wouldn't be putting all that energy into preventing an episode from releasing.

I think it's an interesting conversation to be had how some K-pop fans glorify South Korea and ignore/romanticise its many, MANY, social and societal issues, to the point of becoming some of the strongest, loudest upholders of them. The parasocial relationship that is fully encouraged by many record labels is a discussion that *must* be had - but so is the sub-topic of fans sexualising and infantilising idols at their leisure, as well. The sexual harassment of idols is so normalised within the industry; zoom-ins on male idols' "bulges" is incredibly common, and these are the same fans that will make edits with cutesy songs and baby noises the very next day... Let's not ignore how K-pop boy bands make up some of the biggest tags on sites like Ao3, featuring some of the most explicit k!nks and fantasies out there. At the same time, fans, mostly international ones that have nothing to do with Korean traditions and norms, will be some of the loudest critics when female idols are "too sexual". The K-pop industry is not at all the bright bubbly, or the passionate suggestive, space that it likes to portray itself as, but a cesspool of abuse and imbalanced power dynamics. The majority of idols and fans get pulled into the cross fire.

I'm at the part where you mention the Beatles song, "Lucy In The Sky" (with diamonds). You mention that it's famously about the drug LSD. Well, most people think that to be true, I used to as well. It's actually about a picture John Lennon's son Julian drew about a girl in his school class. When asked who was in the picture, Julian said it was Lucy, with eyes like diamonds. So that's where the song actually originated from. I like trivia, lol, especially music trivia. Love your videos!

Story time: There was a “Korean culture club” in my high school. It was more of a K-Pop fan club and I think only one member of the club was actually Korean at all. One girl I was in class with who was Korean told me that she used to go to it for maybe a few days expecting more of Korean culture than just K-Pop, but one day they asked her if they thought a specific band member was cute (I don’t remember who) like “ugh look at him isn’t he so cute?” and she said “sure, yeah he’s good looking.” The same girl who asked got pissed and started saying things like “that’s my husband you can’t have him!!” even though she asked her in the first place!!?? After that the girl and other members of the club kept berating her the rest of the meeting. The environment got very toxic very quickly and she never went back. She was disappointed, to say the least.

john lennon, who wrote lucy in the sky with diamonds, was actually very insistent that the song wasn't related to LSD. it was based on a drawing his son made, and the song's imagery was inspired by alice in wonderland (which has its own imagery associated with drugs, sure). lennon openly shared when beatles records (like rubber soul and revolver) were influenced by their drug usage, so it's unlikey he'd be so insistent that lucy in the sky wasn't about LSD if it was actually about LSD
