Just in batting, Sobers played in an era of uncovered pitches, 6 bouncers per over, any number of fielders behind square on the leg-side, *no helmets*, and *opened* the innings. And yet averages more than Kallis, Lara, Tendulkar, Ponting etc. There's no comparison, really.
@darrenjpeters
@darrenjpeters Ай бұрын
Just a note, the laws of cricket were changed in 1957 to prevent more than 2 fielders behind square leg. Sobers made his Test debut in 1954, so there were only 3 years of his career where any number of fielders behind square was possible.

Kallis v sobers is no contest. All other all rounders (botham, Dev, Kahn, stokes,etc) batted at 5 through 8. Sobers one third of his tests at 4 and the rest at 5,6 or even 7. Lots of not outs on those slots. Kallis batted at three and four. That’s it. A batters batter. Where Sachin, Lara and Ponting bat. Take away Sobers one knock of 350 odd not not and he dips to 54. Also half of Kallis’s innings were in SA. Which is renowned as the hardest place to bat. Everyone who bats in SA averages 10 lower than anywhere else. Yet he averages 55. In a premium batting slot. From 1999 to 2013. His average was 62. That’s Steven smith averages for 14 years. His batting is another league. Bowled 20 overs per test vs sobers 43. And by default therefore could’ve reached 500 wickets had they tossed him the ball more. Just because the likes of Steyn, Donald, Pollock. philander, Morkel bowled ahead of him made it hard to get a slot. So was always a first or second change bowler. Bowled 145 to 150 k on a well rested day. When not recovering from his batting There’s just no other way to put it. Greatest cricketer the world has ever seen. Indeed all rounder. Ofcourse there were better batters and bowlers. And yes bradmans feats with the bat outweigh even Kallis. But cricketer implies bowling, batting and fielding. So he is no doubt the greatest “cricketer” ever. 25000 runs 500 plus wickets if you add ODI’s Trust me anyone reading this .... your grandchildren won’t ever see that record broken. Just like we won’t see Bradmans record broken. King Kallis is an apt name

It seems to be Sobers. He held the world record 365 I think until Lara broke it. And his flexibility as a bowler. He could bowl spin, fast swing, left arm right arm etc. I am a South African, but I have to go with Sobers. He hit 6 sixes in an over as well.

You can't determine an allrounder's greatness by the batting and bowling difference .......it favours the batting allrounder's too much. What i mean is batting average's are always higher,it's not fair to bowling allrounder's. More accurately the batting average aim in test cricket is to average between 40 to 60,while for bowler's the aim is to average between 20 to 30 at the 'elite level' . That's a 2 to 1 ratio, or 20 to 10 run difference, so if you convert the bowling average to a 'batting average' as such and then added it to the batting average that makes 100% sense. For example a 60 batting average equates to a 20.00 bowling average, a 59 batting average equates to a 20.50 bowling average, a 58 batting average equates to a 21.00 bowling average......ect,ect ......while a 50 batting average equates to a 25.00 bowling average........ect,ect.....while a 45 batting average equates to a 27.50 bowling average......ect,ect.....then a 40 batting average equates to equates to a 30 batting average. Thereafter it's 1 run for 1 run as in a 39 batting average equates to equates to a 31 bowling average and a 38 batting average equates to equates to a 32 bowling average........you can go to a 'maximum' of a 30 batting average equates to equates to a 40 bowling average. Using MY system......Gary Sobers is on top with a combined average of 93.74, second is Jacques Kallis with 92.71, third is Imran Khan with 92.06 and Keith Miller with 91.02 in fourth place......ect. It's worth noting when you see the high batting averages for Sobers and Kallis at around 58 and 55 respectively compared with the batting averages of Imran Khan and Miller of about 38 and 37 it's somewhat in reverse with the bowling averages once they are converted. Sobers has a 'converted' bowling average of 36 ,Kallis is around 37.......while for Imran Khan and Miller there 'converted' bowling averages are at around 54. THIS IS THE BEST "QUALITY" SYSTEM

@adam872
@adam872 4 жыл бұрын
My usual method of comparing all rounders is to take their batting average, add it to the number of wickets per test x 10 and number of catches divided by 10. This means Sobers has a score of 92, Kallis is 84, Imran is 80, Botham 81, Miller 73, Hadlee 80 and Kapil Dev 70. This is an attempt to normalise batting and bowling and put them on a more even footing. The simple taking one average away from the other benefits batsmen too much in my view. It still yields IMHO the right result: Sobers as the clear best, because most good judges say he's the best ever.

You compared the sobbers and kallis bowling by taking had sobers played 166 match and didnt take into account how many overs they bowled. Bcos the bowling strike rate of kallis (in 60s) is better than sobers (90s) and there was not much difference in average. Bowler can take wickets only if overs are given to bowl right??? So the comparison made as a whole is not correct in my opinion!!

Garry sobers can only be considered as ba batsman because he had an strike rate of over 85+ in test cricket bowling . It means he takes almost 15 overs to take a single wicket Where as kallis has 65 far better than Gary. In my opinion kallis is the greatest batting all-rounder and Imran is the greatest bowling all rounder.

He was destroyed by akram and McGrath , you don't understand cricket at all , in 1960s , pitches were literal hell of batsmen while they got flat in 2000s , sobers faced fazal mahmood , derek underwood , fred Trueman , ray lindwall , dennis lilie , Bob willis. Kallis was never in any point of his career the best batsmen in the world . Ponting , Lara , sachin and arguably even David were always ahead of him , sobers was the undisputed greatest batsmen of his time , sobers played on far far more bowling friendly conditions while kallis played on batsmen friendly pitches , when sobers retired he was the highest run scorer in the world , 6th highest wicket taker in the world and took highest number of catches so all kallis needed to do to surpass sobers was score more runs than sachin tendulkar , take more wickets than Courtney Walsh and take more catches than anybody who is not a wicket keeper and kallis failed to do any of them . It's a myth cricket was any easier back then , bowlers were faster and more aggressive, there was no batsmen biased rule , far tougher pitches and no protection gear , even a idiot would easily see that era was harder for batsmen

late 90s and early 2000s was the best era for batter. Even the modern era (and of course the era before the 90s) is more difficult to bat than that. Since 2015, batting average in tests have dropped significantly and we are seeing so many 2-3 days games.

This claim about Kallis is just another whiteman's great self booster. He wants to make himself the greatest and master of all things. No on the hand i read a whiteman's story where he made a review and noted the difference between the number of centuries Kallis and The great Brian Lara. Kallis has more, fifty at least. But he also said that of the fifty or so that Kallis has, he can't recall any with glee or excitement when looking back, but can recall at least 25 of Lara's. So the notion that you can make a comparison between the very greatest Sir. Garfield Sobers and Kallis is comparing chalk with cheese. He's a joke compared to Sir. Garry. Sir. Garry was a master and magician on a cricket field. I too can recall plenty of Sir Garfield's innings with glee and excitement and not one of Kallis's
