The comics version of the dark Phoenix is an all time classic and it is so for a reason! Which is why the cartoons and the films keep trying to do the story but have failed miserably. On another note the Last Stand is my fave of this trilogy. All my friends find it hard to believe this 🤣🤣

You've seen the "tin man" in the previous movie. He helped the kids escape the school when Stryker and his men raided it. After The Last Stand, the contracts for several of the lead actors were expiring, and the only talks they seemed to be having regarding continuing the series was with spinoff origins movies like X-Men Origins: Wolverine and a purported Young Magneto movie. So they killed off Charles, not knowing if they'd be able to get Patrick Stewart to return if an X-Men 4 ever materialized, but the end-credits scene was intended to leave the door open for Charles' return, even if it ends up being a different actor playing him.

Just before the credits, I don't think it was that Eric was partly resistant to the "cure" but rather that it's not as permanent as they initially thought. The end credits scene as far as I know is only explained in the comics. That was the Doctor and man born without brain functions from the class that Charles dismissed early. Since it's not explained in the movies, I don't think it's a spoiler to say that from what I've heard others say, that man was apparently Charles's twin brother, and in his last moments, Charles moved his own mind into the body of his twin. Also not explained in any of the movies is that the Phoenix is an extra-dimensional multiverse entity that is similar to the Scarlet Witch. Which is more powerful, I have no idea lol.

The scene with Eric at the end was meant to imply the "cure" wasn't as final as the developers had thought or intended, and that it was possible it could wear off eventually on any mutant that had taken the cure (or had it forced upon them).

Also mentioned this on Popcorn in Bed's channel, this film combines two distinct X-Men comic storylines. The entire Jean Grey narrative is drawn from the Dark Phoenix saga, a series of comics by Chris Claremont. The storyline is told throughout Uncanny X-Men #129-138 (January - October 1980), but the Phoenix Force itself dates back to X-Men #101 (July 1976), setting up this story over four years. The other inspiration behind this film is the Gifted storyline from Astonishing X-Men (Vol. 3) #1 to Astonishing X-Men (Vol. 3) #6 (May - November 2004) by Joss Whedon of all people. This covered a storyline involving a cure for "Mutations" similar to this film. If you ever want to get into X-Men comics, start with Giant-Sized X-Men #1 (1975), a comic that sets up the status quo of the X-Men for the years to follow. This is followed by the Chris Claremont run (Uncanny X-Men #94 - #279), home to iconic storylines like Days of Future Past and Dark Phoenix Saga. But you don't have to read all of it. There's also a comic called "X-Men Grand Design" (2017) by Ed Piskor that covers this period of the X-Men and is a great way to get caught up on 1970s to 1980s X-Men storylines. In the 2000s, the X-Men comics are home to some of the most unique and exciting storylines. Grant Morrison's New X-Men run is fantastic and is credited with beginning the 21st century of X-Men stories. It's also a great entry point into X-Men comics. Everything within New X-Men will be important moving forward into the 21st-century X-Men stories. We then have Joss Whedon's Astonishing X-Men, which follows Grant Morrison's New X-Men. Even though I don't like Whedon as a person, these stories are really good. It's also a good starting point, but having insight into New X-Men is helpful. After these, we have stories like House of M (2005), a comic that GREATLY changed up the Mutant status quo in the Marvel universe. Finally, we have the Krakoa Era of X-Men, a fantastic series of comics that is like nothing we've seen before with the X-Men, starting with House of X and Powers of X. These comics reward X-Men fans throughout the ages, going back to pretty much every past X-Men story since the 1960s. This also makes it extremely difficult for new fans to get into so it's great to have a large insight into Important X-Men stories. There's also the comics titled X-Men during this era that follow off from House of X / Power of X so those are a good read as well. If you just want to jump into an X-Men story that is very stand alone and needs no past insight then I recommend God Loves, Man Kills by Chris Claremont. A storyline everyone recommends that also inspired the second X-Men film. There's also countless other series I never mentioned like The New Mutants, X-Factor, solo comics etc. These are all really good, New Mutants is a blast and I'd argue that 1990s side Mutant content was better than the X-Men comics. So do recommend checking those out. Also X-Men 97 is amazing so you could easily jump into that and have a blast. I just don't recommend trying to compare it too much with the films as the movies are not the most faithful to certain stories and characters but regardless X-Men 97 is every part of what makes the X-Men amazing put into a ground-breaking show.

It's not like Phoenix is similar to Scarlet Witch... but in the MCU they made Wanda very similar to the Phoenix. I would say she was their Phoenix but with the name of Wanda Maximoff. In the comics they are very different, but both are very powerful, and you don't want either of them as your enemy.

You deserve it! I love your reactions! I also love X-Men! Fun tid bit the man at the beginning with the lawnmower that floats away is Chris Claremont, the most important writer for X-Men comics. He wrote the series for 16-17 years in a row from 1975-1991. He took them from a failing comic to the most successful marvel comic. There is an excellent documentary on KZfaq about him. I think it's called Claremont's X-MEN.

I so hope you react to Xmen97, to date the only Disney/Marvel/Xmen production, can’t be an accident!!!? You don’t need to watch the original series, or maybe as a patreon. Some good stories there, but Xmen97 was a real step up. The animation was much closer to comics accurate & the Dark Phoenix story in the comics was truly epic, like Thanos/infinity/MCU was. So in comparison this always feels weaker in comparison although I appreciate much more now. Great reaction again, thank you

At the time this came out, I loved it, I loved the DID version of the phoenix, but I can also admit that when it came out it may have been the weakest of the bunch. Twenty years on, I think it's held up really well, and although it's no shining gem, it's one of the better ones. The X-men franchise is really hit or miss, but this seems to be more middle of the road in my eyes.

It felt a bit lacking and even rushed, as you put it but you specified as to what you felt lacked more of what was needed which is true but i believe they wanted to wrap things up because at the time Marvel was struggling to not be bankrupt and i think this series helped them to get back on their feet. For that i'll thank them for letting Thanos exist so we'd have a epic story to enjoy. Back to this movie however, it's a mixed bag of feelings because i both enjoy it but feel the mistakes they made. They could have done better but i think might have been bad direction because the mutants they choose like porcupine man just feels so out of place. We get it, not everyone is Jean Grey all powerful and useful mutations, but showcase someone else. Maybe it was an early attempt at humor, who knows why, but in any case, I'm looking forward to your reaction on the prequels🧬💉

A big reason why this movie didn't have the same feel as the first two is that the former director Bryan Singer left the franchise for the chance to do Superman Returns. While he did an admirable job with it, and Brandon Routh is an awesome stand-in for Christoper Reeve (the movie is supposed to be only five years after the previous movies), it felt more of a reboot/tribute than a continuation, and then got dumped in favor of the Zach Snyder Justice League project. Bryan Singer will return to the X-Men later, and you can tell when it happens. 🙂

Erik is a good general in therms of war and knowing the costs of freedom due to his experience traumas. So its easy to misjudge him as a villain than a more complex character in the eyes of Fox's movies and directors at that time. He is more interesting and deeper than that. If you really wanna see a GREAT portrayal of his character if not reading the comics, than the X-Men animated series is the real treat for you and its revival of X-Men 97 even more. The movies will look just stupid compared to those haha

Hey Kaielle. X-Men: The Last Stand is a movie I saw in theaters. Yes. It is of my least favorite in the X-Men series. However, I’ve found most things, especially movies, are not nearly as good or bad as the general consensus says it is. Colossus or “Tin Man” wasn’t new. You saw him in the last movie protecting the other kids when Stryker broke into and attacked the mansion.

Yeah this one doesn’t get the same love as the last two movies but it does set up a lot of the X-men films that would come years after. The themes really reflect a lot with events today if its a choice fine but what happens when it becomes mandatory/forced where is the line? And both Magneto and even Charles have done questionable things because of it. Magneto for all his righteous talk has no issue sacrificing other mutants for it as showed when as Logan put it ‘He watched Charles die’. Magneto could never make the personal sacrifice. Charles himself was no better he exerted too much control by tampering with Jean’s mind out of fear for her raw power and if Logan is disgusted by it you know Charles went too far. Brief as it is I also like Logan’s talk with Rogue. He has a bond with her but he doesn’t exploit it to enforce his beliefs on to her. He shows her the options and offers her the choice that she wants and trusts she makes the best choice she can. In the end it was Logan of all people who embodied everything Magneto and Charles failed. For the greater good of mutants and humans Logan made the personal sacrifice to do what was right by killing the woman he loved he did what was needed no matter how ugly it was. Remember the ending and the post credit scene it will come into play in a few movies.

During your end comments you touched on story lines that would be difficult to continue/explain... no spoilers, promise.. this unfortunately is the start of some overall plot line drift. The plot lines get a bit mixed up at times because of different directors, and the usual "new direction" problem. But have no fear, keep watching, the end of the X-Men movies does resolve most problems.. and Deadpool helps too... You'll really enjoy the Deadpool part if you watch the rest of the movies.

Everything about the production of this movie was kind of a mess, which is why you can find a ton of articles and videos on the subject. A good chunk of the production team left the franchise to do Superman Returns (including James Marsden, hence his small role), and there is an infamous story about Halle Berry (allegedly) being tricked into signing on to this movie by being given a fake script that showed Storm having a much bigger role. Both Bryan Singer and Matthew Vaughn backed out of directing, and Brett Ratner was brought in with a short timetable to film the movie. He admittedly didn't know much about the X-Men mythos and said he was trusting the writers. There were multiple writers involved, but the idea was always to recreate the Dark Phoenix saga from the comics (with talk of Sigourney Weaver playing Emma Frost at one point). The "cure" storyline was added to give the movie some political intrigue, but the studio wanted to focus more on that plotline, which is how we arrived at this final product. In the end, Ratner was tasked with getting the movie done "on time", which he did, and that's why this movie feels like it got the job done but isn't as good as it could have been.

The "Tin Man" is Piotr Rasputin, aka Colossus, who can turn his skin into organic steel, and is the most goody two-shoes of all the X-Men (kind of like a D&D Paladin, VERY Lawful Good). Him throwing Wolverine like that is known in the comics as the Fastball Special :D The things they were fighting in the Danger Room are known as Sentinels, mutant-hunting robots that became a very great threat in the comics. Warren Worthington III was one of the founding members of the X-Men in the comics, known as Angel (for obvious reasons). The Phoenix Force is one of, if not THE originating primal force in the whole Universe, quite literally creation and destruction, raw emotion personified. It's entanglement with Jean Grey gets convoluted in the comics, but also very epic :P The Juggernaut is Cain Marko, Charles Xavier's stepbrother who hates Charles for being smarter and for being loved by his parents. He found an ancient magical gem in Korea called the Gem of Cyttorak, which gave him his powers, making him a super-strong unstoppable force (he can throw shit into SPACE). His helmet protects him from psionic powers, his one weakness, which makes him even more of a nemesis for his step-bro. Fox also did Rogue really dirty in these films, and in my opinion Anna Paquin is not that great an actress either :/ Rogue is known among fans for being sassy, not mopey, and she's a lot more powerful than in these films, as she actually killed Captain Marvel and permanently absorbed her abilities, so she can fly and has super strength and whatnot. Film Rogue is just... boring. They also REALLY underplayed how powerful Multiple Man is. He can create a dupe at will by snapping his fingers or tapping his foot, which has all of his knowledge and skills. The dupes can create their own dupes, but like with a copy of a copy, they get less useful. He can reabsorb his dupes at-will and gain their memories and knowledge of their time apart from him. He can also instakill someone by putting his hand in their mouth and creating a dupe INSIDE them, which has the obvious consequence of exploding them from the inside out. Magneto is an anti-villain; his ideals of mutant freedom and independence from the prejudices of regular humans is noble, but his methods are questionable at best, and he'll occasionally veer into a little fascistic territory, viewing everything in conflicting terms. Ultimately he's proven right in the comics with the humans creating Sentinels and essentially declaring war on mutants, but he did do a lot to fuel the fear that led to that scenario, which is why he's the villain and not an anti-hero. The comatose man in Xavier's lecture and at the end of the film is his brain-dead twin brother, who was rendered thus by Charles' nascent telepathic power overwhelming his fetal brain. At the moment of Charles' death, he transferred his consciousness into that of his brother, which is why Moira is so surprised to hear him speak.

Rather a pity they messed up the Phoenix/Dark Phoenix Saga by rushing it so much. It's a story better told in a serial format like a TV show, over several seasons, rather than trying to shoehorn it into a couple movies. And a big part of what made it so great was that it was such a surprise. Jean was the best of them, the most emotionally stable. To see her embody "Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely" was such a shock, you didn't want to believe it. Eventually Jean would kill herself, rather than risk killing more people than she already had by that point. If you're really interested, you really have to start with Giant-Size X-Men 1, and from there up to X-Men 137. Technically, the Phoenix Saga only encompasses 101-108, while the Dark Phoenix Saga goes from 129-137, but the earlier comics establish more of Jean's character and how she became the Phoenix, while the interlude between them shows her using the power more abruptly, less carefully, even before the external corruption by Mastermind begins.

dear Kl: Magneto plays chess and is capable of thinking several moves ahead. Its what makes him a formidable villian. Both Magneto and Mystique were smart enough to foresee the possibility of either or both of them getting hit by the cure. (All soldiers are aware of the 'inevitable'). Therefore they planned ahead what would happen if such were to happen. So Erik's abandonment of Raven was just them employing option #2 and setting-up the raid on Alcatraz. Magneto did not abandon Mystique; Mystique play acted the role of the jilted lover to mislead all the president's men.

Magneto's characterization in this movie has always bothered me. In the previous 2 movies, less so, even though he was still portrayed as a straight up villain. Here though, abandoning Mystique and plotting to kill a kid, a *mutant* kid btw who had no say in how his powers were being used, yeah, they defiantly lost sight of the character in this movie. While Magneto is obviously the X Men's main adversary, he's portrayed much better in comics and animated shows, fighting for mutants and going to extreme measures to do so, which brings him into conflict with the X Men, but he's not actively trying to destroy humans or insight war all the time. Magneto has fought alongside the X Men a great many times as well, there was even a run of comics where he was the leader of the X Men, if that tells you anything about the kind of character he is. In terms of a straight up evil villain for the X Men, that has always been Mr. Sinister, and it's shocking we never even got close to having him in the movies.

I don''t like they way they played this out in the movies. The equivalent story line in the comics took place over a longer period of time. In the movie they tried to pair Jean and Logan and in the comics it was Jean and Scott. At the end of the arc in the comics Jean briefly regains control but then she and the X-Men are attacked by aliens in retaliation for a horrific act Jean committed under the influence of the Phoenix(it is what amplified her powers to god-like levels). While fighting to save Scott she feels the influence of the Phoenix returning and so kills herself in front of Scott to save the world from her Dark Phoenix self. To me it's like they changed Romeo and Juliet to Bob and Juliet. They replaced a classic couple with something they could better monetize. I am truly shocked that Hollywood would go for the money grab. /s

I'd rank the Trilogy #2, #1, #3. I think much of the dislike for #3 comes from the comics fans. In the comics, The Phoenix Saga was longer and more complicated where Jean destroyed whole planets, etc. and this movie seemed trivial compared to that. I was OK with it but just didn't find it as interesting or well made as the first two. Lots of CGI overkill. I won't be watching your reaction to the Wolverine Origins movie which is famously poor. Much like the Covid vaccine, the "Cure" wasn't as permanent as the makers thought.

Hi, Kaiielle! It seems like I haven't seen any of your reactions in a while. Apologies. I don't know what I've been doing. But, I'm sure it's been something. I'm glad to hear that my 'Premium' KZfaq membership helps you out. It's one of the the very, very few subscriptions that I maintain. I just can't afford to support everyone individually. And, for that I apologize. But... I'm glad to hear that my absolute detestation of commercials is a boon for you, and for the other folks that I follow. Is my monthly divvied up evenly amongst every channel I've subscribed to? If so, I'll unsubscribe from some of the others that I seldom if ever watch, in order to increase your piece of the pie. And... how does that even work? Do you get a stipend for each of the videos of yours that I watch? Hmmm... I'm curious. I never really thought about it. At any rate... as for this movie. It's okay. A decent end to the original trilogy. It didn't bother me. But, it also wasn't as good as the first two. Probably because it was more action and less story. But, I was okay with the story as it was. Now, no spoilers... but, checking to see if the 'next' movie (whatever it is) is a sequel, a prequel or what... that's kind like a spoiler. I think you should watch them all in release order, the same way we had to when they came out originally. For better or for worse... the order is what it is. And, you watch for a bit... and then you'll start to figure out where you are in the X-Men timeline. And, that's okay. It's part of the fun. And, honestly, the whole point of our watching reaction channels is so that we can kind of relive the wonder of the first time vicariously with your experiencing it for the first time. For my part, I've enjoyed all of the X-Men movies. All of them. And, I'm not really a huge X-Men fan, but... they do a pretty good job bringing it to the big screen. And, I've enjoyed the ride. I hope you will, too. Because... I'm riding with you! I hope you have a wonderful rest of the summer! Thank you, as always, for the watch, and I'll look forward to whatever comes next!

(It's a long story.) But... thank you for the clarification. (Now... when you say 'time' do you mean actual run time, (So, 30 minutes of content = 30 minutes, or if I watch it at 1.5x (which is my default for most content (reference above)) does it only count as 20 minutes? (I'm genuinely curious. I have no idea how that stuff works, but I would like to consume your content in the way most beneficial to you.) Well, thank you for the information. I'll still look forward to whatever is next. (I just recently discovered Fallout. I've been avoiding everyone's reactions to it, because I hadn't seen it yet. I've seen it now, and I have binge-watched all your content on the subject, and I'll get around to everyone else's when I get around to it. Your joy in the watch is enjoyable. I admit... I'm not a gamer at all. And, I did enjoy your "The Last of Us" videos, but I never watched any of the game playthroughs that you recommended. Who knows? Maybe when I retire. Although, my son has been trying to get me to play video games ever since he bought his GameCube. I just don't have any hand-eye coordination. And, puzzles... my mind doesn't work that way. Years and years ago, (I guess round 1996 or so) my friend gave me Myst, while I was out of work for a few years. And... it vexed me. I'm not a puzzle guy. At any rate... thank you for the info.
